Current mood:  bummed

Yes, we are closing on November 1st. The Launching Pad is run by a nonprofit group named Full Circle and the board recently voted unanimously to close down the Lauching Pad at the end of this month. This was something we have been talking about for the last few months. We have had numerous issues and problems that were not able to be resolved.

1) We have had repeated problems getting insurance coverage for the venue. We simply can not continue operating without having insurance coverage in case someone were to get injured at a show. Apparently, no one wants to insure activities involving teenagers anymore. We searched for two months and finally decided we can not take the risk to continue operating without insurance.

2) Our landlord feels it is fair to charge $1500 (yes, you read that correctly) per month for our nonprofit venue even though the roof leaked for two months. The best month we have ever had pulled in $2000 total and most months we have made just enough to pay our rent and insurance.

3) Because of 2 above, we have never had the money to pay anyone that helps out at shows. No one involved in the LP has ever made even ONE single dime (myself, the guy who started the LP, has actually lost close to $400 of my own money). We have survived for over one year only because of the tremendous volunteers who have helped us run shows, run sound, and promote. Unfortunately, people who volunteer often don't feel like there is a reason to show up when they are scheduled, do things without having to be told to do them, and keep the place looking nice. We have had a steady drop in volunteers and this led to the same two people putting in 15-35 hours EVERY week for free to keep the place running.

4) To make matters worse, there have been a handful of people who choose to hang out at the LP and who like to show their appreciation by stealing from the venue/bands or vandalizing property. In the last nine months we have had the following stolen from us:

Approximately $550

ELEVEN microphones

two direct boxes

plus several instances of other bands' gearing being stolen during shows

The last straw for us was when one of our volunteers had her VERY expensive camera stolen. She helps out at most of our shows and takes pictures of all of the bands that play the LP. Some jerk stole her camera a few weeks ago. So, there goes another one of our essential volunteers who no longer wants to work at a place that doesn't give a crap.

Oh, and who do you think has to take the time to paint over the graffiti that people paint over our logo in the front? Is writing your band name next to our logo so important that you don't care that somone then has to waste an extra hour of their free time to cover it up?

5) Which brings us to our last reason for closing....Idiots. This place was started because several of us believed that Muncie needed a place for youth to play music for their friends. 99% of the bands who play here have been amazingly supportive and SO nice to us. And 95% of the people who come to shows have been amazing as well. However, there is a small minority of people who feel its necessary to steal, vandalize, and take whatever they can without giving anything in return. I hate that the actions of a few people ruin it for everyone else. I know its not fair to those of you that love the LP. But, its also little things. Like when there are 40 people outside hanging out with their friends who don't want to pay cover and some poor local band is playing inside for 10 people. Or the kids who constantly try to sneak in for free and when we let them know they can get into shows for free anytime they want if they'd just volunteer some time, just walk away. Or the people who volunteer and then leave the cash box or sound board unattended so they can hang out with their friends or smoke cigarettes rather than help out. Or the people who leave as soon as the show is over and don't help sweep up, take out the trash, or even pick up after themselves. Or the people who steal sink handles and toilet roll dispensers. Or musicians who spit on our walls. Or musicians who have to draw penises or write over the top of other band names in the band room. Or bands who do absolutley NO promotion for shows and complain that no one showed up. Or people who say its sad that people don't come out to shows as much, but they aren't willing to help put up posters or send bulletins.

Can you see how fixing all this stuff takes time? And when its only two people left to do it, its gets old REAL fast. When the people you're trying to help just don't care anymore, you have to ask yourself "why are we still doing this?".

So, we decided to close.

I want to thank the people who have kept this venue alive and who put their hearts into it:

Mary Ogle-for putting in 40 hours some weeks just to keep the place going

Full Circle Arts Coop-for taking on the legal, financial, and management tasks

Britanny, Ian, Nicole, Sara, Robin, and the rest of the street team

Nick and Megan-for working about 90% of the shows during the last month!

Dreams of University-they get alot of crap from people, but not many people know that they were the ones who spent three weeks tearing out walls, building that stage, and turning the space from a multiroom office building into the LP. I love you guys.

Kenny Matthews-for helping with sound issues and teaching sound

I hope that some day The Launching Pad will reopen. I hope that everyone misses it so much that if it does reopen you'll all take a more active role in keeping it going. Next time, tell people to respect the space. Next time, tell people to come inside to watch bands. Next time, ask if there's anything you can do to make the place look nicer. Next time, volunteer to help out at shows or promote. I truly hope there is a "next time". Unfortunately, it can't continue with our current crazy high rent, lack of insurance, and lack of people who care enough to help.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make this place possible and kept it going as long as we could. Thanks to the bands for all of the great music. I truly hope you all keep writing new music and that you can find places to play in town. If anyone wants to donate a free building, let us know!!!!

I personally will come out right now and say that for all the shows I ever played at or booked at the LP, I feel like a douche for never bothering to help out just that little bit more. I know for a fact I could have stayed behind and helped take care of things that should have been done. We're losing something great and I honestly doubt that anyone in town will truly know what it will be like going back to an all-ages venue-less town again. It's a sad turn of events.

Well put, Alan. I think you covered everything that I wanted to.

And to everyone else: Alan doesn't give any focus to in this post is that he not only started the place but has remained the backbone of it for over a year while working at least full time at real jobs and trying to maintain a family. He's bent over backwards since August of 2007 to keep Muncie music alive, and I never would've been involved in the project if it weren't for his inspirational obstinance.

Also, there have been a lot of very helpful people and bands along the way, and it wouldn't have lasted this long without them. What people need to know is that the venue requires constant commitment and attention to keep it going, not just showing up whenever you feel like seeing people and then leaving when you want.

Sad as it is, it's a huge relief to Alan and I to have this off of our shoulders. I look forward to finding a better space and going into this as a group next time, not as two people trying not to go insane. Thanks to everyone who's expressed support.

I will miss the LP very much. I'll miss having someplace to go and hang out when I'm stressed and need to escape the dull drums of everyday life and listen to great music and watch people have fun without violence, drugs, alcohol, and bozos hitting on you just looking for a good time, like I've seen happen to some of my friends that hang out in bars, which is why I avoid bars. I'll miss being one of the only people who show up on Sunday afternoon to hang up fliers around the village and to take some of those fliers to hand out at the scramble light and hang on billboards. I'll miss feeling like an intricate part of a greater scheme. More importantly, I'll miss the people. I've met some great people through volunteering at the LP. I have no doubt that those people will go on to do great things in life, some more than others, but great things all the same. Which brings me to the one person I'll miss the most, Dr. Alan Maugherman, the master designer. It's been an honor to know, and help, the most caring, wonderful, outgoing, smart, honest, optimistic, cool, awesome, and giving man I've ever had the privilege of meeting... a man that had a dream of providing a place for mostly unsigned youth to express their feelings and soul through music at a place known as The Launching Pad, no name more fitting. The world would be better if there were more people like him. I hope that some day, hopefully in the near future, he will have the opportunity to restart his awesome dream of having a place for anyone of any age to play and hear great music, and would love to be a part of it again. I wish that people were more appreciative and accepting of the hard work and commitment that goes into believing, creating, developing, supporting, launching, and maintaining such a wonderful dream. Thank you Alan... and thanks to Full Circle and everyone else involved for supporting such as great dream...and thanks to all the great bands I've had the pleasure of enjoying. I feel soo sorry that it didn't work out and that there were soo many problems involved with keeping that dream alive for its short longevity. The Launching Pad will forever be a mark in the music history of Muncie, Indiana... truly missed. I wish there were more I could do, but like Alan said, there just weren't enough people that cared and just enough people that caused its demise. Maybe someday it will live again... all we can do is hope.

This makes me sad that I've spent the last 6 months in california. I'm not even going to be able to come to the last show. Thank you so much Alan for all the work you've put into this. You made muncie suck a whole lot less for the past year, and while there are a handful of kids who act like they don't give a crap there are a lot of us who have always greatly appreciated what you've done for this community. Last year we lost the student center because someone broke a window, and now that the LP is going to I just don't know where all ages shows can happen other than VGR. I really wish I could have been around the last few months, or that I would have done more to help while I was there. I know I'm not alone when I say that I'm going to miss the hell out of the LP.

I don't think anyone should give Benny shit (and especially think his band shouldn't be criticized) for giving his opinion. They promote pretty well and have some huge shows, they're just (unfortunately, in my opinion) not what most of the Muncie under-21 scene wants right now. The days when the Deadbeats played the Tally were some badass times.

And, he's right. The venue did have bad service sometimes because there weren't enough volunteers or the ones that were there were hanging out with their friends instead of tending the sound board. Benny's band played one show where I was the only person working, so yeah it was pretty poor service. And the venue didn't do much of anything in the way of promotion because there were an average 1-3 people interested in promoting each week. It wasn't a smooth operation.

I am truly sorry to lose such a great place! My daughter and her friends are high school freshman, and they have enjoyed quite a few shows at the LP the last few years. Having been in attendance at one myself, i can honestly say i never had a problem letting the girls go by themselves to anything that was at the LP. They never once had any problems with anyone, and always had a great time listening to some really cool bands that they would never have heard otherwise. The cover price was amazingly low, and everyone i ever came in contact there volunteer-wise was awesome. you guys will be sorely missed, and i hope you can find another way to come back in an even more awesome way!

As sad as this is let it be a lessen to the kids that went to this place. Teens whine and cry about how boring a town is and how there is nothing to do. And again and again when the opportunity comes for them to have a place to express themselves and hang out they ruin it. Let me educated you guys for a bit. This will be the 4th or 5th all ages club that will close in muncie. I use to back in the day go to Fractions/circle d, and the kids ruined it there too. That is why i say THANK GOD IM 21 AND STILL CAN SEE SHOWS. Kids in muncie can't handle a all ages venue. ANybody that actually believes they will open a venue and be sucessful in muncie is crazy. Try Anderson, I hear the kids there actually know and understand what a scene is and do everything they can to support it.

Sorry to hear you guys are closing and best of luck to you in the future.

So, the way I understand what you are saying, is that Muncie youth aren't deserving of the opportunity for someone to believe in them? Granted that there have been all-ages clubs in the past that didn't survive in Muncie, but isn't that true of any community? But that isn't a reason for someone to not try, and to not believe in them, and to not offer the opportunity again when it promotes itself. That kind of narrow-minded thinking is what taints so many youth and why soo many of them are lost to begin with. Without someone to offer them the opportunity and show them the way, and to care, how will they ever get on the right track? The youth in Muncie aren't any different than the youth of any other city. Just because a few bad apples ruined it for the whole bunch doesn't mean we give up! We keep trying! We have to believe in them to show them how to believe in themselves and in others, and pass along that belief.

Also, may I point out that bands from all over the country came through the doors of The Launching Pad, and some of those bands brought their own fans with them. At any given show at The Launching Pad you can find kids there from any of the nearby cities and towns, and even other states. So, to say that it was just Muncie kids that caused the problems is totally wrong. There are kids, and adults too, that will search around until they find some place to cause trouble, either because they are let go to do whatever they want and the parents don't know that they are causing trouble, or they don't care that they're causing trouble, or because they are actually taught that by their parents.

The LP will ALWAYS have my support in the decisions that are made and will help when ever it is needed. I am really sad that it is closing and don't know what I will do with all my "spare" time. I know it is a smart decision to close for the financial and theft issue's and I'm terribly sorry none of my "idea's" and "engineering" didn't work to prevent the stuff that has been breaking and getting stolen. If the LP does re-open I feel that I will always be there for them :D

P.S. the LP is having shirt's for sale for only 10$

this has been the worst piece of news i've ever received in my life. i get a text saying 'the lp is closing on your birthday.' i know i have never done anything to the lp to hurt it. this place will always hold a special place in my heart, and we have to make this month the best it can be. and if you EVER need help this month, please let me know, i'll be MORE than happy to.
i always saw people outside never coming in because of the cover, and it honestly pissed me off. i payed cover everytime except for the few free shows.

we'll make the last show the best one ever.

Alan,

I'm really sorry to hear about this going to waste like it has. Its always been a dream and a major ambition of yours to spread music through and to the masses. You did this at corner stone, which i had the luxury of helping with(briefly) and then this. I understand the legality of it all, insurance. Damn corporate america! I kid i kid. But in all serious, if there is anything I learned from you over the years of counceling sessions when i was younger, was don't give up. This is a bump in the road and this is not the end. If there is anything I can do to help you further any music project in the future, I will be more than happy to lend my time and effort. You have been a major inspiration to me, and it's the least I can do. All the best! I think you should still have my house number... Give me a call sometime. We can do lunch or something. If not, message me and I will send my cell.

The real problem is that no one cared enough to do anything until the owners decided to close. I've been to the LP half a dozen times to see shows and every time I go there is a group of asshole 16 year olds standing in front of the door smoking. A lot of those kids will be sad that the LP is closing, but they never saw shows. It was just a place where their parents were comfortably with them being so they used it as a hang out place to smoke and drink skol out of water bottles.
Here's to success in the next venture, if there is one.

well, it's a shame that some people are so heartless, i know the girl who lost her camera, and i know she worked really hard to earn it.
Plus, it's not right for people to write graffiti all over the door, it's stupid.
and to the bands that drew the giant penis, i just wanted you to know how amazingly gay you are!
it's a reall dissapointer that the LP has to close, i wish it could stay open, but the landlord is a dousche and i hope that maybe someday the LP will live again!
