Last Friday I got the huge pleasure of participating in a first annual charity event for a brilliant new organization. A Simple Heart Org is a non-profit group of helping hands. A group of friends donating their time and money to help the less fortunate. At first, the city threatened to shut them down for "illegally" feeding the homeless. As donations increased and people began seeing their work, they expanded to even more community service projects. The group began volunteering at Children's Medical Center, the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas, and started a reading campaign that helped put books into the hands of children that could not afford them. Please check out their site if you want to help in any way at all. It's refreshing to know that there are still people out there that want to help simply for the sake of helping.
So... on Friday Oct 3 I got to play at their 1st Annual "Keep it Simple Benefit Concert". It was one hell of a good time. I met the rest of the guys on the bill at the KNON 89.3 studios for a quick plug for the show later. The talent in the room was greatly inspiring. I played a tune off my upcoming solo record and tried to make sense when I spoke. Then followed by two guys on the road from Atlanta, Ryan Horne and Micah Dalton, playing separately and together. I highly recommend you listen to these songsters. Simply amazing voices and material. Finally The Hammerknockers filled the room with sweet bluegrass sound.
The show was at the legendary Sons of Hermann Hall. It was an honor and a trip to be on the same stage as so many Texas legends. The night went off like fireworks. Everyone played as if it was going to be the last time. Phenomenal. A Simple Heart sold many shirts and is now smoothly on the way to sending underprivileged kids to camp in Duango next year.
