Welcome to the official announcement for Issue #3 of Down The Rabbit Hole-Adam's Picks (and other assorted crap).

This issue took a little longer to get out than usual because we're smack dab in the middle of mixing the new album and my head about a million miles out in space right now. I've been wanting to write an update about everything that's going on with the band (because it's all pretty exciting) but between mixing what is essentially two totally different (if intertwined) albums at the same time and trying to get this magazine done, I just haven't had the free head space for it. Once we put this out today, I'll have a little more breathing room and I'll sit down and write you a little bit about everything.

This is an abbreviated issue. It's just music and movies. That said, it's still pretty cool and (honestly), it's not really abbreviated at all. The MUSIC section is entirely dedicated to my favorite songwriter Stew and his bands The Negro Problem and Stew. It's basically an album-by-album overview of their entire career and recorded output. It was a real labor of love for me to write about them and, as a special bonus, we asked their permission and embedded about 15 songs from all the albums so you can actually just push play and hear full versions of some of the songs I'm talking about. Maybe you'll understand why I love them so much. Let me just warn you that these can be a little hinky on Safari. They definitely work fine on Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox and they're working fine right now on my Safari but they don't always so if you have problems, just switch browsers.

Other than that, I write about one of my all-time favorite movies, Laura, and talk about Clint Eastwood some because there are some great ridiculously inexpensive deals on Eastwood Box Sets out there right now. I also tried to talk about a couple really cool Jesse James outlaw movies but I got so far off the subject that I wrote a two or three pages on sequels in general and James Cameron movies and 80's horror movies before I remembered what the hell I was doing and got back to the James movies.

Anyway, I'll keep this brief. I had a sort of crappy personal night life. I took a risk and ended up basically humiliating myself and looking like a total asshole in the process. Some days it's just not worth getting out of bed. Oh well, tomorrow is another day. Come take a trip down the Rabbit Hole and check out all the stuff that makes my life worth living. I'm listening to Stew right now and you know, even as bad as tonight was, I still got friends who make beautiful music. How bad can the world really be when you got friends like that?

This one's dedicated to Heidi and Stew for making the music that makes my life better every time I hear it and to Bill Allerton and Bill Forsyth for keeping the music of so many great bands alive all by themselves by running the two greatest record stores in the world out of one little closet of a shop in London. Nobody will ever know how much we owe it all to you.

So come on. Take a trip. Let's go...

"looking" like an asshole is pretty hard, how did you do it? Did somebody bust your bubble huh? huh? Damn I'd give you a bunny hug if I could. T

Sorry to hear you had such a bad night. At least you can say you took the risk, it didn't work out, and ya learned from it. pfffft....sweep it under the rug. You're only human.

Anyway, thanks again for sharing your personal thoughts. I'm on my way now to the rabbit hole. So hold my phone calls....I'm sure I'll be there for quite a long time. :)

peace and much love,
j

"The comes the piano and string section epiphany of “Ordinary Love”. I want to tell you what it’s about but I don’t know. I just know it’s beautiful and I just feel something about the heartbreaking hopelessness of holding onto love even as it inevitably becomes somehow MORE ordinary and LESS extraordinary every day. It’s about about the struggle you go though to try to understand your slipping interest and get a grip on it before you lose hold of something which might mean the world to you and certainly once did."

...Wow...you make me want to hear this song. This description is beautiful...

Good stuff! Thanks for taking the time to write this. My brother and I have always LOVED Clint Eastwood. However, my brother has taken it to the extreme and has framed movie stills (some of them signed) all over his house. He also goes around quoting the movies all the time, which cracks me up.

I am also loving The Negro Problem/Stew stuff. I can definitely see why you admire it so much and how it influences you and keeps you stable. Of course, so many of us feel that way about your music. Your lyrics have always been #1 with me...along with The Beatles, John Denver, etc. I have always wondered what you think of John Denver's lyrics. I am definitely ragged on for liking JD, but I don't care. People who only know his "popular" songs, and not his full collection, just don't get it. I guess there will always be people who don't get it anyway. I love to hear from other people who are sustained in the crazy day-today world by music/lyrics. That is definitely me.

Hang in there about the personal stuff. We all make asses out of ourselves. Most of the time we beat ourselves up over it long after it has been forgotten by everyone else. Everything will work out at some point. Hey, I still love you! :-) "But we only stay in orbit
for a moment of time...And then you're everybody's satellite...I wish that you were mine."
Much Love,
Sharon

Ha! You said "hinky," which is a word that is sorely underused these days. Love it!

Adam,
I always value your opinion in reference to music and movies, so I'll definately have to listen to your friends, The Negro Problem!!
I'm sorry to hear (or should I say READ) that you had a shitty night...but, we've all been there before. Honestly, I can't imagine you looking like an "asshole". Although at the moment it happens it sucks, I have found that in small doses, humiliation keeps me grounded and humble.
Here's to a better day...

Here's to Stew And Heidi....thanks to you I saw Passing Strange and loved it. They are in fact mighty talented. Let your shitty night go...I'm sure they'll be others that will be much more then you'd expect. I saw someone mention John Denver in a previous post. I recently heard, tapped my feet, and snappy my fingers to "Country road....take me hoooooooooooome to the placcccccccccce I beloooooooooooooooong west virginaaaaaa Mountain Momma...take me home...country road..."

RIP John Denver...and this comin' from a city girl!

xoxox kisses to u Ad!

A great place to find music if you are ever in the Salem, Oregon area is Ranch Records. They have great people who work there and will turn you on to stuff you may have never heard of. Issue 3 is good. Keep it up.- Amy

Yeah, I see what you mean, Adam. With mixing going on, you barely managed to eek out a few paragraphs there.

A) You're a great lead singer in a hugely succesful band, but you're an even better fanboy. My God, that Negro Problem/Stew write up was like something out of Mojo magazine. Great band, great description and even greater enthusiasm. I'll be digging those CDs 0ut tonight for sure.

B) You're the coolest for providing links to the songs on iTunes.

Good luck with the mixing; pan that maracca, compress that kick drum, EQ that harpsichord flourish!

Adam I am certain whatever you feel you may have done in your personal life, you've just let it play on your mind and made it seem a lot worse than it is, I'm sure by this time next week it will all be forgotten...don't be so hard on yourself you are after all only human.. and just remember..

"Humility is the only true wisdom by which we prepare our minds for all the possible changes of life.”

"Humility makes great men twice honorable”

another great issue...thanks

stay safe and stay happy

I've been a fan of Stew and The Negro Problem since I heard Joys and Concerns my freshman year of college. I just finished reading your article, very well written. I really enjoyed reading your interpretations of the songs and the lyrics. The comparison to the Beatles...first I had heard that but it is true. Makes sense too, knowing now that Stew grew up listening to them. He is a very talented songwriter, it is true. I wish he'd get in the studio and release a new album..perhaps you could convince him? hah. I think you sang Bleed beautifully. :0)
