Stop Congress From Expanding School Searches

Dear Friends:

Students for Sensible Drug Policy is asking for your help to stop a bill that would further curtail the rights of students in public schools all across the country. The so-called Student and Teacher Safety Act of 2006 (H.R. 5295) would make it easier for teachers and school administrators to search students lockers and bags for drugs and other contraband. SSDP needs your help to make sure that this bill never becomes law.

Currently, in order for a teacher to search a students locker they need to have reasonable suspicion that the student is in possession of illegal drugs. H.R. 5295 would change the standard needed for a search to colorable suspicion, a term that has been made up entirely for this bill. Essentially, a teacher would need nothing more than a hunch in order to search a students locker or possessions.

This bill is nothing more than another attack on the constitutional rights of young people by the federal government. Students should never have to check their constitutional rights at the schoolhouse door.

Please take two minutes to send a letter to your member of Congress asking him or her to oppose H.R. 5295. SSDP has created a pre-written letter that you can easily send by visiting http://capwiz.com/mobilize/issues/alert/?alertID=8779706

If you can afford it, please consider making a financial contribution large or small to SSDPs efforts to beat back the governments Drug War attacks on young people at http://www.ssdp.org/donate/

Thank you for taking action to stop this drastic bill. SSDP will continue to keep you informed of our efforts to stop this dangerous piece of legislation from becoming law.

Regards,

Kris Krane

One of my friends got strip searched simply because of a false rumor that he had coke on his person... Is that the kind of thing we want to happen to our children?

Those who would sacrifice freedom for safety deserve neither.

As a parent it's not a bad idea! Children and Teens take drugs to school everyday and sell it out. The reinforcement to prevent it those who oppose are those who may not want to be caught. Drugs has no place in anyone's hands ever, not even adults. It' s no game and it ruins lives, it's dangerous not to mention to others who are affected by it. Drugs have no place no where! The only way to stop it is to crack down on those who sell and pass it around especially discreatly. What is done in darkness, will come to light. What comes around goes around. It's to keep children and teachers safe from the physchosis affect it does on it's victims. It needs to stop and it's about time...

i completely agree. Not to mention that some of these searches have turned up weapons and plans for school shootings and bombings. With the recent rash of school shootings, we need to protect the safety of students and faculty.

We have to sign that we agree with the handbook, the handbook states that our school reserves the right to do a random locker search at any time. It's so stupid you can't even have TYENOL in your locker... I get migraines and they constantly change my prescription so I keep a few on me at all times in my pencil case that I always carry with me considering if we had a dog search my fiornal contains a narcotic and that would not be good, it's absolutely insane having to get a new doctor form every time I get new medication because if its YOUR PRESCRIPTION- YOUR DOCTOR HAS TO FILL OUT A PAGE LONG FORM! Why can't you just keep it in the office with a note from your parents, or the 18 year old student if that applies to the case.
