Day 11 - After a somewhat long morning of recovery form an alcohol induced slumber... Eric and I woke up and headed into Manhattan. It was a pretty lazy touristy day for the most part until we headed back to Brooklyn to meet up with Whitney and Ben to head off to our Sunday show in none other than... you guessed it... Trenton, NJ. In hindisght it may have been a bad call on my part to book Trenton two nights in a row... I was under the impression that an all ages show at The Millhill basement would have been good even if on a Sunday considering the good things we had heard about NJ all ages basement shows. For this instance... I was horribly wrong. The nicest way to say it would be that we were fucked over by a promoter who didn't give two shits about the show as he was due to be out of town for the SXSW festivities in Austin, TX that weekend. When we were arrived we were greeted by another punk band... who were quick to tell us that they were the only other band on the bill and that they were not from Trenton.. but from hours away from a place in West Virginia. This should have been our que to pack up our shit and head home... but as we were being fed free drinks by the bartender, and didn't have anything else to do for the evening we figured... fuck it... it's a free practice session if nothing else. As has been par for the course on this tour we heard one of those all to familiar lines (of which I will be posting a top 10 of at the end of the tour) "We're going to go ahead and wait to start the show since no one is really here". We waited for 3 hours...but heard an amazing story from the bartender who admitted to being a former touring musician. I'll share what I can remember with you cause it's great.
"There we were recording in Staten Island recording our CD and we had rented a hotel at the Marriot. We had gotten completely shitfaced throughout the day and were gladly carrying it over into the evening. So I'm passed out on the bed with my head hanging over the edge and I feel a warm wet sensation on my head... I wake up and my guitar player is pissing on me. At this point I do what any person would do and I punch him in the dick. He flys backward like a cartoon character and lands ass first into a newly purchased acoustic guitar which he crushes... and I run into the restroom to wash off the piss. When I come out of the restroom he's still sitting there half naked and confused in his guitar and says to me... man you'll never believe what just happened to me... I went to the bathroom and was taking a piss and a fist flew out of the toilet and punched me in the dick...." So far I think that's one of the best drunken stories that we have heard in quite some time. So as I was saying... 3 hours later, at 11 the show started. The West Virginia band played first, mostly a bunch of amaturish Operation Ivy and Rancid covers..for about a half hour or so before we were up. The problem being was that they loaded out their gear and never came back into the venue leving us to play to the bar tender the door guy and at one point one of their friends. SETOFF WOULD LIKE TO GIVE A BIG FUCK YOU TO THOSE INCOSIDERATE ASSHOLES FROM WEST VIRGINIA THAT DECIDED THAT IT WAS ALRIGHT TO SMOKE OUTSIDE INSTEAD OF DOING THE RIGHT THING AND SUPPORT THE BAND THATS PLAYING. As the night ended we looked forward to the next two days... which were days off for us in NY, it will be awhile before we come back to Trenton. For these next two days, all I can offer is an account of events that I was apart of as Ben was working, Eric was very sick, and Whitney was spending time with Val. I spent some time with each of the guys... but never really all three. Day 12- This was a nice relaxing day in NY for Eric and Me. Ben had to work which was the case for most of our week stint while staying in Brooklyn. Whitney by this point was available by phone, but was enjoying time in NY with his girlfriend Val who had flown out for the week. Eric and I walked all over... and ended up seeing Watchmen that night... which was pretty badass... but other than that there wasn't much else happening. Day 13 - St. Patricks Day. By this point I am recovering from being sick.. and Eric has been sick for the entire tour. The van seemed to serve as some kind of incubator keeping the sickness alive. Eric decided to head to the doctors to get some meds. I met up with Whitney and a crew of his friends at an amazing place in Chinatown for lunch called Joe's Shanghai. I'd highly reccomend this place to anyone who is in NY as the specialty "soup buns" are amazing. Whit, Val, Jesse and I then turned tourist and spent the day walking around chinatown and the downtown area complete with a stop to the spot where the twin towers used to stand. The night ended with Ben and I hitting up an Irish Pub downtown for some Guiness and Whiskey. Day 14 - A morning of recovery was followed by taking off early to Asbury Park, NJ for our show. We left about 2, and Ben would take the train in and meet us later that evening. Asbury Park was a much nicer place than Trenton, although it seemed to be more of a summer community as many of the businesses seemed to be closed for the winter. Asbury Lanes is where we were set to play for the night. This venue had to be one of the coolest places that we have played. It is a bowling alley that they have constructed a stage over the middle 4 lanes. The show was a good one... but once again we were playing with out of town bands this time it was 2 bands from Brooklyn. This was our best show of the tour at this point... and we had a blast.
