Don’t miss this fabulous celebration of music, gear, and guitars. The big event is September 11-13 in Livermore, California. Heck, they’re closing the entire downtown area for this festival.

Here’s some news on what’s happening at Guitar Player Live!...

• A special Shrapnel Records concert on the evening of Friday, September 11, that features Richie Kotzen, Michael Lee Firkins, and Chris Duarte.

Guitar Player’s first ever Jason Becker Award presented on Friday night to the courageous Jason Becker, who continues to write stunning guitar music even though stricken by Lou Gerhrig’s Disease.

• The fifth annual Guitar Player’s Guitar Superstar competition on Saturday, where ten finalists battle it out in front of judges Jennifer Batten, Elliot Easton, Greg Hampton, Steve Lukather, and Earl Slick for the 2009 title.

• The Triple Threat Guitar closer on Sunday with Laurence Juber, Jennifer Batten, and Vicki Genfan.

• Educational clinics all weekend from guitar stars and Guitar Player editors that will help you sound better and play better.

• A block-long expo tent filled with cool guitars, amps, effects pedals, accessories, and other music gear that you can check out and buy.

• A bevy of guitar-rific outdoor concerts featuring the Van Halen tribute Hot For Teacher, acoustic wizard Pete Huttlinger, bass demon Stu Hamm, and other regional and local acts.

Shrapnel Records Night
Friday, September 11
8:00 pm
Mike Varney started Shrapnel Records in 1980—a good time for hot guitarists in pop culture—and worked with fretboard burners such as Yngwie Malmsteen, Marty Friedman, Greg Howe, Richie Kotzen, Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, David Chastain, and Tony McAlpine, among others. Starting in 1982, Mike also penned one of Guitar Player’s most popular columns—Spotlight—and exposed tons of unknown and unsigned players to the GP community and beyond (one such find was Jennifer Batten). Eventually, Shrapnel evolved into the Shrapnel Label Group, which includes the Shrapnel, Tone Center, and Blues Bureau imprints. Current releases include CDs by Rick Derringer, Pat Travers, Michael Schneker, and Steve Kahn.

You may be getting the idea that Mike has an almost magical talent for discovering and nurturing transcendent guitarists, and you’d be right. Tonight you’ll thrill to three of his favorite guitarslingers: Richie Kotzen, Michael Lee Firkins, and Chris Duarte. Prepare yourself for some ferocious shredding.

Bonus! Guitar Player magazine will present Shrapnel artist Jason Becker with its first Guitar Player Award for Inspiration at the show. Jason is a phenomenally talented player who was stricken by Lou Gerhig’s Disease in 1989, but still composes stunning music via computer.
