Current mood:  argumentative
Category: Religion and Philosophy
I belong to a debate forum or two, and I spend a lot of time there, "venting" about the state of the world.
The question came up:

"Why do some secularists feel the need to try to eradicate every semblance of religion from the metaphoric public square? Yet another religion-bashing thread!"

My response:

Excuse me, who's a secularist? I prefaced my piece by saying that I was 'raised in the church".....I sang mass 5 days out of 7, on average, for 3 years (while attending The Anglican Choir School for Boys, in Chicago) . Hardly "secular".

And it is not "yet another religion-bashing thread".....it's a "when your practicing of your religion infringes on my life and world"-bashing thread.
"Religion" has taken on new meaning. It's become a "bad word", if not, a maligned philosophy.

The Pilgrims (Puritans) fled England so that they could further their cause, the practice of their "reformed version of The Church of England", far from the influence and machinations of King Charles I....
Before them, Henry VIII established the Church of England, as a way to get around the interference of Rome, in his quest for a male heir, at any cost, which meant annulling his first marriage, to Catherine of Aragon; finding his second wife, Anne Boleyn, guilty of adultery and having her beheaded....in essence, religion has long been about "politics". Nowadays is no exception.
Except "religious freedom" has now, ironically, come to include "religious interference"......add politics to that, and you get "a hot mess".

The Falwells and Robertsons of the world have their own particular view of religion and its' place in society. Where they fail is providing that everyone should share their view, and if not, then they are "maligned", in fact, "scripturally". Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. "Freedom, of religion" is, in fact, "turned on its' head". Where's the freedom? Where is the tolerance for the beliefs of others, especially "non-Christians"? Hell, where is the tolerance for the beliefs of other Christians? Didn't Hagee call the Roman Catholic Church, "the great whore"??? All these demagogues and false prophets, share commonalities. They've lost focus. They've lost clarity (if they ever had it)
They've lost the precepts of their beliefs...and now believe something entirely different, and "dark"...."self-importance", in the grand scheme of things.
Reverend Wright is right in there with them. A victim of his own folly. ( And, yes, I said it) The messenger went off message, and became the message.
Sounds a lot like Washington, to me...anybody else see the parallels?

Look, no one is "blasting" anyone's religion or religious beliefs, or lack thereof...and shouldn't be.
The thing is Christianity is but one religion in a sea of many. If Christ, himself, taught tolerance, love, and acceptance of all peoples...where do these demagogues get off criticizing, lambasting, and preaching against other people and their religious beliefs? Agendi. Politics. Self-importance.
Religion is not religion, anymore...it's a commodity...like "oil futures", to be bought and sold, for gain, or influence. But it's lost its' flavor and favor.....like Pepsodent. Anybody still using it?
Bill

Before I comment on this, I will say two things. Number one is, I am grateful for the kindness you have shown me and I feel a great warmth and affection for you. Number two is, don't make fun of my toothpaste.

My comment on this magnificently written blog is an opinionated observation. I believe there are people in this world who feel a need to control others, and religion is a tool for them to do that. A hammer is a tool that can be applied to the head of a nail or to the head of a human. The hammer is neither good nor bad. A religion is a belief system; there is nothing tangible about it. I have all due respect for the hammer, but not for those who choose to use it as a weapon.

The real ill in religion is its structure and limited interpretation of what others read and believe. The Creator is bigger than a book or one school of thought. Religion attempts to control the thoughts of others where Spirituality is a personal relation to the Creator. A space that allows each individual to connect tothe Christ awareness.

Christ means to be anointed and therefore is not a name. Even the one called the Christ pointed to the concept and not himself. That is what human hands did and somewhere in that belief try to hold the world hostage to that concept.

Freddom is the space where we all have the right to define our beliefs for ourselves and allow the same to all that IT created

You make a great point Aaron, and so did Bill for Pres. I agree with what he said. I also feel that religion was created to control the masses, to make everyone the same, to squash individuality and uniqueness. We are created in God's image, but does that mean we are all the same person? No more than every tree is the same. I think the beauty of humanity is that we ARE all different...how boring it would be otherwise...we would be no better than robots, which I think would make a lot of "preachers" very happy, as long as you are sure to pay your tithes! (I used to be married to a "pentecostal" preacher...I know these circles very well, and they're scary!).

The right wingers/republicans have turned religion/christianity into viable polling percentages, all the while making fun of them behind their backs, after they get their vote. I am sick of all of the "preachers" who have grabbed headlines away from the real issues of this election...change, hunger, poverty, global warming, gas prices, recession rarely are discussed...but we know what every nut job in a pulpit is saying about this candidate, or that candidate. I think our forefathers were wise to separate church and state! I do think it has been this hijacking of christianity by the right that has given a lot of people a bad taste about religion...

BTW...no Pepsodent for me...I like "Kiss My Face" organic toothpaste! LOL!

Great post!

I used to STAY in trouble for asking questions such as these, as a child.
(....AND still, as an adult. *lol*)

HolyRollaz have always made me sick: and even after my own near-death experience, I'm even MORE certain that they are closest to Hell than most...But I'm not any more interested in opening their eyes than I ever have been. I'd just as soon have them learn it the hard way.

PS: Pepsodent's always been too grimey & winter-greeney to me,
but I'm still hanging on to CloseUp gel paste though. *heheh*

Tab,
So good to hear from you.
And so right...I have such a hard time "steering my own boat", I can't be distracted by the canoes or luxury liners of others, 'cuz "the waters" are treacherous. I love what is alluded to in the Desiderata....."I'm not here to please you, and you're not here to please me, but if we find (common ground) each other, it is a beautiful thing.
I'm glad I found ya. Aaron

Uh Oh!! Here is where I show my lack of intelligence. Aaron you know so much more about Britain's history than I do, ignorance is NOT bliss I can assure you. All I know about Henry VIII, I learned from watching movies (sad huh?). I was brought up a Christian by my parents/church and school - Church of Scotland or Protestant faith as we were called. It's all I knew and it was all good and well. However, I agree that some individuals USE religion to their own ends and that is NOT something I agree with. I'm all for open debate and discussion, and agreeing to disagree on many things, we can't all feel exactly the same way or believe exactly the same things. I choose to believe in God and Heaven, because any other alternatives leave me confused and unhappy. I WANT TO BELIEVE that when I die I shall be accepted into the Kingdom of God and will once again be reunited with my loved ones. However, I also believe that if I have not pleased God by the life I have lead, he will place me back on earth to have another try at leading a good life. We do say things like, when I fall down, Our Father will pick me up and carry me again (poem, Footprints In The Sand) - and so I think this way. He will pick me up at the end of my life and either take me home, or set me back down here again. Does that sound completely crazy? No, I don't think so. Meanwhile, I respect every faith practised around the world. I don't always agree with them, but I do respect them. I love every human being on this planet and wish him/her well on their journey through life. Those who I come across as unpleasant, I move away from them and their path, but wish them well anyway. Life is not ALWAYS this simple, but when I am in a difficult situation, it helps to over-simplify in this way.

Peace, Love and Happiness to EVERYONE. A special helping for my friend Aaron xx

Just for the record, I use whichever toothpaste I can afford at the time LOL!!! K xx

Kitty,
You know I love you....it's people like you that let me know that God does, indeed, exists, and we are his instruments, here on Earth. I'm so happy to have such a friend, albeit, "across the pond"...so far away, yet so near to my heart. Aaron
