SEARS, Jason Kemper

February 3, 2006 7:44 AM
Jason Sears, RKL frontman, Cito Rat, artist, storyteller, son, father, brother, and all around legend, died in a clinic in Mexico on January 31, 2006. At the time of his death he was undergoing medical treatment for his long term medical problems. He struggled for as long as any of us can remember, and in the end, the demons that kept him from fully engaging in this life took him. Jason died in his sleep.

Jason was born at Cottage Hospital on January 23, 1968. His accomplishments and achievements were enormous, although they are not the type measured by traditional mainstream society. He didn't graduate college. He didn't belong to any club, church or society. And yet, he touched literally thousands of people, influenced a generation of musicians and enjoyed the kind of personal prestige usually reserved for only the very wealthy and very powerful. His death has brought sadness to family and friends literally around the world.

Jason was a born leader. Whatever he attempted, he mastered. At age 14 he was the 4th ranked surfer in the country in his age group. He was a member of the first Barfoot snowboarding team. With the help of his dad, he built the Cito ramp in his backyard on Featherhill, and he and the other skaters took the sport of skateboarding to another level. He and a few friends dreamed up RKL and worked at it continuously for two decades reaping the benefits and suffering the setbacks associated with the music industry. Go into any independent record store in the country, and you'll find RKL. Mention Jason's name to any punk rocker, and the reaction will be a big smile and wide eyes. Jason was indeed a true legend.

Jason is survived by his mom Suzanne Sears, his dad and stepmother, Jack Sears and Emilie McMinn, his children Anthony, Sierra and Cisco, his siblings Steve Wright(Lori), Stacey Wright, Tracy Van Wormer (Trent) and Seana Alderman(Brian). We will have a memorial and celebration of Jason's life in the near future. For now, we let him rest in peace.

REST IN PEACE BROTHER!!!!  This hits kinda harshly, I only had one chance to see RKL, living in Chicago most of my life, Jason was one of the coolest people I've ever met....  His lyrics had a huge influence on me, and  he was one of my all favorites!!!!  RKL was one of the best bands of all time, and the future of punk will never match the energy that came out of RKL!!!  My condolences go out to all his family, friends, and fans everywhere.....

He will truely be missed by many.....

For all you fools out there, RKL stands for Rich Kids on LSD.  Jason was a good kid and I partied my ass off with them and all my other rich drugie friends in Montecito.  We were called the Cito Rats...met at the Grotto, Chicken, The Rock, Butterfly........those were the good old days but I'm glad I survived my drug induced LSD escapades - no more for me!  You are missed Jason...... say "hi" to Leigh  and Robert for me........

Holier Than Thou?

Jason always supported us, and R.K.L. was the single biggest influence on our music...  he was also a truly friendly person, and a joy to be around...  after we (individually) saw R.K.L. many times as kids, we each somehow met the guys in the band, and had a few chances to hang out...  when we opened for R.K.L. a few times, it was like a dream come true, but they were never "rock stars" about it, ya' know?  they were "bros" and we had a very relaxed & comfortable experience with them...  Bomber was also a fun guy to be around, and we had lots of chances to experience his manic genius as well...  and then there was Derrick, who was not a member for very long, but always a part of the overall phenomenon, and a VERY close friend to some of the members of HTT?...  they will all be missed in a very real and heartfelt way by each and every member of Holier Than Thou?  i'm gonna wrap this up now, or else i'm gonna start crying...

-d.r. (vocalist, HTT?)

Dead Lazlo’s Place (recording now!)

Being from LA and having the chance to open for RKL on several occasions, we consider ourselves lucky to be part of the same scene and same group of friends as Jason. He made us laugh when we were in his presence and he his voice will carry on forever through the many record released by the legendary RKL.

Rest in Peace, brother!

Your brothers from DEAD LAZLO'S PLACE (Gizz, Chris, Ike, Steve and Dave)

Killer obituary. Grew up on SB shows, the Red Barn, & lots of RKL in late 80's. When I think back to all those good times & how pumped Jason was...I just laugh. Truly sic experience. Looking bk, I realize how lucky I was to be rocked by one of the most enlightend rock/thrash bands of all times. There was no one like them on earth. I can't stop blair'n Rock N Roll nightmare these days....
