quinta-feira, maio 14, 2009

so it's 11:56 on wednesday night... day three of the fast. I'm planning on breaking my fast at midnight.

I've just received word that the sudanese forces carried out a bombing raid on North Darfur today. And then this: In an IDP camp in west Darfur they ran out of water completely. I feel tremendously sad. Frustrated by the injustices and and feeling ridiculously small in the face of it all.

Tonight I pass the baton to a hero of mine, peter gabriel who be fasting for the next three days. It's a sobering thought, the luxury of being able to go back to food and while millions cannot.

I might be an idealist. I might not have a political mind. But I do know that something is off.

And I take a look at a nation of excess, (including my own) and I wonder why we as a nation aren't involved in what many are calling the paramount international human-rights crisis -- the Darfur genocide. Speaking of Darfur during his campaign,  Obama said: "As president of the United States, I don't intend to abandon people." Yet he is. About genocide,  he said,  "We can't say 'never again' and allow it to happen again." But it is happening again.

With the U.S. budget deficit on track to rise to a record setting 1.84 trillion dollars in the current fiscal year, we remain uncommitted to Darfur. As a nation we are literally living on borrowed money, borrowing from the future to pay for the present.  And yet, the staggering loss of human life in Darfur is not on our national priority list. With our budget we are declaring what is most important to our nation. In our excess we are abandoning Darfur.

Mother Theresa said this: "It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish." I am so convicted by her words.

I want to be a part of the solution. I want to laugh with those who laugh, weep with those who weep, and suffer with those who suffer. I have lost much of my childlike faith in the government, but I have a hope for justice still. Maybe God alone can bring about final justice, but in this life I feel we are called to pursue it with our flesh and blood. If Christ was best known for his death, "laying down his life for his friends" then shouldn't his followers do likewise? serving and loving those in need? These are not things I can do on my own. I need your help. we all need a community to thrive in, to challenge us... to threaten us with abundant living.

This is our world. It's what you and me and the millions of other souls on our planet make it. This is your darfur, my darfur... Our chance to act or pretend that we don't care. Whatever your personal religious convictions may be, the tragedy in Darfur is impossible to ignore.

Dear Jon:

When you started this fast I gave it some short passing thoughts. I kind of felt like, "hey thats great for him but what good would it do for me to do this" With your fame and popularity, doing something such as this is good for reaching and motivating but I felt that for me-theres was nothing I could do. This last blog is the only thing that caught my attention. I don't know why, but I'd like to think it's God speaking to me. I've always felt like there will never be anyway for me to help others without putting out money which I don't have. I've forgotten the most important part of it all which is prayer. I, like many others, get caught up in my own world and my prayers are always made for myself and my loved ones. These few blogs of yours have sort of put things into prespective for me. I need to think more of others and the things I can do for them. I have a friend that is a youth pastor in Connecticut and him and his youth doing a 30 hour famine once a month or so. He says it's not eating so others can. I've never understood how just by not eating can help someone else eat unless I'm sending them the food I'm not eating. Now I get it though. God provides me with food everyday. I've never went hungry unless it was on purpose. I need to thank God for providing for me and ask that he take it and give it to someone else that needs it more. I've never fasted before. I've never even considered fasting. I don't even really know much about it but it's something I intend on studying and following through on. I want to thank you Jon Foreman. Your 3 day fast has helped others. I know God has seen your efforts and you will be rewarded well for it. I wish there were others out there like you. The world wouldn't be such a bad place if there were.

How can I possibly help with this, being outside the US? Is there a trustworthy organisation I can give to that is actively pursuing justice in Darfur?

I tried clicking on the links of the news stories you posted here but it keeps sending me back to MySpace home page. I don't know if that's just my computer though.

Jon, I thank you so much for putting light on this issue and for sharing your thoughts with us. It's sure convicted me. And makes me unsettled. Which is something I think we all need sometimes. If we're always smiling and going fast through life turning our backs on the dark and injust things, how can we be like the body of Christ? When one part of the body is in pain, the rest feels it.

You know I was thinking. In world war II with the holocaust, it didn't end until the US stepped in and got involved. Truly involved. As in sent people over who meant business. I'm thinking unless something similar happens now, it may be a while before this genocide ends.

May God bless you and the people of Darfur

the people in power simply do not care, i am really startingto think they allow this, and all the horrible killing on purpose, to reduce the population, just listen to them (ie: al gore) and all the other fabian socailists...what better way to reduce the population of earth and have their global socialist agenda come to fruition...its the spirit of anti-christ

please dont forget about the holocaust here in america (abortion) as well...why should people have to choose just one cause that ends murder and human suffering, to many people in to many places are dying and being mistreated
we might not want to beleive it, but something like Darfur could happen here next, which group of people would they select, Christians, Jews, whatever....
history continues to repeat itself....
maybe we should have LIFE Parties instead of TEA Parties!

Wow. I am so struck by the quote from Mother Theresa. And it brings me on another subject..
I completely agree with your distaste for Obama's neutrality toward the Darfur crisis. We have so much wealth here that it's very much a shame. But while Obama doesn't give aid to the people of Darfur, I am struck by another genocide that doesn't get much attention either.
I am always wondering.. Why doesn't abortion get attention? I can name so many actors, musicians, and public figures that speak out against the horrible conditions of Darfur or other such situations. Why are we so silent on abortion? It's here among us. What can we do to stop it?
