The city of Lancaster is doing whatever they can to raise funds, and their latest method is particularly ruthless:

If your lawn doesn't match up to their standards you face fines of up to $500! We got a notice in the mail detailing the city codes we're breaking with pictures of our lawn; so they are definitely taking this seriously. I called into the Lancaster officer in charge of my neighborhood and she basically confessed they're doing this because of a budget shortfall.

From my conversation I have the following advice for you: don't do anything until after they've inspected (and issued a warning) your lawn. If they see progress after the inspection they will not fine you!

They are going north to south, east to west.

wow.. $500 is steep.. I can see that it can partly be good, as it will cause alot of homeowners to take care of their house, which in the end increases value.. but that still extreme. Out here we have homeowners associations, which you have to pay fees to, and if your house is a mess and people complain (or you don't pay your dues) they put a lien on your home.. which is nuts. Good luck with all that.

HAHA I just thought of 'Over the Hedge' too! Nice on Jimmy!

On the serious side...that STINKS...course I'll be glad when a few houses in my parents' neighborhood get a good sized fine for their vandalism-style "yard care".

So what if you are one of those people who follows the water coalition's advice, and instead of a lawn you have desert landscaping? Will you still be fined?

Judging from my conversation with the Lancaster officer: Yes.

Actually, well-maintained Zero Scapes are OK. They can't fine them, based upon some of the new Green Laws LA County has instituted. Although they could probably find some way to make the laws stricter for them, maintenence-wise.

Man, that bites. Another screw off thing that Lancaster is deciding to do...and since HOA's haven't entered, the City actually thinks it can pull this off...

It is possible that there might be a law against such a thing. Doesn't hurt to look up Homeowner Rights, or whatever it might be under before paying any fines you might receive...Just a thought...

Good thought. In the meantime I'll throw down some seed and fertilizer and see what happens :P

Maybe if they would lower gas prices we would have enough money to make our lawns pretty....
