My wife Sonja and I headed to Nashville this past weekend as we'd signed up for the Country Music 1/2 Marathon. Outside of our first somewhat lengthy race, we didn't really have any plans. The weekend exploded into a great experience of one of America's great music cities.
4am. Dark. Not cold. Sleepy. Did I sign up for this? Get dressed. Drive across town. Park outside where Titans play football... Run. 13.1. Must. Not. Walk. Zone out. Less than two hours later. Finish line. Woot. Water!
Get food. Get clean. Get out of shoes. Get off feet.
3pm. We head downtown. I have reclaimed my command of the English language; as much as I ever had, anyway. We head to a guitar shop so I can look into some things I can't quite afford. There is something special about playing a nice guitar in Nashville... even if the people working at the shop aren't all that nice.
On our way back to the car, we walk past this honkey-tonk and notice a killer pedal steel guitar player ripping it up. "Wanna go in? Sure." We head to the bar for a bev, and turn around to be absolutely floored by the band. Just tearing it up. Chicken pickin' finger-style telecaster with great tone, faster than plausible. Awesome. That guys trades 8s with the steel. Really just a phenomenal experience.
An hour and a half later, we realize we are starving. Head to eat.
After dinner, we get a text that some friends are thinking of tailgating at the DMB show at Vanderbilt Stadium. On our way, there's guy trying to get rid of some tickets. We make an offer, he counters. We get in for 1/2 price. Not bad.
3 hours later, we head home. All in all a great day.
To top it off, we were staying with a really good friend's parents. As it turns out, in addition to voice-over work, Byron has a gold record on the wall, and made is way in music production in Nashville over the years. He was also a member of a folk trio in New York in the 60s. We had some great conversation.
I can recommend Nashville without reservation. It's a great place to stay, and it seems to be a great place to live.
