Monster Energy Drink - sad story The first day of  a new Spring Semester 2008 I received a call from Monster.  It was an exhilarant feeling because I had been offered the position of being a spokes model for Monster Energy Drink.  Monster has certain requirements and expectations of a model's physical attributes, character, and responsibilities.  I gladly accepted the offer, but then come to realize the first gig fell on the weekdays of my school schedule.  It was upsetting for the gentleman who hired me to hear about my situation, since we both had an agreement for me to prove to this company I would be a great asset, but sadly there wouldn't be any weekend shows that would workout with my hectic school schedule.

Modeling since 2004, I have worked for different elite and exquisite companies who have a great reputation, and from each year I have learned what mistakes I made which mproved and matured me to become the young professional woman I am today.

I made a decision of going back to school full time about a year and a half ago.  During that time I had many offers to do acting and other wonderful opportunities, but because of school reasons I wasn't able to work.  Money, is the foundation of many causes, whether it be for surviving with food, school, family, or for show off purposes, etc. and that is why it is important to finish school and get a degree. Regardless of how much income you can make from different opportunities that arise, it is extremely hard to not accept it. In my situation it's very tempting to make a lot of it, especially at times when you're hurting or even if it's for a few hours involving a lot of money.  The easier to make more money in the less amount of time is what some people ideally would rather chose to do rather than make less for a long period of time.

Think about it! would you want to make more money in less time? but the reality of this question is, "Are you willing to accept the cost benefits from making that paper in that less amount of time? my answer is " ABSOLUTLY NOT!"

It's going to be a hard life long lesson for those who chose to make the wrong decision. Luckily, I have been blessed with many people who affected me in making all the right decisions.  I also independently, know how it is to work in the real world.  The stereotypes I get from being a model are absurd! But you know what? I know how it is to be in the real world of Business because I've also worked a full time-job at Kaiser Hospital while going to school, modeling, etc. and that is why I picked that major in school.

As stated from my last blog, "To hate and despise others is a sign of weakness and selfishness. To hate someone takes all your good energy & prevents you from realizing your dreams" I know where I'm going with my life, so why care about what anyone else thinks, just watch and see who I become.

My mom used to be a model and she had the same problem. She told me that education is the most important thing you can do for yourself and your future, especially when it comes to making money. It's hard to be a model your whole life and after your modeling days you need something to fall back on. I say pursue your education first.

i dont agree with the term used in "wrong decision". Though it may not be a keen decision on your part doesn't mean those with less oportunities shouldn't go for the quick buck not knowing what lies ahead. We can't predict the weather, let alone future opportunities.

Nothing is for sure, nothing is for certain, and nothing lasts forever.

sounds like you'll be fine- but one cannot put a price on life experience. school will always be there- so if your dream experience comes along- put the rest on the backburner, or attemp both at once. sleep is overrated!! :)~

yes you have to weigh all the pros and cons...... it's great to get your degree but not if you have to pass up an opportuniaty that would make you set for a long time...... i was in college for Mechanical Engineering........ decided to walk away from that and start my own company, i never looked back....... I guess doing both was out of the question? I mean missing a few classes isn't usually that big of a deal if you make up the work. It's your life though so do what you want. Good luck.

An education is always the best choice! Regardless of how much money you make or don't make...what we, as individual, can contribute to society is the edification of our minds, respect towards our fellow man, and compassion towards our loved ones.
If you have to ask yourself if education is worth the cost and trouble then you never have stood on the podium and received your degree while your family and friends cheer you on. There is amount of money that can buy that!!

I find what you say very interesting. "so why care what anyone thinks" yet you ask people to read and post a comment concerning your blog. An old man told me,: Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life". So if your doing what you love and your happy I would say that's the right path. Money doesn't buy love, happiness and health but living a good life does.

Enriching your mind is forever. Enriching your pockets is temporary. You're doing the right thing. No matter how much money you pass up now, you will get it ten fold in return with a degree later. I'm sure you have plenty of other offers in the works and they will be there when you're done. It's Monster's loss not yours.

Well, I think it all depends on what situation a particular person is in and what their long term goal is...and whether you made the right decision or wrong decision is yet to be determined...however, if you see yourself not making modeling a long term career, then you're probably on the right path...in the long run, if you see yourself working in the business world, working a 9-5 and being happy with it, then, again, you probably made the right decision...when you ask the question, would I want to make more money in less time, its hard to answer that in a vacuum...because, ultimately, for me, what I want is financial freedom and the real question is, am I going to be able to accomplish that trading my time for money....because thats what people essentially do...trade their time for money...and that's where the limitations come in...the richest people in the world are rich because they've learned how to leverage their money...instead of trading their precious time for money, they've learned how to make their money work for them...its like being a singer or actor...theyre not only rich because they got paid millions for the project, but they get all that residual income from reruns, or sales, blah blah blah...its too long to try to explain in a blog but if u get a chance, read Rich Dad, Poor Dad...excellent book...might open your eyes a little bit...again, Im not saying school and getting a degree is not important...but at the end of the day, I would hope you've done some internships or networking within the business world, or whatever field a person may choose because its not so important what you know, but who you know...and the one thing that school doesnt teach you is how to be rich...just tells u how to work hard or that you have to work hard....not about working hard, its about working smart...school prepares you for the whole paradigm of trading time for money and as I stated before, if you're ok with the idea of a 9-5 in the business world, being successful, even making a 6 figure income or higher, working for someone else or whatever, then thats great, by all means, get that degree and do your thing....in your case, I believe your comparing making a lot of money now with modeling versus going to school and making a little bit less so u can get your degree...am I right? So, what happens once you get that degree and you're done with school? What's your next step? I think if you can answer that question, it will help you be at peace with your decision, if youre not already at peace that is...in the long run, for me, working less and making more is absolutely the goal...preferably with real estate...had I known then while I was in school what I know now, I wouldve been that much closer to financial freedom...now it'll just take a lil longer...so if i had to answer whether Id like to make more money in less time, then yes, thats the goal...not sure what u meant by being able to accept the cost benefits from making that paper in that less amount of time...bec isnt that what ur trying to get, the cost benefit? sometimes it comes down to a choice bet doing what u love and making less or doing something temporary and making more...and yes thats a tough decision...but whatevers gonna make u happy long term is prob the right path...only you will know at the end.

Being the professional that you are, you have made a hard but wise choice....... Most people live for now and really don't have long term goals. I for example would have taken the $$$$ but it is more difficult to make the wisest choice. Many people are always kicking themselves for choices that they(we) made and saying what if????? When you make the correct choices you never say that. There will be many more offers I'm sure, so don't feel down because you are making the best choice for your future.

EVERYONE MUST CHANGE FOR THE BETTER
Mr. Hernandez

I believe that your outlook on this situation holds true to your character. Money comes and goes, their are plenty of modeling positions available now or in the future. Its easy to become a professional model, but better to become a role model for your profession. You have shown that brains and beauty hold the same revenue and appreciation. I appreciate your modeling work, but I also find your education just as intriguing. I am a business owner and yeah with you modeling for MONSTER would bring me a great bottom line, I'd rather know that you are doing well in your personal life as well. Corprate America tends to overlook this, but you don't. Keep forging ahead.

P.S. Never give enough of yourself because you may end up with nothing enough to give back

Doesn't sound like a sad story, but it does sound more like a blessing in disguise. There will be more opportunities for you in the future, especially with your talent, and much more so with an education in tow. Secure your future by concentrating on your education now. Good luck!

First of all woman, never believe you made a wrong choice. That is LIFE! Life is a road of many turns, those turns are the choices we make. You are young and doing it, living life! The point is YOU made that CHOICE. Smile, YOU of all people know, that you are the only person capable of achieving what you want in life, present and future. As far as the gentleman who hired you, as a GENTLEMAN he should know that all relationships require COMPROMISE, business or personal! As far as I'm concerned, Its his, (MONSTER'S) loss. Education is important, I know, I've traveled down your road. Once again, SMILE it's only gonna get better. Anyways, my answer to your question? You're right "ABSOLUTELY NOT!"

You came to a crossroad and had to make a tough one. The decision to stick with school is the right one. You mentioned Kaiser, so I assume you are in the health care field. You will get a lifetime of satisfaction here and make a difference because there is a shortage (eventually, you'll end up making good $ here too). You will be rewarded in the long run for your dedication and smarts.

Getting that degree is what counts. You can deny all these joe-schmos now. But when you accomplish your goals. You can create your own business scheme.
So yeah, lose out on the short term. But in the long term, you will def. come out winning.

If you felt that your education is more important then the job they offered you from a long term perspective. It takes a lot of character to walk away from jobs some people would do anything to get there hands on, but I will say those jobs might not come to you again. I can definitely see your dilemna and applaud the decision.

Good things happen to those who wait. It was not your time; and when it is time, you will know it. Also, "Carpe Diem (seize the day)." You will only have one shot, so don't miss the opportunity. Grasp it, and don't let go. Hold on, tight!

Your last paragraph is so true but I wish to ask of you and others: as there is only right and money really is the root of all evil, the axiom - the truth shall set you free - must be incomplete.

In today's civilization - not THE free and democratic society built around the greater truth, everyone missed the reality that the truth not only sets one person free it washes away all that is untruth.

I live on nothing - money wise, yet I feast like a king which begs the question, how can money be the creator of life as you ascribe.

In a society with legal rights, there is no need for governments nor the monetary system because neither are natural in any sense.

Please, don't forget that cities are/were solely centers of commerce with no regard for human life or the real needs for life, i.e. clean air, water and fauna that thrive in this environment.

Until recently, industrial farming and habitat distruction that this entails was not part of our society - only the civilized world does this or did this in England and Europe. (China historically worked to keep the bar set to peasants and their well-being unlike the civilized people since the 1770's.)

Money will not set anyone free because it is not part of the truthful world that pre-existed civilization!

Be prepared of a radical reformation process that will soon sweep across this planet as truth will wash away all that man has created based on untruth!

Dont listen to anyone who tries to hand you the "school will always be there" line, even if it's you wispering it in your own ear.It is SO much harder to get back in once you are out, and for me, even being like 2 years older than my classmates made it a bit awkward. You ar edoing a great job at dispelling the "model" stereotype. Hang in there, keep at it and when you graduate you will have twice the opportubnities as well as a real foundation for a career. Because I hate to say it , but we do all get older and looks eventually wont get the paychecks,, (Don't get me wrong ,pf course, you are a knockout) . But as they say "dont put all your eggs in one basket.." You are an impressive and admirable young woman who will get all you want and more. Be well.
