Thanks to the more than 8,000 of you who've signed on to become MySpace friends. Your words of encouragement, support and passion for this country – over 1,150 messages all up – have been inspiring to me and my team. It's a great way to connect with people directly all around the country.

Today I'm asking you to help ensure you can exercise your most basic right in our democracy: the right to vote.  Enrolling to vote is, without exaggeration, the single most important way you can make a difference right now.

I know some of you aren't 18 yet, but those who are 17 and over should make sure you're enrolled at your current address; and spread the word to friends, so that you can all have your say on Election Day.

I'm asking you to do this now because this year, your window of opportunity to enrol is going to be alarmingly short.

The Howard Government has passed significant changes to Australia's electoral laws. In the past, the electoral rolls were open for a week after the election was called, in order to allow people to enrol for the first time or to update their enrolment address.

Under Mr Howard's new laws, the electoral roll will now close for new voters on the very day the writs are issued (usually the Monday after the election is called). This means he can call the election on a weekend, and people who are not already enrolled now only have that Monday to act, or they won't have a say at all come Election Day. The new laws also shorten the window to update your enrolment address from one week to just three working days.

If we're not careful, these unfair changes will affect hundreds of thousands of Australians. Last election, 423,975 people sent their enrolment forms in during the week just before the cut-off date. 78,816 of those were new enrolments.

We don't want this election to go down in history as the one that disenfranchised Australians, especially young people. That's why it's vital that everyone check their enrolment details now, and for new voters to get on the roll as soon as they become eligible.

To make it easier, we've listed a few key websites below.

CHECK YOUR ENROLMENT
You can check your enrolment details by clicking on this link: oevf.aec.gov.au

MAKE AMENDMENTS
If changes are required, fill out the form available by clicking on this link: oevf.aec.gov.au

FIRST TIME VOTERS
For all young people aged 17 or 18 years, this is the link for you: www.aec.gov.au/Enrolling_to_vote/How_To_Enrol

OVERSEAS?
If you're living outside Australia, you could lose your right to vote unless you enrol as an "overseas voter".  For more information, and the right forms to complete, visit ALP Abroad: www.alpabroad.org  or go directly to the AEC website for more information www.aec.gov.au/Enrolling_to_vote/Going_overseas

FURTHER HELP OR INFORMATION
Contact the Electoral Commission by phoning 13 23 26, or visit their help page: www.aec.gov.au/About_AEC/Contact_the_AEC/index

SPREAD THE WORD
Please forward this link to your friends so they too can check their enrolment details: oevf.aec.gov.au.

Thanks again for your energy and support. I look forward to blogging regularly.

And keep your comments coming.

And welcome to the blogosphere.

Actually it looks like less than 20% of your friends are <18, so Bill Leak can get knotted.

This might surprise you: if you add up the friends of your friends, you're one degree of separation from nearly 1 million MySpacers, (and that's not counting your artist-type friends' friends).

So when you say " spread the word to your friends", you ain't just whistling Dixie.

GoodToBeWithYou, danny

I won a prize from filling a survey the AEC did in 2005
I only got the prize cause i was enrolled to vote.
I also had my pic taken for some campaign to get young people enrolled.
Maybe you need to get them to do the same thing again.

Thank you Kevin Rudd for making me aware of this new pathetic Howard law!

I am a proud 22 year old enrolled loyal LABOR voter, proudly living in Newcastle, NSW.

I sincerely believe 2007 is the best chance we have to MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN AUSTRALIA!!

I believe as a tax paying proud Australian University Graduate, John Howard has had a negative effect on our country due to his laws such as GST (the % rate has risen in every other country that has adopted it) and (NO) "WORK CHOICES". His continued cooperation and support of President George W Bush, and his lack of honesty and courage to inform us of the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth has caused myself and many many other proud Australians to lose faith and trust (if we ever had any in the first place) in our current leader!

I encourage Australians out there to do have their say, ENROL AND VOTE, make 2007 go down in Australia's history as a year for change, change for good.

Global warming; Australia's health care system; Public education structure, facilities and funding; Road conditions, in particular in country areas; Rights at work; Taxation and interest rate levels; War in Iraq; and Tertiary education facilities are some of the important values and issues to me and the current way hasn't been successfully working for long time and seems to be getting worse.

TIME FOR A CHANGE. I KNOW I'M VOTING KEVIN 07!!

My friends and I are buying KEVIN 07 t-shirts! And I am re-posting this as a blog on my page!

Proud LABOR voter, Cherie Gaston, 22, Newcastle, NSW, Australia.

Investigate 9/11. The official story is a lie. False flag ops are nothing new.

Go Rudd, unless I find out you plan on camping in Iraq/Afghanistan.

Thankyou Kevin, I'm enrolled and excited to be a first time voter in the coming election. I'm the only labor supporter in a family of liberals, so I really look forward to seeing you become our new PM and undoing the damage John Howard has done to this country.

I am all for a change in government / and looking forward to more honest and transparent politics in OZ after the elections. But I am very worried about the performance of the state governments - especially in NSW. With Labour in power in all states and federally who would keep Morris Ieemma and its corrupt government in line.
I have personnaly experienced their corruption via the Department of Communtiy Services last year. The Industrail Relations Commission odered this department to pay me compensation for unfair dismissal, and all they offered was four weeks pay / this four week pay was deem as pay already given to me by mistake! Hence, I got nothing for unfair dismissal. Under the Howard's Worrk relations I would get 12 weeks pay!!!!
I am not sure I want a federal labour government.
Kevin Rudd, what is your answer to state labour's corruption and mismanagement?

Dear Mr. Rudd,

My parents have been strong Labour supporters their whole married life and pretty much most of us twelve kids have voted for Labour too.
It's not that we don't have our own minds (*lol*) cos we do, we simply feel that thru the years, overall, Labour has been more for ALL AUSTRALIANS not just for the rich! This has been proven time and time again.
I have been watching the lead up to this election closely in particular.
I used to see you on Sunrise & I thought back then, that if we had to change Labour's Leader (as I said, this was back then) you would be the best candidate for the job.
You have always appeared friendly, intelligent, a good judge of character (i.e. Julia Gillard), and, most importantly, in touch with what Australia needs TODAY!
It's time for Mr. Howard to go, it's time for Labour to 'represent' all of us with fresh ideas, new policies and all 'round better governing of this beautiful country of ours.
We need someone who will listen to ALL VOTERS, for not only our future but for the children of tomorrow.
We believe in you Mr Rudd and wish you all the very best in this coming election.
My family and I, as registered voters, will most definitely, be voting Labour.

Kind Regards,
The Williams Family.
Gold Coast. Qld.

P.S. We were sorry to see Peter Beattie go but wish him all the best. As for Anna Bligh...SHE IS FANTASTIC!
