Friday, Oct. 9www.trenton-downtown.comTrenton Review Kick-Off Party. 6 PM. Gallery 125, 125 S. Warren St. Light refreshments will be served. Trenton has always been a leader in arts and letters in New Jersey: Pulitzer-prize winning poets, nationally-recognized photographers, the leaders in graffiti, one of the great clubs in the history of music. The Trenton Review, a new journal from Trenton, turns the spotlight on arts and letters in the city. This journal features Dean Ween talking about City Gardens, poetry by Yusef Komunyakaa, photography by Jon Naar, an interview with Leon Rainbow and an essay on the artistic vision of Passage Theatre.
1st Foreign Film Festival at the Mill Hill Playhouse. 205 E. Front Street. Oct. 9-11. Six films from countries around the world will be screened at the first foreign film festival in Trenton. Presented by the Trenton Film Society. Friday Oct. 9 Features: Three Monkeys - Turkey/France/Italy. Nuri Bilge Ceylan. 2008. 108 min. Turkish w/ English subtitles. After his critically acclaimed mood pieces Distant and Climates, Turkey's leading filmmaker moves in a more plot-driven direction while retaining his mastery of ambiance, nuance and astonishing cinematography. Winner of the Best Director prize at Cannes, Three Monkeys tells a twisty, noirish tale that opens with an ambitious politcian fleeing a hit-and-run accident. Afraid of hurting his election chances, he pays off his chauffer Eyuo to take the rap. The film concerns the effects of this devil's bargain on Eyup's family as simmering tentions and sexual intrigue wreak havoc in a household already haunted by hidden ghosts. In the spirit of Bunuel's The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and Haneke's Cache, Three Monkeys mounts a caustic crtitiques of the bourgeois family, riddled with hypocrisy yet stubbornly resilient in its seemingly bondless capacity to sidestep guilt and accountability. Cannes Film Fest-Best Director.
