Vagner Love are a three piece from Manchester who are making quite a stir at this years In The City festival. The Naeem brothers started the group a few years ago and are now getting rave reviews even before their debut single release. It would be fair to describe them as sounding like a mancunian Lemonheads serving up pop nibbles at an indie buffet. We spoke to their lead singer Hasan Naeem and drummer Ben Taylor about being one of Manchester music’s most revered and original groups at the moment.
What made you want to want to start playing music?
Hasan: “The first thing that made me want to pick up guitar when I was younger was nirvana. After that it was Oasis, Noel was like god when I was younger… Ginger from the Wildhearts was also a massive influence.”
Ben: “I come from quite a musical family and playing drums came quite naturally… I wasn’t that great at football either so I just tried hitting stuff instead! In terms of influences though it has to be Zeppelin.”
How long has the band been going?
Hasan: “I got my brother onto bass about 2 years ago in the winter and we started to jam out some songs… our old drummer left and we recruited Ben on drums and we clicked. It sounds like a very clichéd thing to say but we all just hit it off straight away and the band just seemed to come together at that point.”Whats it like being in a band with brothers?
Ben: “I think that the whole family relationship adds to band and the way we play. It can be difficult sometimes! The last show was a nightmare! Mo drank the entire rider the band had been given whilst me and Hasan had only had two beers between us. The brotherly relationship went a bit sour at that point! We try not to talk about it now…[Laughs]”
Any chance of hearing a single anytime soon?
Ben: “We are going into the studio this week to get our first recording done. Its not going to be a single but we think it will be three tracks for us to simply give to people to show them what we sound like.”Hasan: “There is no time limit on the recording so we don’t have a definite date for it but anyone who comes down to a gig will get a copy… I can’t wait to record “Don’t Let Go” because it was the first song we wrote together and I just want people to hear it.” By Alf Cowan
