Romance Author Beverly Jenkins at Book Beat    ........

The Book Beat is pleased to announce that local author Beverly Jenkins will be reading and signing her latest book BRING ON THE BLESSINGS at the Book Beat on Thursday, March 12th, from 7:00 - 8:30 PM. The Book Beat is located at 26010 Greenfield, Oak Park, MI.  Please call 248-968-1190 for more information.

"Even when writing a contemporary, Beverly Jenkins always provides her audience with a fascinating look at African-American history; this time with the return to Henry Adams (see SOMETHING LIKE LOVE). The story line is fast-paced from the moment that Bernadine begins to format her project and never slows down as the tidbits of historical information are interwoven into the strong contemporary plot. Fans will enjoy this delightful tale and want sequels; those who have not read this great author are missing a treat." --Harriet Klausner, Genre-Go Round Reviews

"Beverly Jenkins charms... with this heartwarming story of love, community, and family... a tasty reading confection that you’ll savor long after the story ends.”  --Angela Benson, author of Up Pops the Devil

"Beverly Jenkins has a way of giving you goose bumps. Sure, her novels are moving, whether they're historical love stories told in post–Civil War settings, or sizzling contemporaries set in the high-powered world of pro sports. But more than that, she's got a way of connecting us with the characters and subjects she writes about that's simply unforgettable." -- Romance By the Book

David Sedaris (born December 26, 1956) is a Grammy Award-nominated American humorist, writer, comedian, detective, bestselling author, and radio contributor.  His books have sold over 7 million copies and include the collections; Barrel Fever, Me Talk Pretty, Naked, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and his latest collection; When You Are Engulfed in Flames. sedaris_236-0David Sedaris may well be the closest thing the literary world has these days to a rock star, his speaking engagements are now consistently standing-room-only, a far cry from his early days as a housecleaner in New York City. Sedaris made his comic debut recounting his strange-but-true experiences of his job as a Macys elf clad in green tights, reading his SantaLand Diaries on National Public Radios Morning Edition. His sardonic wit and incisive social critique have since made him one of Americas pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which Sedaris slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. Listen to a selection of NPR David Sedaris specials, and guest commentaries.

Book Beat Reading Group Meets Wednesday, March 25th
........

Our next meeting is Wednesday, March 25th, at 7 PM. We will be discussing the mini-masterpiece Jakob Van Gunten by Robert Wallser. Our reading group meets at the Goldfish Teahouse in Royal Oak. This discussion group is free and open to the public. Reading group books are discounted 15% at the Book Beat.
The Swiss writer Robert Walser is one of the quiet geniuses of twentieth-century literature. Largely self-taught and altogether indifferent to worldly success, Walser wrote a range of short stories, essays, as well as four novels, of which Jakob von Gunten is widely recognized as the finest. The book is a young man's inquisitive and irreverent account of life in what turns out to be the most uncanny of schools. It is the work of an outsider artist, a writer of uncompromising originality and disconcerting humor, whose beautiful sentences have the simplicity and strangeness of a painting by Henri Rousseau.  Read  J.M. Coetzee's New York Times Review: The Genius of Robert Wallser.
