Here's a video of a beautiful morning in New Orleans circa the Summer of '05. It stars my friend Clint, was directed by my friend Henry, and features a bicycling horde of other friends of mine. I'm even in it, though I can't be seen for the cute girl on my handlebars. We laughed and chatted and ate free fried chicken and drank before noon between takes. It was a grand day for all involved. It was the kind of day most people don't think can be had here anymore. They are wrong. Despite the changes, the problems, the deaths and departures, we endure, as do the freedoms, alien to most of this country, that allow such days to occur. It is a music video of Clint Maedgen & The Preservation Hall Jazz Band covering The Kinks song "Complicated Life". And it goes a little something like this...

It's not the video or the song that I want you to think about, though both are good. What it represents, however, is the kind of thing we're fighting for.

I agree! I saw this a little while back and it had a profound impact on me. THIS is the type of thing I can never explain to outsiders when they ask, "why would you go back THERE?" It - not the video but what it represents - makes me even more determined to return!

I'm aware of the dangerous elements that come with the decision to my life in New Orleans... But they don't compare with the danger I face every day by NOT living there. Fish out of water!

All that corny stuff I said to you the last time I saw your newly-naked face; this is precisely what I mean. I'd pull a three ton wooden horse home in my teeth if it'd get me there any faster than the 35 days I have left to spend here. How you doin' on that Time Machine, hmm?

I agree with Kerry's comments above! It's something you can't explain to other people outside NOLA. I didnt evacuate too far and snuck back into the city early to start cleaning up the mess. In the months following i had numerous un-solicited job offers and plane tickets elswhere but couldn't comprehend accepting any of them. I don't get on MYSpace very often, but today when i was feeling really down about one of my very last friends moving out of NOLA due to "life complications", something drew me to your site and i read this old blog and watched the video. I actually welled up as i remembered great days hitting the lower quarter on my rusty bike, meeting a friend for lunch at Fiorella's Cafe, sifting through musty junk at the antique shops and getting cheap thrills playing with the plastic dog poo at Funrock'n. Lounging at the park till nightfall then changing into some funky clothes to catch that drink at the Abbey and dance at the Dervish...those days never get old to me!!! I know it means something special to everyone in their own personal way... Thanks for posting the video, it really perked me up! I think i'm gonna take the old bike for a spin and see what creatures are stirring!
