PIRACY

Recently, I've read the discussion that says downloading pirated e-books is no different from taking a book to a used bookstore, or checking out a book from the library.

This is faulty reasoning.

The difference between USBs and Libraries and Pirate sites is that libraries and whoever took the book to the USB bought the book.  It's ONE COPY. That $7 was paid, regardless of whether it sits on the original buyer's shelf or in the hands of library or USB patrons.

When somebody pirates a book, the book can be copied ENDLESSLY on thousands and thousands of computers.  It's more like making photocopies and giving them away. The authors get no money for any of those pirated copies.

You have to remember: somebody like me makes damn good money, and piracy really doesn't hurt me that much.

But when you start talking about pirating some poor author who gets paid $100 a month in royalties, she's taking it up the ass.  And make no mistake: that's all most e-book authors make a month.  A few make good money, but most don't, particularly new authors.

Fuck me over if you want to.  But DON'T fuck over that poor little author, because she's not making any money to begin with.

And these little e-pubs are now struggling desperately in the current rotten economy.  Piracy can sink these little pubs very easily.

So if you download pirated books, you are contributing to the destruction of the very thing you love -- the ability of creators to create fine fiction.  Yes, anybody can write a story and put it on a website, but it's not going to get edited by a professional, it will suffer in quality, and creators will not have the chance to learn from the process of working with a professional editor.  Do NOT discount the value of editors to writers.  The ultimate difference professional input makes in quality is like comparing something somebody puts on You Tube to GONE WITH THE WIND.

Another thing: let's say everybody gets pirated books, and ALL the pubs go under.  People like me would have to find full time jobs doing something else, and all you would get out of my ass is short stories I write at night when I'm not working at Walmart.

Currently, I give money to CARE, to various other charities, and every fricking relative I have, from my son to my paralyzed brother in law.  All that goes away.  The classes I teach when I go to writer's chapters go away, because I could not afford to travel.

This is not idle speculation, because piracy has done serious damage to the music industry.  Record stores have gone out of business; the CD selection in stores like BEST BUY is shrinking.  I make a point of buying music.  I REFUSE to go to pirate sites because eventually, you can make it impossible for these companies to make any money at all.  They will go under. I do buy music at iTunes, and I often buy entire albums.  It's a way to make sure artists can keep producing.

So don't steal from artists, whether it's downloading pirated books, music or movies.  It's stealing, and eventually you will destroy the very artists whose work you enjoy.

Piracy is wrong and I do buy books and CD's. Especially those of my favorite authors and artists such as you, Laurell K.
Hamilton, Amanda Ashley, Stephanie Meyer, and MANY others, far too many music artists to name =)

You are right about piracy and it does make the world a worse off place, and I would be deeply saddened if you or anyone else had to quit their job just because of stupid teenagers thinking its cool to download stuff illegally.

P.S. Writers like you inspire smaller writers like me. You may not remember but I wrote a poem inspired from your book, Master of the Moon and e-mailed it to you =) It is called Half Power.

A HUGE FAN,

I agree with you 100% stealing is stealing and to justify it by saying a lot of people are buying the e-books so me taking one little copy wont hurt the author. It hurts everyone and it is how some of the cool things on computers end up going away. Kudos to you for hopefully opening some of the peoples eyes and keeps a venue open for new and up comming authors out there.

Amen to your blog !
Many people suffer at the hands of illegal downloads, I worked in the music world for a few years and I watched bands struggle to even eat due to the high volume of illegal downloads, even selling cds at music stores and wal mart they only make a percent and it is a very small percent, I ALWAYS buy my music at concerts, then said band gets 100% of the money from each sale.

Same goes for books, yes at time I have gone and bought used books but 9 times out of 10 I hit a bookstore to buy the book I want, so what if I pay more, if I want to keep reading these stories my favorite writers about then it is a price well worth paying, its also a way of showing support to said writer and kinda a bribe to keep their wonderful minds working to give us readers a moment of peace and wonderment.

I totaly agree, piracy is stealing and the more people steal the more everyone else gets screwed. I'm glad you brought that up, especially with the holidays coming up so fast.

Thank you SO much for posting this! One of my fellow Amira authors posted a link to a woman that had hundreds of books for the taking from this user here... http://www. esnips. com/user/connors21
She's shut down right now, but I'm sure others will be willing to pick up the slack. Right now, I only have one book out and it's an e-book, so yeah, I'm scared of people like this.
Other authors, like yourself and Morgan, this IS your job and you're very good at it and stealing from any one is just not right!
B*B and Happy Yule/Birthday!

You tell them!!! I like free as much as the next person but Stealing isn't free. I spend alot of my disposable income on books and ebooks. I've found some of my favorite authors including you through ebooks. Alot of authors get their start publishing ebooks. I love finding new authors that way. Thanks for speaking up on their behalf.

I agree.
Priated, free from anyone,
(unless it was pre-paid for from a ligitamite source).......it's all sugar coated to hide the real cause......IT'S STEALING!
Stealing is never right and you don't need anything that badly that you need to steal to get it!

I'm with you! It's wrong in any form and it needs to stop or all forms of our enjoyment are going to either go sky high in price or we will run the artist or author out of business!

Holy crap you have a sailor mouth lol:) I agree though, I buy ebooks at really good prices and hell books are freaking cheap anyway. I can get a book at walmart for $4 why steal it? As for music I like itunes or I buy the CD. I wish they sold singles in stores more so I can get the one song I like off a CD but I just download the single.

I agree with you SO MUCH! It's extreamly sad! I'll continue to buy my music from stores along with my books! No one deserves to lose money because people are too cheap and rude to go buy a book whether from a store or on the net.

pirating is stealing --- i don't see why others can't figure that out

girl, your naughty language was funny, btw --- you must have been mad when writing that blog

i didn't realize e-book authors made so little a month... I'm not published but I am trying to be. That low pay worries me. how can anyone make a living at writing if they aren't stephan king or someone? that sucks.
