The Fran and Dave Experiment

I wanted to chuck it all and live off the land, but how to do that without money? Then it hit me: Work in a respectable office job 8-5, and live in a tent in the West Virginia woods after hours. Could I really get away with it? Could it really be that easy? Stay tuned!

Dave Carvell is looking for writing gigs. If you like my writing, contact me please.

We finally managed to pitch the tent in the Great State of Florida in the Ocala National Forest. It is a wonderful place for many reasons, not the least of which is that it feels like spring-time here.

Our first night in Florida was spent at a hotel because we were too tired after all the driving to set up camp. It was nice to be greeted by the sounds of frogs while West Virginia is experiencing freezing weather.

We would have been here sooner, but we visited Fran's son at Shaw Airforce Base in South Carolina and suffered a setback. Fran lost her glasses through no fault of her own. I'll spare you the details.

We have been exploring the National Forest all afternoon and it reminds me of a jungle. Maybe it is - I'm no expert. We saw a couple of egrets by the road - or at least things that resemble egrets. We also got to see some things that might be cockroaches but are bigger than the one's I've seen before - not that I'm overly used to them.

Yesterday had beautiful weather but today it's raining. That's okay; it's still nice and warm.

I've taken a lot of pictures and will post them as soon as I can.

(I'm sorry if this is somewhat disjointed, but I'm at the library at Silver Springs, and on a timer.)

SEEN ANY MONKEYS?

MY HUSBAND LIVED DOWN THERE FOR AWHILE, MANY YEARS AGO, AND SAID THE FORREST WAS FULL OF THEM- BECAUSE OF SOME THAT ESCAPED WHEN TARZAN WAS FILMED THERE.

It's off of 436 in Altamonte/ apopka, road to turn on is across Street from Albertson's .

Hey Dave & Fran! Those little buggers are Palmetto bugs and they're a pain in the astabula! You know you're in Florida when you see those.
Make some friends and invite them for dinner! My guess is you won't have to invite them ~ they're just like in-laws, they just show up unannounced ans want to stay! Enjoy! ;)

I saw a palmetto bug in a Memphis motel and ran straight out of the room only half dressed. Didn't know what it was at the time but it didn't matter. Would have run anyway. Those things are huge and fast.

My very first time driving into Florida we had just passed a sign for the Welcome Center where they were giving out free glasses of orange juice to visitors. Of course, we planned to stop until we saw the large rattesnake in the middle of the road.
Kept driving ~ wasn't that thirsty!

I camped in the Ocala Natl. Forest for two weeks a loooong time ago. I was a very inexperienced camper at the time and it was a little too much "roughing it" for me at the time. Still, I remember the three rules everyone told me about the place. After a rain, watch out for rattlesnakes because they all come out of their holes then, in the morning shake your shoes before putting them on to make sure there's no scorpions in them, and eat lots of raw garlic to keep the ticks off. My first night there, I woke up with 17 ticks on me.
After that, the garlic did the trick!

Enjoy the warmth!

Ahhh to be in Florida....Unlike freezing with ice everywhere in Ky....Hey ...before I forget there is an alligator park at the first rest area when you cross into Florida...They have the actual alligator from Tarzan...(Johnny weismueller days)...and a really old guy who will scare the graham crackers out of you poking a stick at the big alligators...always a good laugh there...
