Minimalism was created for installation in an empty black-box theater long before video was something everyone did. It seems low-tech now but Marta Werner's & Bob Waterhouse's performance, and the text are still evocotive. The two separate images were designed to be projected on opposite walls; each image was over 12 feet tall. The text was written as two separate monologues that were then interlaced to express the separateness and also the simultaneity of two people's thoughts as they sit in empty rooms. For the woman, it is night and a candle is burning. For the man there is daylight and rain. Ghostly images of the two actors [Marta Werner and Bob Waterhouse] were projected directly onto the black walls of an empty box-style theater in which no chairs were arranged. Spectators experienced a space alive, beautiful, and expressively empty.
