I am funny, consequently and in keeping with the "Law of Attraction" as defined in The Secret, like attracts like, I hang out with funny people. Our conversations border on genius funny. We laugh and build off each others comments and create entire universes of funniness in our diatribes between each other.
I was sitting in a restaurant in Chicago the other day by myself and doodling on a paper place mat waiting out a sudden down pour, anticipating my Mediteranean Omlette with sundried tomatoes, spinach and feta cheese, when the conversation at the table next to me between two 20'ish aged females, peaked my interest. Not be because it was interesting -- I had been eavesdropping for a while and there was no content to it. Something about shoes and an upcoming birthday party. What got my interest was that they suddenly laughed.
"I ate all my salad." Laughed the first female - a blonde.
"Me too." Giddy and laughing responded the other female.
I thought "okay now it will be a conversation worth listenting in on" and I eagerly anticipated the follow up, the punchline to the conversation....I don't know maybe...."Well then, let's go purge and order pie now!!" But nope...nothing came...that was it. The whole conversation. And yet the laughter continued they dabbed at their eyes with a paper napkin to dry the tears from their laughter and clutched their sides.
That got me to thinking: What do they find funny? Maybe I should envy a life so simplified that salad actually holds that much potential for humor. I don't fault them, I am fascinated by it. Maybe, these are the same folks who, on occassion, sit in the front row at a comedy show and don't laugh. Maybe they are waiting for me to talk about salad. Same ones who when asked "How was the show?" Reply..."I didn't get it. She wasn't that funny."
