Who Gives Kudos:

Thursday, March 15, 2007

My boss went out of town and gave everyone the day off. It feels like when I used to get snowdays all the time in school. And you know what? It's still just as awesome as it was when I was 10. I need more days off like this to enjoy the city. I checked out the MOMA for the first time in years. I feel all cultural. I never get there since I'm always working during the week and it's such a mob scene on the weekends.

I was reading that in Finland, workers have 44 days off every year. 30 paid vacation (which is mandatory) and 14 paid public holidays. That blows my mind! I bet the Finnish people are much happier on average than Americans. We have no law requiring employers to give a minimum number of vacation days and holidays off, paid or unpaid.

Maybe I'll spend the rest of this time off stirring up the Vacation Day Rebellion.

Or maybe I'll just watch sit around in my boxers playing XBox.

Viva la Vacation!

So Hawkins,

Where would you go if you had 44 days of vacation?

I'd hit Jiro Valley for a bit, then check out some of the surf spots of India. Did you know there was 7000 miles of coastline there? I heard the word 'surf' came from India, so they must have some hot waves. http://www.surfingindia.net/india-surf-spots

I know, you can't surf, but I think you just need a good reason to try.

Snow days are why I wish we only had a 4 day work week. We work way too many days and way too many hours. We spend more time at school and work than we do with our families, friends, loved ones, etc. etc. It's crazy insane. Everybody should start to adopt a 4 day work week, 3 day weekend frame of mind. Leaving Friday an OPTIONAL work day. Pass the thought on man, a 4 day work week would be like having a snow day every day of the week for the rest of our lives ;)

I haven't had a vacation in three years. Us programmers are slave labor, I tell you.

You should try Spain, where there are people and companies that effectively shut down during the summer. Or some South American countries where pretty much everyone has an afternoon nap every day of the week.

Yea, the Europeans are definitely better off when it comes to vacation days and holidays. My boss used to travel for business to Europe and Japan both. Europe, he would say, was usually "closed for the summer".

The Japanese, though, are on the other end of the spectrum. They work so much in Japan that they rent places in town to sleep just to avoid the downtime of commuting back to their homes! Here in the U.S. we're kind of in between the two extremes.

Yeah man, all the European citizens get lots of days off like that. It just sems like our country has gona all workoholic and is leaving the average Joe out in the cold. You also gotta think that those European countries for the most part have Government regulated healthcare too, so they don't even have to spend a dime at the doctor's office, and they probably get paid from work if they missed it due to sickness. Man, I'd like to live in Europe, or at least somewhere with better healthcare and 44 days off of work a year lol.

There are a lot holidays in Germany, particulary at spring. Sometimes you have each weak one holiday. Having freetime, drinking beer. Pretty cool :-)

Btw, if you compare various countries, it's really difficult to find the best thing ever. So if we have in Germany good working situation (I mean the office atmosphere, vacation and stuff), but financial aspect isn't soo optimistic like in other countries.

And my girlfriend is Japanese, she works for a Japanese company, and she get really good money.
I mean, even if they are only 30 vacation days maximum, but you can use it much better with cash :-)

Don't think, I'm a money freak, but I would work in an japanese company, if I'd get a chance.
And: there is Wii and PS3 in Japan, hehe.
