I'm glad John McCain lost in an overwhelming rejection of far right wing politics, but honestly it's a bit of a stretch to call Barack Obama an agent of change.

He supports nuclear energy, coal, AND offshore drilling
He supports the war in Afghanistan
He supports an invasion of Pakistan
He supports warrantless wiretapping and legal immunity for telecoms who help
He opposes gay marriage
He supports Israel over all other nations in the Middle East
He supports the death penalty
He supports the disastrous Drug War
His pick for Chief of Staff is Rahm Emanuel, an old school Clintonite from the conservative wing of the Democratic party who helped push through NAFTA

Barack Obama: Change you can imagine.

You're right! Nothing is going to be different than the last 8 years. Thank you for the wake-up call.

Let's all make sure to be extra cynical so we don't get our heats broke again.

There is a definite bright side to this for the cynics though. Barack Obama inspired and empowered so many people that, if/when he doesn't make a positive change in peoples' lives they may see in each of them the power to make that change themselves. People will realize (again) that we can't wait for the government to fix the problems in our lives, because it isn't in their interest to do so. If anything significant is going to change we must do it ourselves, as we have over the course of history. It's been massive popular movements that have gained the positive benefits we see in our society today - civil rights, child labor laws, workplace safety, living wages, etc. Maybe Obama's potential failures will be our gain when we take them into our own hands and become the change we demand.

Well ya know... can't please everyone at all times.... and I DO think he is a hell of a lot better pick than McSame and Scary Sarah.

-- What are valid alternatives to nuclear, coal, and offshore drilling? Solar won't work too well in areas such as Aberdeen, and those hybrid cars are too damn expensive for most
-- Well at least he supports getting out of Iraq eventually, which McCain did not
-- Most of the people in this country do not agree with gay marriage (yet), and he IS "one of them Christian guys" so of course he is not in favor of it. Realistically, a candidate who had said they WERE in favor of it would not have gotten elected.

As for the other things, I'll have to check those out.

This bulletin kind of pissed me off really, which is why I didn't reply until a day later.

Major changes -- in policy, big business, government, or even society -- often comes at a glacial pace. Women's rights, civil rights, reproductive rights etc. were NOT won overnight and without a long hard struggle.

So quit yer bitchin' and be glad the other guy didn't steal the White House.

I'm glad the bulletin made you angry. That means you care enough and feel invested enough to respond, and that means there can be a dialogue. And you're right, you can't please everybody all the time, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't stick up for what we believe. It's a shame that you disagree and that you would rather I 'stop my bitching' because you don't like what I said.

So what ARE valid alternatives to nuclear, coal, and offshore drilling? Believe it or not, there are technologies beyond solar panels and hybrid cars. Wind, geothermal heat, tidal and wave energy, and biomass are all derived from natural sources and don't harm the environment. There's plenty of wind out around the Harbor - tides and waves too...

At least he supports getting out of Iraq eventually. He also supports continuing the war in Afghanistan and unilaterally expanding it into Pakistan. In the Senate he continually voted to fund the war, voting against it only once. But at least he wants to get out of Iraq eventually...

It's true - a majority of people do still oppose gay marriage. But Obama had this thing in the bag, and as long as Democrats are viewed as stronger on the economy than Republicans he could have supported or opposed pretty much anything and still beat McCain. I DO think it's telling that a person can oppose gay marriage on the basis that they're Christian. This is the same religion that is based on kindness and charity, the same religion that says 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.' How do they reconcile that?

I realize that major changes do not happen overnight. Nobody ever said they do. But it's absurd that you would rather somebody stop their bitching than critique and actually try to be the change they wish to see in the world. It says a lot about you.
