Who Gives Kudos:

Monday, August 31, 2009
So you're interested in becoming a voice actor. You've taken some theater in school or gotten some acting experience under your belt. You've cobbled together a first attempt at a demo, or are on the verge of making one. Now you're looking to get a professional opinion and are seeking some helpful direction and advice. I'm happy to announce a new service aimed at entry level voice actors.

Starting today, you can sign up for a private one-on-one hour long session with me via Skype (free voice/video chat program at www.skype.com). I will critique and deconstruct your commercial and/or animation demo. Even if you don't have a demo, you can still get a professional opinion on your performance as you read through sample scripts. I've worked in radio, commercials, audio books, video games, and animation for over a decade collectively. Given my experience in the field, I will give you an honest evaluation and help you focus on your signature strengths.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER:
-If you've got a speech impediment or thick regional accent, this is not for you. You'll need a speech therapist or dialect coach.  If you have difficulty reading or reading aloud...sorry, I can't help you.

-If you do a great impression of "insert character name here", this is not for you. Impressions are just imitations...not acting. If you have a demo littered with Family Guy, etc, you will NOT get work. All those roles are cast. Impressions say nothing about your acting ability. You'll need to create and sustain a believable performance. While sound-a-likes and voice matching are a viable form of voice work, that is not the focus of my private sessions.

-If you think I am offering a quick "in" to the industry, this is not for you. There is absolutely no guarantee of work, signing with an agent, etc no matter who you study with. I am not casting projects, on a talent search, or in the business of demo production. There are many others with various areas of expertise in voice over. I will be happy to assist in recommending other resources depending on your desire or focus, as part of your evaluation and guidance.

SO HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
My base price per hour session is $75. This is roughly half the average cost of a private session in voice over training. HOWEVER, if you are one of the first five to sign up, you'll get a promotional price of $50 (good for a follow up session at the same rate). Payment is expected in advance via Paypal.    Cancellations or rescheduling will be dealt with on an individual basis. There is no high pressure to buy multiple sessions, nor a minimum amount expected. No strings attached. Seriously.

WHAT WILL I NEED FOR OUR SKYPE SESSION?
Its preferable if you already have some recorded samples of commercials or animation scripts. Even if you don't have some form of demo already, I am requesting you to do a little homework in advance. Google search for sample scripts or transcribe some radio/tv commercials (even read off a magazine ad) and have these either linkable for our session or email in advance. I will have some audition scripts on hand as well.   Its also essential for you to hear how a demo should sound. I find the best resource to hear commercial and animation demos is Voicebank.net. Please take the time to click thru a half dozen or so demos before our session. Obviously search within your gender and see if you can find a similar age range/sound.

OK....THIS SOUNDS COOL, WHAT DO I DO NOW?
Email me with further questions or if you're ready to sign up and schedule a session: kylevox@gmail.com

Although I'm not interested in getting into the voice acting industry myself, I do wish you all the best, Kyle.  :)  I think this is a FANTASTIC idea! ^^ Why didn't we think of this before? lol

I think I'll give this a whirl. By the way, will you be holding this consultation session for only this month?

I was the first person to go through a session with Kyle this past week, and I have to say it's well worth it!! I enjoyed it a lot and honor and value Kyle's opinion on voicework as I'm learning about how to read for this kind of thing and one day put together a demo when I'm closer to moving to LA.

Hey there dude! Missed you at San-japan but this sounds like an awesome idea. I wish very much I could take you up on this but due to mothers recent health problems I am having to monitor my spending for a while. However if I can schedule with you later in the winter I'll be all for it!
