Obama Statement on Bush Veto of Stem Cell BillChicago, IL | June 20, 2007

CHICAGO, IL - Senator Obama today released the following statement in response to President Bush's veto of Stem Cell Bill "By vetoing funding for stem cell research once again, the President is deferring the hopes of millions of Americans who do not have the time to keep waiting for the cure that may save or extend their lives. The promise that stem cells hold does not come from any particular ideology, it is the judgment of science, and we deserve a President who will put that judgment first and make this promise real for the American people."

We, at Do the Right Thing, Barack would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Senator Obama for his statement regarding President Bush's shameful veto of the latest Stem Cell Research Bill. It seems that once again the current administration is ignoring the feelings and wishes of the majority of American citizens on this important and potentially life saving issue. There are millions of people living with chronic, disabling, and life threatening illnesses who truly could be helped by the amazing scientific and medical advances being made every day, and we sincerely hope that the next administration will take this matter into serious, and thoughtful consideration! Thank you Senator Obama for standing up and "doing the right thing" by listening to the thoughts and ideas of the people, in regard to this continuing debate on stem cell research!

Thank you from your Friends at DtRTB :)

Any comments?  Post them here, we'd love to hear what you think! :)

Bravo Senator Obama, I agree with Hendrik. Even though I am not a religious person, I respect the rights of those who are religious to pracitce their faith, but a small minority should not be able to control the enitre country, and in some ways the world, against science, nature and common sense. It is time for all people of all faiths or of no faiths to say modern medicine will no longer be held hostage to a small groups interpretation of scripture! I was a bit of a Biblical scholar for many years. The Bible does not take a position on abortion or stem cell research.

I hate President Bush.
Upon vetoing this bill he said, "If this legislation became law, it would compel American taxpayers for the first time in our history to support the deliberate destruction of human embryos. I made it clear to Congress and to the American people that I will not allow our nation to cross this moral line.”
"Deliberate" destruction? These embryos will go unused... it's not like anyone is creating embyos for the sole purpose of destroying them! I don't understand the logic these people use. So it's ok to "deliberately destroy" cells that existed before Aug. 9, 2001, but not after?
And who does he think he is to "not allow our nation to cross this moral line?" Are you kidding me? Since when can the federal government regulate my morals? There's overwhelming national support for stem cell research... it's good to know that Sen. Obama is paying attention to what Americans really want rather than trying to legislate what he believes our ethics should be.
Sheesh. Is it 2008 yet?

Tara, I echo your feelings and statements here.

"And who does he think he is to "not allow our nation to cross this moral line?"
~He thinks he's the king of course!

"Since when can the federal government regulate my morals?"
~This administration has been doing that since he took office and remember he has the "moral majority" backing him so I guess all the other God fearing, church going, intelligent logical thinkers, don't count if they're of a different mindset.

"There's overwhelming national support for stem cell research..."
~Yeah but then there's that egotistical entitlement thing going on with "W" that evidently trumps that?

In his own glorious words...
"The question is, who ought to make that decision? The Congress or the commanders? And as you know, my position is clear -- I'm a commander guy."
Yes, "our president," the great Commander/Decider.
I spent my early morning hours crying in front of the television on Nov 3, 2004. I don't think I'll cry that much in 2008 regardless of who gets elected. I may be speaking too soon, though. In other words, (dare I say it...) I may be "misunderestimating" the situation ; )

Good for you Senator Obama for speaking up on this very complicated issue! There are millions of people who would like their voices to be heard in support of saving lives, and improving quality of life with stem cell research!

I agree with all of you that Bush has taken our country in the absolute wrong direction in these verrry long years of his corrupt administration. I hope the next administration (whoever that may end up being) will indeed reach out to the citizens and netizens of this nation, and listen to all of us, rather than just the so-called "moral majority", the religious right, or those who have more money or power. It seems to me that "W" has become the "great divider" rather than a uniter. We need someone in the White House who will not try to further his own agenda, but instead, be accepting of other view points, other ideas, other opinions, and someone who will bring us together, to move forward, and to create positive change in our world!

Still hoping and waiting......

light and peace, jess
