There is a lot of controversy about the K-II meter that we experiment with on our investigations. The K-II is the small meter with multi-colored lights that we use to detect magnetic fields and frequency.

We use this in two ways. The first, is as it was originally intended, to detect magnetic fields. If we find a high field, that field could be the cause of a false sense of paranormal activity.

The second way is to try and communicate with entities. It would seem, and we still aren't firm believers yet (if ever), that you can instruct an entity to approach the device and the device will respond to an entity which is in close proximity to the device. If this is true, then one could, in theory, have the entity approach the device and make the lights illuminate to indicate an affirmative answer to a question.

So, now that you know how we use it, here are the shortcomings of the device that we know of so far. We feel you should know these shortcomings so that you can not be fooled by it, and also that you all know that WE know these shortcomings.

1. The Power Button - The power button on the device requires the user to hold it down in order for the device to function. The problem with this is that, no matter how strong you are, after a while of holding the button, your thumb will start to fatigue. When this happens, the lights on the device will illuminate, giving a false reading.

We bypass this problem easily and inexpensively by shoving a coin in the switch, effectively wedging the power button on. We have also had some K-II's modified with a hard-wired toggle switch, this is great but some people don't trust a K-II that has been opened up and modified. So, we use both.

2. Cell Phones & Walkies - A little known fact about the K-II is that is also detects frequencies. A cell phone, or a walkie/two-way radio can set off the K-II as far as 20 feet away. This can easily fool people into thinking they are communicating with an entity when actually, their cell phone is looking for signal, or another investigator is trying to reach them on their walkie.

We avoid this by shutting off our cell phones and walkies during K-II sessions. Plus, with a little bit of experience, it is VERY easy to identify when the readings are caused by a cell phone or walkie. The device will continually flash very quickly when it is detecting a cell phone. It will spike similarly but not as intensely when it is a walkie. A small two-way radio can give false readings that are almost EXACTLY like those that are believed to be paranormal. So, PLEASE, be careful.

Added - 11/15/08: Also, if the K-II is placed near our wireless audio transmitters it will go off. Naturally, we avoid placing it near our packs. Usually, Arms length at pack level is enough. Once you venture above or below it, it doesn't set the K-II off.

3. The Green Light - When using the K-II, you find yourself staring at the green light waiting for some response. The problem here is that you spend the whole session staring at the light while potentially missing other paranormal activity.

Friends of ours have hard-wired a tiny speaker in the device that will emit a beep that repeats more frequently the higher the reading is. This is great because, your ears are able to pick up any reading, leaving your eyes to be more vigilant. It also allows you to record the whole event with just a digital recorder.

So, as of right now, we know that the device has its flaws as do ALL the devices we use. But we will continue to experiment and determine the best fit for this device in the field. I just wanted you all to know what we know, and that we are going to great lengths to ensure that we are NOT being fooled by the device.

We had that too, with radios setting it off.

Our best false positive was a "conversation" we had with an underground cable. On debunking it, I said, "Well, at least we know the cable's name is Anna"

Indeed, the potential tampering factor is high. However if you accept that, and treat any evidence produced by its use accordingly, it can still be a useful tool for creating opportunities to falsify or corroborate other results.

Thanks for taking the time to address this decidedly controversial subject, Grant.

It was nice meeting you at TAPScon in Clearwater. See you in May!

Very interesting, yet after seeing some epidosdes with the K-II it appears you can also test with questions to see if the lights are random or not.

Either way its fascinating!

Can't wait for the live show next friday!

Thank much G-man! I just got mine a few days ago. So far the cat is clean and my co-workers all appear to be alive. It does light up nicely to my ringtone on my cell. yes I called myself, it was rather amusing.

I'll be able to really use it Sunday! Wish me luck :)

Hey Grant...
Thanks for the update, it was helpful. I have been trying to organize a large scale experiment with these meters, to see if the fuss is warranted or not...but it seems the community is not overtly interested in doing that. I am still going to get a group of friends together to work on the experiment around the country, so I will let you know what the results are when we finalize them.

The information about the Walkies was really good for me to know...so Thanks!

I think most of us are aware that not everything you guys use is 100% but realise that we watch your show because we enjoy it but mostly because we trust you. You and Jason and Steve and the others just seem very trustworthy, so it's easy to understand that you're not trying to pull a fast one, it's just not your style!

One question...have you ever tried the "Ovilus" that supposedly takes EMF spikes and pronounces words from the entity? If so, what are your thoughts? Paranormal State used it on one of their investigations and it seemed to yield some results. Of course, it could be a coincidence (or something else). As everyone, love the show...look forward to it every week!

My group calls the Ovilus the idiot-scaring device.

What it does is pick random words from a list supplied by someone (who seems to be obsessed with demons). How could anyone make real messages from EMF fluctuations? We have no reason to believe EMF fluctuations represent real words.

Give me EVPs anytime!

I think I saw that same episode of paranormal state. Didn't they call it Franks Box or something like that? Grant, have you ever come across that device? I was pretty impressed. Then again I spook easily! There was an episode where you & Jason experience something in the room, the K2 jumped, but when you asked a question or two you got no response. Do you think when that happens that it is just a residual haunting as opposed to an intelegent haunting that can actually communicate?

I would like to see devices like the K-II, with lights for indicators, placed in areas where cameras are set on still. Also leave a digital recorder in that area.

What this would lead me to hope for is 2-3 signs at the same time. Audio, a light indicator, and visual could happen at the same time - without an investigator need be present. This would be a solution or more affirming sense to a shadow or mist perhaps.

I'm no pro, but it is an idea I'd like to see implimented.

"Friends of ours have hard-wired a tiny speaker in the device that will emit a beep that repeats more frequently the higher the reading is." This is a GREAT idea and I'm going to suggest that our group do this. I found myself staring at the meter on our last investigation way more than I should have. However, perhaps we should also purchase another K-II because of the fact that, like you say, some people don't trust a K-II that has been opened up and modified. Thanks Grant.

Commonwealth Paranormal

I was unaware that a cell phone would interfere with the K-2 until a couple of weeks ago when We were out on an investigation. We normally turn all of our cell phones off during an investigation but I had forgotten to turn mine off this particular night. Well my phone just happened to ring and at the same time the K-2 went nuts..lol. The rest of the group at first thought it was going nuts because of paranormal activity; but we quickly debunked that as soon as I ended my call.

So yea cell phones definitely interfere with K-2's!

Thxs for the heads up. I think breaking out the K2 when the activity is going nuts everywhere is great as another way to measure and verify , to the extent that you can, solid interaction with a ghost.

I do share the common argued belief (isn't the internet fan community grand lol), that I do prefer your use of the FLIR over the K2... You just seem to catch more solid evidence with that device which could be used as proof of actual verifiable proof of a place being haunted while on a case.
