Here is some advice for anyone that is interested in finding a dachshund puppy to call your own. Trust us, we are dachshunds.

VERY IMPORTANT: Please do not buy from a pet store or a backyard breeder that places ads in the local newspaper or on craigslist. Puppies from these places almost definately came from A PUPPY MILL! Very very bad. Puppies from puppy mills are a result of poor breeding, which leads to sickness, genetic disorders and likely death. Not to mention that these places must NOT be supported! We want them to die a quick death, in return for all the death they have caused. (For more on puppy mills, see our blog)

Instead, get your dachshund from a licensed breeder, or even better, a dachshund rescue! There are many great dachshund rescues that need a loving home, just as much as a bouncing weiner puppy. To find a licensed, real breeder you can ask your local vet or go on websites like dachsie.org and others and ask good weiner dog lovers for a referral in your area. You can also go to the AKC's website. They are very trustworthy!

http://www.akc.org/breeds/dachshund/index.cfm

Some facts you should know:

1. As puppies, we are REALLY HARD to pottytrain (note the song "Unpottytrainable"--we didnt make that up...) Prepare to have your new dachshund bundle of love pee and poop all over the house, no matter how hard you try to teach it. I repeat, we are very hard to pottytrain, not like big dogs, who somehow pick it up way faster.

2. We are stubborn and quirky. We just do weird unexplainable things. Like the fact that Piper is scared to cross this certain part of the hall. It's just hardwood floor, like the rest of it. But she sits there and cries, until finally deciding to go for it, skidding out and leaping across this mysterious threshhold. We can be a big pain in the butt when you want us to do something, cause we may just not feel like it. However, this trait makes us very funny, and we are known among circles as the little clown breed.

3. Dachshunds have very sensitive backs, as does any breed with short legs and long backs. You have to be really, really careful about us jumping, and running up and down stairs. Our mom and dad constantly try to keep us from jumping up and down off the couch because it is really bad for our backs! Of course, they have a hard time, though, because again, we are extremely stubborn. If the dachshund jumps too much, they may either break their back, wake up paralyzed one morning, need surgery or all of the above. Be careful with your diddle dachshund.

4. You have to be really cautious with us and little kids. For some reason, most dachshunds are scared of little kids and bark at them. This might be because we know that kids think we are dolls and handle us in the wrong way. Another dog from Piper's litter was picked up by a neighborhood kid. He dropped her and broke her back--as a little puppy!! They had to put her to sleep. This is SO sad and should not have happened! But it can happen, all too easily, so carry your dachshund making sure that the back is supported well.

5. We LOVE to eat, but we must be kept slim and trim for the sake of our backs. Overweight, waddling dachshunds might make you giggle, but it is no laughing matter. This puts so much strain on our back! Of course, I Piper have kept my glorious hourglass figure, but we're not so sure about Scooter. We know he's got tons of fur, and mom takes him on walks, but....he still somehow always looks a little chubby. Perhaps we will shave him again to make sure he is on track.

There is lots more to know, and there are many great books about dachshunds, so if you really are serious, check them out.

Thanks for reading!

Love Piper and Scooter

Fabulous post. Our dachshunds have steps up to the bed and couch, but still one of them is very stubborn and insists on jumping. And housebreaking...don't get me started!

All of this is so true and my mommy knows about the potty training. At least she understood before she got me. She tells me no jumping and picks me up and down alot. She knows cause when she was a teenager(many years ago but tell her i said that) she lost a doxie from back surgery. She was young and didn't know about the back thing. Anyways I have babbled enough. Woof.

Odie - Live Free or Die Hard!

My mommy said that the potty trainer part is so very true! I was potty trained until I turned 1 year old, then I had a brain fart & forgot how to be potty trained. Then when I was just over 2 I realized I could lift my leg like a "real man-dog" and decided to lift on everything and I do mean everything! I was lifting my leg on everything in my path.....outside & inside!! So I was no longer potty trained.....housebroken. Now I'm 3 and I can ring a bell to go outside but, and it's a big but, if you don't let me out at that very moment I pee. And I now have to wear a belly band so I pee in the pad that's in the belly band.

Mommy says I'm just a real stubborn dog! But she still loves me!!

Love,
Odie

2 Cute Doxies

All of this is sooo true about us doxies. We are definitely the best most entertaining pets but we do have our issues. I, Oscar, just out of the blue one day decided to sit and stare at mom and then jump in her lap and not quit bugging her until she realized that I was trying to tell her I wanted to go out. Now, when I need to pee, I just do the same thing. Luckily, my mom was a fast learner. Meg, on the other hand, could care less about telling anyone when she needs to go. Mom is still trying to get the stairs pee free. It's the only spot with carpet left in the house and there is usually a gate at the bottom to keep us downstairs until the parents go with us but somehow Meg still sneaks it. And you may think that we aren't learning things, but we are actually very very smart. We just choose to let you know what we want you to know. When humans aren't looking we can do just about anything.

we think thats great that you are trying to educate other potential dachshund owners! My mommy was raised with dachshunds- i'm about the 10th family dachshund, so she knew all this, but loved me enough to adopt me anyway. Another great resource for getting a dachshund is the Dachshund Rescue... thats where my mommy got me. Why go to a breeder when there are hundreds of unwanted Dachshunds out there that need a good home? I am very greatful my mommy looked there. It's SO TRUE about the housebreaking. I'm 3 and i STILL have the occasional mishap. My sister, a Dalmatian has never once gone in the house. I just dont understand why she got it so quickly? hehe. you guys rock!!! Love you!

Yeah its me

Anybody have any suggestions on how to get my "Buddy" to use his new steps we bought him? We heard about the potential problems for injuries from jumping on and off the bed, couch, etc and bought these steps. But Buddy would rather jump then use them. Right now they just seem to be a decoration. We tried being supportive and reinforcing positive feedback when he attempted to use them but he really lost interest quick in the steps. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.
Signed Buddys mommy,
Suzan

I just got my Tut some steps. He too wanted NOTHING to do with them. I finally had to "walk" him up them. We did this several times. Anytime he wanted up on the bed we would go to stairs and I would tell him, "If you want to be up here with Mama, you have to use the steps". it took less than a week for him to get it. He is now a pro at going up. Down is another matter! The steps are bigger than him (he is a mini) and I think it scares him to walk down. You might want to try a treat on 1st unreachable step, and then move it up untill he makes it.
If he is like any weiner I have ever met, he will do anything for food! Good luck!
