Current mood:  miserable
Category: Music
When someone sent me an email about Michael Jackson’s passing this afternoon, I thought it was a stupid joke. “MJ couldn’t die,” – I thought. And so strong was my conviction that the illustrious Michael Jackson was beyond something as commonplace as death that I didn’t believe it even when I saw it plastered on the front page of Yahoo!

Now that it is finally starting to sink in, I feel strange and empty, like I have suffered a great personal loss. Sure, the Sony/BMG people can talk about his “contribution to the culture” and “artistry and magnetism”, but somehow those words bear no correlation to what Mr. Jackson meant to me. And he meant a great deal.

A lot of artists list MJ as one of their main influences – and there is no denying that his work has had a huge impact on what we know as the today’s popular music. But to me he was always more then just a musical idol. It seems as though he has had a hand in two of my most important life decisions so far. One was choosing to become a musician, despite my mother’s attempts to get me into business school. The other was – getting married.

As a teenager I ran a website about my music which had had a whole page dedicated to my raves about Michael Jackson. My husband Brad saw the site and was seized with a sudden desire to give the gem of his celebrity signature collection – a sheet music book of MJ’s songs, signed by him – as a gift to me. We met up… and a year later I was moving to the US and getting married to Brad.

It feels so strange to think that he’s gone now… and it hurts quite a lot knowing that he will never be able to hear me sing… I had always cherished a hope for that.

Anyway, here is a video of me singing a shortened version of MJ’s “You’re Not Alone”. I hope you enjoy it; if you do, please take a few moments to forward it to those of your friends who care about Michael.

Alina, I am very very saddened. Michael's music played a part as bringing us together as friends. I listened to him since I was in the womb until now. I cried when I heard the news.. I can't bring myself to watch the videos on VH1.. Michael was our hero, nothing could prepare us for this. I feel the same loss, MJ was like our long lost cousin. He went everywhere with us, his music was there in our happy and sad times. I pray u are holding up well, Love ya friend! XO

I know exactly how you feel. EXACTLY! I can't watch or read anything about it, I just get this lump in my throat... But people keep sending me articles and stuff about him like it's gonna cheer me up...

Hey Lovely Alina,

And when it popped up in my email, (It was in a Subject Line), I was a bit like you, not really believing it.  But I did immediately send it to you, Barb, Judy, Betty and Michele, thinking all the while, you and Barb would be truly devestated if it was true.  (Well, like you, it only took a few more minutes to see it going up every where on the web)...

I know personally how greatly you are affected Lady...

Both you and your husband and I was asked to write a poem, but I think it would be more fitting if you gave me permission to share your words and your tribute song here on the SOP.

Do let me know and I agree, the loss music has suffered is unmeasurable but MJ wasn't just an incredible talent, that's music transcended all age barriers and races, and cultures...

He was more than words can say...

Heart hugs to you

Chase Von

Yeah I know Chase. It was your email I was actually referring to. I was like: "Someone must have been playing a prank on Chase".

Dear Alina,

This is such a beautiful tribute song for Michael,  it touched my heart so deelply. God Bless You and God bless Michael I have always loved Michael and his music in fact, he was my favorite dancer too and I tried to copy some of his moves twirling around etc. It is such a sad day for the world with such a tragic and great loss. His memory and music will live on forever. Good night Michael rest in peace with our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.  You will always have a special place in my heart.
Love
Donna

Alina, I found out via text messaging on my cell phone. I was shocked. I stayed in shock for several hours. Micheal Jackson was very excentric, however his music was incredible and a huge part of the culture of my life for at least a decade. It is very sad to see that he has passed, but I refuse to indulge in watching the constant media attention about him now. Suddenly everyone was his very best buddy if there is a camera near by. Mel

Yeah, the media is usually disgusting with these kind of things. It's good that the people that are gone can't see any of it.

thank you very much for this video alina.... I still can..t believe that he is gone.

THE KING OF POP he will always be and we should all remember him as a fabulous artist. Listen to those songs, like "childhood", "smile" or "earthsong".... open your ears and hearts maybe he can reach NOW all of us everytime we hear his voice...

I hope he gets his freedom now and I hope he will smile, when we listen to his music.... for me he is unforgettable...

Thanks Alexandra! I know I'll always remember him for his music, not all the junk that the media wrote about him. He was first and foremost a great, great artist.

Yeah, he was. It's almost as bad as losing someone you know personally, because I had a personal connection with his music.

what it be??? when i look at an artist on myspace (99.99) percent of the time i hear, 1) weak diaphragm 2) vocals sound sleepy-not warmed up 3) the lazy sound 4) won't sell concert tickets.

alina has a lot of the qualitys that m. jackson has, which is the opposite of your average myspace pop vocalist.
