Space Junky played to a packed house Saturday night at the Ginsberg Art Gallery. The show was a benefit for the gallery and concluded with an art auction and fireworks display.
This was my first opportunity to see the band perform a full live show. I'd been a fan since catching their last song at a neighbor's wedding a few weeks back. I liked the catchy pop rock tunes that I heard on the Space Junky MySpace page. But it wasn't until I went to their website at spacejunky.com and heard their song "I Am What I Am" that I fell in love with the band.
"I Am What I Am" is dedicated to those of us who live out our lives in SL. Like Space Junky's other tunes, it is skillfully executed and slickly produced. In addition, the poignant lyrics touch a sensitive spot and evoke those familiar feelings one feels when meeting new souls in SL and the internal debate over whether to offer your friendship… and the question of whether that offer will be accepted.
I want to take you to a perfect world
Where you could be you and I could be me
To a galaxy where no lies are told
And you could be and I could be
What I am
Shakti Cianci is the frontwoman of the band and its driving force. She writes and sings the songs, sometimes while playing keyboards. She is backed by Zaphod Rahja on guitar and Zavier Corleone on drums.
I talked with Shakti a couple of days before the show. We met through an interesting synchronicity. My land is named "Temple of Love" -- after the temple I built there. Space Junky does a song entitled "Temple of Love" and their video by that name uses footage of Shakti's own RL trip to Tibet. The video shows scenes of Tibetan monks and their own Temple of Love.
We met for the first time when I TP'd Shakti to my "Temple of Love":

I recognized some of the songs performed at their show from their MySpace page. "Gravitational Pull" is a rocking love song. "Out There" is an attempt to make contact with those friendly aliens out there who helped us kick-start our civilization thousands of years ago. "Are you out there?"
I especially liked a new one, "Killer Coat," about a girl like me out on a shopping spree.
Space Junky will be performing regularly on the Ginsberg Art Gallery roof every Saturday night at 11:00 pm Linden Time (PDT). Come and Space Out with me and Shakti and the boys!
