Oxford's Punk Scene Turns Twenty
The twenty-year anniversary of Oxford's First Punk Show is December 19th.
Oxford's D.I.Y. Punk Scene had its first show on December 19, 1987 at "Gentry's Shack," a small building on South 8th street. The show featured Oxford's first two punk bands, Nightmare on Sesame Street and 4 Dead Fish, and was organized by the Assault With Intent To Free fanzine collective, which also published its very first issue twenty years ago as well. Both NOSS and Dead Fish continued to organize and play shows from 1987-1989, at the infamous Hoka Theater as well as house parties in the Oxford area. Assualt With Intent to Free published for five years (1987-1991) until it was absorbed into the Profane Existence collective in Minneapolis. Since 1987, Oxford's punk scene has produced many great bands such as The Neckbones, The Withdrawls, The Sleepwalkers (among others), and has hosted a slew of touring punk bands. Former members of Oxford's first punk bands are now in The Cooters, The Captain Midnight Band, and both Tom Queyja and Kwasi Buffington are solo musicians.
It all got started twenty years ago today, December 19, 1987. We've found a recording of the show, and have uploaded a song to the newly updated 4 Dead Fish page.
