Yeah so, there's a new version of "On The Backroads To Nowhere" up on our myspace if you haven't heard it. You should hear it though.

I will now explain the history of this song. "Backroads" was written in early 2008, when Ryan was in the band. This song really marks a point in our short-and-not-very-famous-nor-critically-acclaimed-so-far music career as Slink. We were playing a few basement shows here or there, and actually not doing shit otherwise. I was writing some old songs and not giving them a whole lot of thought, and as it turns out, you've probably never heard them because Slink never even got to the point of writing them as a band. I just wrote a bunch of songs and that was that. Shortly after, Ryan left the band. In case nobody knows, Ryan left in a totally cool way. We still party and chill and all that, and there's no bad blood whatsoever. He's a good friend. Well, out of these songs I had lying around, which were mostly alright, nothing special songs, came "Backroads". I determined that I wanted to write a lot more of a funky, metal kind of music around that point, and this song really hit it. It captured the intensity that I was looking for in my inspirational cosmos. The introduction originally didn't have those words "Don't you bullshit me one more time, FUCK YOU". It actually just started right in with that heavy nasty chord line. After I wrote all the verses and the chorus, I thought it would be cool to throw in some crazy profane language to let you know exactly what Slink is about to do to your ears.

When Slink (at this time, Ian and I) wrote this song, and perfected it, I had actually written it months in advanced, and it sounded way different. It was a lot slower, it had different words, it didn't have that trippy, weird bridge, or that ridiculous played-by-dinosaurs sounding heavy part, and there wasn't any of that crazy guitar shit that comes right after the bridge in the version you hear today. I was getting better at playing guitar to say the least, and I came up with these ugly, nasty tricks to do. After working it out with Ian, we had crafted a song that really set the bar in terms of what kind of music we were going for. A heavy, nuts intro, A memorable melody on the verses, a perfect hook melody in the chorus, ultra sexified ten thousand percent slap bass, funky verses, and enough guitar solos to confuse a platypus. Overall, it was definitely heavy metal.

So one day I get the bright idea, "Hey maybe, I can just play the drums and have a recorded version of this bad baby next TUESDAY!". So, I borrowed a kit and I did. What happened though, was that drums are a lot harder to play than it sounds. I took a million takes to record it, and when I got a finished product, it was basically, more along the lines of "Damn... Well at least there's drums to it." Ian came in and laid down bass tracks, I took days on end getting my guitar to sound good, and then I sang it and we had a version of it done. We put it up on the myspace for a goooood long while.

After that, Dustin joined the band, and made sure that I would never have to butcher my own songs with my poor drumming ever again. We recorded this new version, complete with better vocals, louder bass, crazier guitar solos, and Dustin on drums. It's heavier, it's juicier, and it's better than the old version.

Now I don't want to sound conceited, but I think this song is worth a good 10,000 listens per Slink fan. Do your part.
