Current mood: productive Category: Art and Photography
I get a lot of people asking me to film for them for free or for credit & food. Here is the deal, I been filming concerts and gigs since I was 15. That is now 19 years ago. Dang I'm getting old, lol. I stopped doing free bees in th elate 90s. I was getting paid since 1994 for my video work and once in a while I would do a free video to build my reel. But it's always been this way since many years of people thinking I will film for them for free because I'm hip-hop culture. It's all business and this is how I make a living if video productions. People use our culture as a way to try and get favors because everyone in hip-hop is suppose to be family. I just did a free be in Utah filming my cousins wedding. Now that is family. With todays economy and living here in the Bay area California, there is no time for free non paid work. I even been having to charge some of my close friends only for editing. If I have time I hook my close people up or when it relates to my project I do trades if I really need the footage. But lately I'm way behind and honestly don't have time to do anything for free. I just got another common message today right after I did a status update about this to trade my service for one of their songs. Well when the time comes when I need music for my projects for trade I may concider, but at the moment I can't. I have over 600 hrs plus of footage of just one of my films that is way behind. I still have many other projects I'm catching up on, so hope you can imagine.
Shooting is one thing but the editing takes the most time. A small music video with many cuts or a corporate video with some simple graphics can still take allot of time in editing and prepping for the web or DVD. Also there is wear and tear of the use of equipment. Equipment sometimes fails and cost allot to fix. Hours used on these professional cameras can cost allot when needing cleaning. Extra storage for big projects can cost extra as well. Also every year technology changes, so it cost money to keep up with modern demands. Thanks for taking the time to read this post and thank you for understanding that what I do is my art, passion and my job to pay the bills.
