This is NOT the Rainbow Brite we all knew and loved during the 80’s. Like many of the "fine-as-they-were" children's toys and characters (Dora the Explorer, as a recent example), Rainbow Brite has gotten a complete, sexier makeover. Somewhere, deep inside, the young girl in me is crying.

Here is Hallmark’s official Rainbow Brite website (be sure to look at the animations and watch the video… It’s not what it used to be):

RB Fan site (including inappropriate Halloween costume pictures??):

In respect to the original Rainbow Brite, I've also included some vintage images of Rainbow Brite...

This is so sad and senseless, wonder what they'd do with Captain Planet?

I think they updated her look to make her look older & appeal to the older girls....so they can make money.  Older girls can get more allowance out of their parents.
It's sad that they just can't keep the original character's style. All they had to do was sharpen up the animation.

While I do agree that the new Dora is a disgrace, I have to say....I really don't see much of a difference between the old light brite and the new one. The new ones hair is a little less poofey, the skirt looks a little longer (which is a good thing in my opinion), but other than that I don't really see a big change.

I agree.

I was pretty obsessed with the cartoon when I was little (I was going to marry Red Butler!!), and from the cartoon still and toys, I don't see anything that alarms me. The concept is more modern, but without turning her into something distasteful. It all comes down to the messages the show will be sending out, since this is where children emotionally invest in the characters and plot. As for now, I can't dismiss her makeover as a negative change.

I was absolutely In LOVE with Rainbow Brite as a kid,I had this VHS that was part live-action {people in  big cartoon suits} and part cartoon..or were they all like that? It's been so long I cant remember.
This is waaaaayyy better than Bratz dolls though.
I'll probably be searching Ebay some day,or my old storage for the classic Rainbow dolls for my kids:P

The old Rainbow Brite was sooooooooo much cuter. Fuck this sexualization bull shit. It makes me so mad. Little girls don't need to be introduced to sexy images. It's such bull shit!
