Fred was having trouble with Ileana Sonnabend who was being rotten, not wanting to give some drawings of mine back.
Bianca came to lunch at the office and Jamie asked her if she was (laughs) from Uganda— because she was talking about loss of human rights and secret police killings in "my country"— and she nearly killed him. She said, "Nicaragua, Nicaragua."
Worked in the afternoon. At 6:00 left to go to Adela Holzer’s (cab $3.50). Bob was being crazy and didn’t want to go, said she had no money. But she has a whole house, 216 East 72nd Street, and I liked the way it looked. She was entertaining James Coco and his boyfriend.
When I got home the phone rang and it was Philip Niarchos and he wanted to come over to see my house but I didn’t want him to so I said I was already in bed.

James Coco (1930 - 1987) was an Emmy winning actor who was also nominated for Oscar and Tony awards.

Philip Niarchos is the son of Stavros Niarchos, and the father of Stavros Niarchos III.
When Philip commissioned Andy to paint his portrait, Andy created a series of pictures based on CAT-scans of his skull.

I try to think of James Coco as little as possible, which isn't hard! Although I think he did loose a lot of weight, and even wrote a cookbook.

I know I should be dazzled by this art, but I am not. I am always amazed at how cheap the cabs were back then. I should keep an expense diary. Hmmm.... I LOVE YOU WIGGY!!

This was the last in a long line of skull paintings that Warhol had painted throughout the years. They can even be seen as a continuation of his celebrated 'Death and Disaster' series. Also, the skulls (as well as 'Death and Disaster') belong to the 'momento mori' art tradition, which goes back centuries.
From Wikipedia: "Memento mori is a Latin phrase that may be freely translated as "Remember that you are mortal," "Remember you will die," or "Remember your death". It names a genre of artistic creations that vary widely from one another, but which all share the same purpose, which is to remind people of their own mortality."
Warhol's use of a CAT scan puts an extremely updated twist on the 'momento mori' genre.

Self Portrait with Skull (1978)

Skull (1976)

Damien Hirst has received a lot of publicity over his momento mori artworks:

Damien Hirst- The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991)
Glass, steel, silicone, shark and 5% formaldehyde solution

Damien Hirst- For the Love of God (2007)
Platinum, diamonds and human teeth

I really don't know what the story is behind the CAT scan portrait. Maybe Warhol got tired of painting portrait after portrait, so he did something different with Niachos, and Niarchos was feeling adventurous. Philip Niarchos is a major, major art collector, as was his father Stavros. Philip bought at auction a Basquiat that went for 5 times what the second most expensive Basquiat was sold for. Also in Niarchos' collection are Picasso's 'Yo Picasso' and Van Gough's 'Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear,' though that might not be it's formal title(!)

To this day, Bianca Jagger identifies herself as a 'human rights activist' and campaigns continually. Although the rest of the world will always identify her as 'Mick Jagger's ex-wife'!
