Anaon "An harar hag ar stered" 3'' cd-r
A
3" CDR packaged with delicate papyrus-like paper, embossed with black
alchemical and geometric symbols, some of them recognizable - male,
female, the sun, Alpha and Omega, Michael - and some of them not. A
tiny slip of barely legible script with the band's name and track
titles, surrounded by a strangely proportioned palm print. The vocals
are deeply masculine, almost chanting monastically, as if in someplace
heavy with ritual and incense. I think the language is Breton, and it's
beautiful, to the very untrained ear sounding like an austere mixture
of Latin and Slavic and Celtic, the vowels stretched out to moans,
sometimes almost sensual in nature, sometimes compelling pleas. The
instruments are kept simple, one or two at a time as secondary
accompaniment to the words, acoustic guitar and fantastic chimes. The
five tracks are over far too quickly, each melding perfectly with the
whole album but retaining unique emotions. 10/10 --
