Current mood:alive
I am home right now, sitting in my chair like I always do. I logged on (like I always do) and read a bulletin from Afrika Bambaataa. It's one of maintaining peace and balance by rising up as community that loves (and has been raised on) Hip Hop and it's culture. A message that we should insist that the radio and TV put more realistic depictions of the culture, and not just gangsters, pimps, hoes and the like. It's quite an ironic bulletin to read right now, seeing that I had to cross under yellow police tape in order to walk up my driveway. I had to park a block away because the street is blocked off by cop cars. As I walked closer to my house, it seemed that everyone is out on their front lawn. The older chinese man who spends all day in his garden and gives my neighbor josh his eggplants, The mexican family that has doubled over the holiday weekend with kids skateboarding and uncles laughing, the mongolian-looking guy across the street with the nasty cough that wakes up at dawn every morning to start his old truck... they are all talking amongst themselves, and staring at my yard. The mexican family that has been so joyful all weekend, are all crying and hugging. As I walked past them, slowly towards my place, (directly across the street from the pre-school), I asked them what happened and the oldest woman catches her breathe just enough to tell me "there has been a terrible tragedy". Right now as I write this, there is a dead body in the street, 30 feet away from me, covered in a white sheet next to a pickup truck with one door open. Ghetto birds flying overhead, beaming down on my house like it's opening night of some hollywood nightclub. But these crowds gather for an ending, instead. I feel the need to correlate this reality of death that I am feeling, with the message that Bambaataa has sent out into the Universe. It's time to hold ourselves responsible for the effects of our media. The most shocking thing about my present state, is that I'm not shocked at all. I've seen a million homocide shows... and there's the tall, staunch detective that's in all the movies. This is all too familiar. I only ask you to WANT to help, and with this SINCERE WILLINGNESS will arise the ways and means to do so. Look for ways, and they'll surface. Hold hope and community tight, and solidarity will begin to take shape. Leaders will suddenly realize that they must lead. They will lead by following the will of the masses, like a true and righteous leader should. bleshyall... I will meet you on the front lines, you have my word. (the rest of this blog will be the pure love written by Afrika Bambaataa, of the Universal Zulu Nation) -------------------------------------------------------- This is not just a Zulu thang...its a PEOPLE thing! I'm right there in the front line with you, brother. We will be strong and courageous soul-jahs in this Conscious Army. We can't really help the misfortunes that happen around the world sometimes. The only way we CAN help is by changing our minds and our souls--toward the greater good--towards the Light. For "no man can benefit the world who isn't a benefit to himself first." When we raise the consciousness and awareness in our own lives, our own worlds, we can then touch and save souls---and those souls will illuminate other souls...and so on...and so on...

Keep up the good fight. I am so blessed to be on the same side as you. Namaste...

One life, One world, One people, ONE LOVE,

~Kristina Joy Gutierrez~

Sweet Sweet Jeremy, I am sorry that you had such a heavy evening...I am sorrier even still that you were not shocked by what you have seen... What a crazy fucked up world we live in. Where murder doesn't even terrify us?  That fact alone is enough to keep me sad forever. But I will try and fight the numb and continue to feel as much as I can, believing at long last that it is always better to be an empath then empty. As alchemists of love and lessons we must look for the pretty in the pain around us and turn it into something beautiful. We will battle with our paint brushes, our records, our microphones and pens. There is good work to be done, my friend, and we are just the folks to do it. We all share the same brave path. Jeremy, I walk beside you into the fire. I take your hand and jump.

In the constant fight against the caging of his people Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe was said to say: We live, we die, and like the grass and trees, renew ourselves from the soft clods of the grave. Stones crumble and decay, faiths grow old and they are forgotten but new beliefs are born. The faith of the villages is dust now...but it will grow again....like the trees. May serenity circle on silent wings and catch the whisper of the winds."

Sup Sol -It's crazy how a tragedy can put things into perspective. And there is a death going on with hip hop right now on the radio...and wurd up to Afrika Bambaata for the awareness, Rock Steay represent....but I don't see a solution in his blog.

The question is how do we take action against the monopolies -the Clear Channels and the Journal Broadcasters of the world? We can bark at the djs all we want about being sell-outs (yadayada) but in the end they aren't really the decision makers of the audio flow in the bigger picture. It's the producers that we have to get at -whether we start soliciting them to be apart of our collectives or petitioning the FCC or what? These label companies go hand in hand with what gets rotation and so if they are all in bed together then we have to work our way at changing their perception of what they consider hip hop vs. rap.

And as conscious people, we have to change our own conditioning and ideology that lets us accept and put up with the degration of women, the propaganda of genocide and the lack of awareness of how this is affecting this next generation. They may be growing up with Mos and Talib and Common and Saul -but do they know about Afrika or Nina etc. We have to start passing this knowledge of music down so we create heads that want to hear good shit rather than the typical airp play and create that "marekt demand." WE have to plant those seeds, commit as a hip hop community to create more conscious music or it will be to our own demise.
