Blanket-A-Human On the sidewalks of downtown San Diego, the same phenomenon occurs in our miniature metropolitan area as does in other major cites like Chicago, New York, or San Francisco. Distinct and clean working people with ID badges brush shoulders with tattered and tired wonderers of the homeless community. The city’s trashcans are an open source of edible scraps and aluminum cans. The sidewalks of our downtown area are alive with a thriving population of socialites sadly mixed in with a homeless community wasting away from neglect.
It’s not to say the people who find themselves on the far less fortunate end of the human spectrum are blameless. Homeless individuals find themselves dug deep in a hole, the reason for why they are there isn’t the catalyst for help – the human compassion is. The Blanket A Human organization chooses not get tangled up with the why but instead directs their efforts towards the how.
The questions Nima Nejat, Founder of Blanket-A-Human, woke up with one morning were filled with how’s. How can I actually make a change? How do I get others involved? What began as a question blossomed into a full-fledged humanitarian effort to bridge the gap between those who want to help and those in need. Ironically, those two groups involved are passing each other on the street. Nima and a few close friends used their contacts and altruistic ambition to start the evolution of change, beginning with their groups of friends.
"People want to do something but they don’t have the vehicle to do so." The Blanket A Human organization employs a unique approach in attracting the help of their friends. Through the use of MySpace and word of mouth, Nima and his friends have garnered surprising momentum towards their goal of getting 1,000 blankets and 1,000 pillows by mid-December by combining the charitable cause with nightlife. The idea of taking the self-indulging act of partying and combining it with a charitable endeavor works to create a stoked vibe not always common with the bar crowd. For their events, you can "ditch the cover if you bring a cover." Instead of the money going to the pockets of promoters, blankets go to the homeless; the simplicity of it all gets people involved. Blanket-A-Human, through its close relationship with the entertainment scene, has created a working dynamic between having fun and doing a charitable deed. "Homeless people are forgotten people," Nima said of the 15,000 constituents of San Diego County’s homeless "Blankets are the quick, simple and practical solution… but that’s just the start." As the word continues to spread and more friends of friends show up to their weekly meetings, their efforts are beginning to gain strength. Other organizations and large companies have been contacting Nima, all wanting to help and participate. "Initially it was just a one time thing," Nima said, "but the momentum was just too much. After San Diego we plan to blanket California."
Never Satisfied, the people behind the Refuge surf film, donated their services to the organization and produced an eight-minute video that paints a portrait of the often-ignored problem. With the power of such tools like the informational film combined with the fundraising opportunities of the downtown nightlife and the ambition of an eager generation of fresh minds, the Blanket-A-Human organization has arrived.
