Well...I know I've said this before, but this time it's different. I'm sticking to my guns.

For the last six years, I have spent almost all of my free time at conventions, or with anime fans (Anime at the Alamo, clubs, etc.). I don't get paid for it, I do it because I enjoy it. I like meeting people & making friends. But things have changed A LOT in the last two or three years and it's starting to feel more like "work" than fun.

So for 2009 I'm only doing 10 out of state conventions.
(Texas Cons and Conventions outside of the US are open).

Here's Why . . . .

1. MONEY - Most of the guests you see appearing at conventions are charging "Appearance Fees" now. They range from reasonable to totally ridiculous. If that wasn't enough, now some of them are even charging money for their autographs as well. The minute you start to treat conventions as "work" they become just that...work.

Along those lines, I find it really annoying that a lot of them don't even like being around anime fans. One specific actor, has even been quoted in an interview as saying "I don't watch this shit!". I think a lot of actors forget that I feel, I have more in common with anime fans that I do them.

2. POORLY RUN SHOWS - Wow...there could be a seven page rant about this one fact alone. While the number of anime conventions has gone up quite a bit over the last few years...the number of well run conventions has dropped through the floor. Even shows that I used to look forward to going to every year, have now been put on my "Never Again" list.

My "Personal Injury Tour" joke about this year wasn't really a joke. I suffered broken ribs at one show (which I was never even reimbursed for medical expenses), then had to be rushed to the ER just a week later at another. It's hasn't just been MY health that has been put in jeopardy either. This convention season alone I have heard of 1 abduction, 2 rapes, and 3 overdoses. That's really pathetic.

3. HATERS - I am so tired of shitty people. Whether it's assholes in afro-wigs or people talking shit on the internet, I'm done with it. Anime Conventions used to be a place where no matter who you were - you could meet new people and make friends, without dealing with the bullying bullshit most of us felt in the real world. Now, in some cases it's worse at conventions than it is "out there". Whether it's people picking on plus-sized cosplayers, or just assholes looking for a fight...it's pretty sad to see us "nerds" acting like "jocks".

4. ME - Last but not least...It's time that I gave myself a break. It's kind of hard to feel like a normal person, when you don't live a normal life. I would like to have some of my life back...I have a family, and friends who almost never see me. It's just not fair to them. For years I have put the needs and expectations of anime fans above everything else...and it's time I put their needs first.

I'm also starting my own business next year, and will need time to get that off the ground. It's something that I'm really excited about and want to make sure that I give it a lot of attention. I'm not willing to talk about it just yet...so please don't ask for specifics. It's also something that will not keep me from doing work as a voice actor, or going to conventions...which is a huge plus.

So there you have it...in a nutshell.

There's a lot more I can (and probably will) say on the subject, but for now...I think that's enough.

I know that by limiting the number of conventions I go to, will effect how many people I get to see this next year. But I hope that when we do get to see each other, that it's good for you and me both.

Take Care (of each other)

I'm glad to hear you are taking a bit of a "break" ^^ I remember talking to you at anime iowa this year about it. I can't believe you broke your ribs at one though, man... thats just sad.
I forget which one you said was your favorite, one in Arkansas right? I want to go and I can't remember which one it is ^^;

And good luck on your new buisiness ^^ I hope it gains as much, if not more success than your voice acting career ^^

Anyhow, I'll stop taking up space in your comment box ^^

As someone who's been watching the con scene very closely I can say I can agree with you on a majority of these points.

What really gets me is about really poorly run cons. I don't want to make this comment entirely about me, and be a horrible attention whore, but after putting in nearly half a decade of my 20's into a con that left me bitter and a pariah locally, I've got to say something about the staffing side. This strikes me close to my heart. Mostly because I alienated a lot of really good, decent and honorable people because I stood up for my principles when it came to certain personalities within the staffing body at the local con I staffed. This isn't the place to name names, or kiss and tell, but when I hear the same story I went through myself from other staffers and ex-staffers at cons and shows all over this country and abroad, it makes me wonder why we, as fans, risk burn out and absolutely hating this fandom for this crap. Leaders who can't lead, team members who can't act like they're part of a team, and folks who can't see a greater goal ahead of them or even understand what "professionalism" means. I can't imagine what life is like for guests who have to see this peripherally either.

Also, it just also shocks me that there are events that bend over backwards for certain personalities in the industry because they may have strong fanbases, not caring about the trail of horror stories that seem to follow in their wake. It just seems like some cons are willing to put up with a lot of crap in exchange for a "top" guest that may or may not even have any real impact on overall con experience for a majority of con goers.

I've rambled enough in your own blog post. ._.; sorry. But that just ... that struck to close to my own heart.

Oh Gods, I understand what you mean about some of that stuff. The only real chaos I endured this year was Flug Tag at Metro, with that girl who got shoved down an escalator by some drunks, and the way that went. Otherwise, not much in the sense of con drama happened to me/friends/people I sorta know this year. I'm hoping this upcoming year wont be bad.
*crosses fingers*

It's really smart (imo) of you to take a break and try to be yourself, and the anime fan of yourself. <3 I can't wait to hear more about that business of yours.
: D

You take care too, you're already off to a great start.

don't worry about it. if you don't give yourself a break then you'll just burnout which will affect your work, life, ect. Everyone knows you care about the fans, and to me, thats enough.
Keep up the good work!

You can add to that the fact that some of the J Rock artists that appear, are now initializing a 'No Photographs' policy (unsure if any voice actors/seiyuus are doing it as well). Several acts did just that this year, at cons they appeared at, from what I heard. It's sad to hear that artists (musician, actors..etc) are grabbing the money in anyway they can, from the fans, and then turning around to bad mouth the whole thing. Talk about being ungrateful. >.
<

I realize the artists need to make a living too, but as you pointed out, it winds up turning something that had been 'just for the fun of it' into something that's too close to 'going to work.
'

Your health and overall well-being, are far more important, so if scaling back your con activities allows you to take better care of yourself, then do it. Those who care, will understand. Those who bitch, are idiots, and maybe should try doing what you do. Let's and see how well they hold up. I'm just sorry to hear that things have gotten so bad at some cons that your health was jeopardized in the first place.

I wish you all the best, Greg.. In everything you choose to do.

Please do take care of yourself.

Good Luck, and God Bless.

It sounds bad to say it, but sometimes you really do have to put yourself first. Everyone needs a break sometimes; that's why most employers offer vacation time.

Save yourself from burnout, and don't feel bad about taking a much needed and well earned break.

limiting it to ten is still going to far more then I currently am able to ^^;
I agree with you on alot of those reasons though. I've only been going to cons for a couple of years now and even within that short time frame I've seen cons go down hill quite a bit.
I hope it doesn't become a continuing trend, or I might have to start booking vacations to Japan eventually xD
Best of luck with your business, and take it easy man. I've only met you a couple of times randomly at cons but you and your brother are two very awesome people and I'm sure you've touched alot of young anime fans and will continue to do so.
Hope you never loose your love for conventions ^___^d

I understand compleatly. nobody should have to worry about getting hurt at a con, and some of them have gotten so crapy...not naming cons...they are getting to big for themselves. my first con the chairman at the opening ceremonies said, "lets keep the ambulances to a minimum of 3 this year"...
i understand compleatly.

Out of all the voice actors out there, I think it's easiest to see how much you really care about the industry and your fans. And the fans have not only noticed, but we immensely appreciate all the work and time you've put into con appearances up to this point. You really owe it to yourself to do what's best for YOU right now :) And while many of us don't know you personally, and might not get to see you on the con scene as much in the future, we'll still be here to cheer you on.

So take care of yourself :)

Hey Greg,
All of us will miss you so much, but you NEED a break. It was awesome of you to explain a list of reasons for us all, but I think your past experiences speak for itself. You being a fan of you work has always been one of the big reasons why I am such a fan of you and it rocks that your one of those people in life that understands the fan’s POV.

As far as money goes I think we can ALL understand that.

I’m so glad to hear that you will get more time with friends and family. I know without them in my life I would go insane. Its time they see you again. God knows we anime fans have been hogging you for too long.

I know what you mean with the haters concept. A while back I was joking with a friend about making a shirt that says “I am a people person…these are my people” and only wearing it at cons. Meeting awesome people and not needing to feel like you need a boiler room to break the ice has always been one of my fav. parts about cons. Its sad that is starting to go away.

I can’t wait to hear about this new business of yours. I hope it involves music because I know how much you enjoy that, but whatever it is I wish you the best of luck.

All in all, I along with all your other fans support you. Sadly I am a newer generation fan so I haven’t gotten a chance to meet you yet, so I will cross my fingers that you will be at anime boston 09, but if not I understand and I will have to save up the money to buy a ticket to Texas. You traveled to see us, so if I have to I will travel to see you.

Best of luck with everything Greg.

Wow, you know I keep hearing tid bits of rumors about cons not being so great for the guests of honor, but you really put it into perspective about just what happens at cons, whether it be the VA panels and such or on the fans side.

I recently went to my first con with my niece and we had a blast just absorbing all the cool cosplayers, and everything you could actually do at the cons. I'm glad you're taking some time for personal reasons since friends and family are always priority. It's a shame that not all VA's and other professionals in your industry think like you do, and enjoy it as much as you do.
It's that kind of excitement and enthusiasm that makes me a huge fan of yours :)

You are by far one of the coolest dudes in the industry!!

You know something's wrong when you have to carry Mace to a con. I've had to bring it to Acen...when some of those guys get a tad too friendly, you have to check 'em. Especially with the layout - you know, the skyways from the convention center to the garage. They never have any form of security there....even late at night.

I'm kinda glad to hear youi say this tho i must say it will be kind of sad to not see you at Oni-con( if you don't go) I've always thought in the back of my mind that of all the voice actors that deserve to be paid, you and your brother deserve it the most. i've been to a lot of the conventions and have worked most of all of them and when you say its starting to feel like a job.. i can completely understand. your a guest and it should never feel like work you guest. hell it should feel like work to anyone that isn't getting paid.. and that's a LOt of people. I also understand about you being sick of poorly ran conventions and haters. it's because of poorly ran conventions that i only volunteer at certain cons now (maybe 1 or 2 a year). i don't focus to much on the haters tho. if they think they con do a better job or have better i ideas then they should volunteer. anyways enjoy your rest and if you change your mind about charging to be there i personally wouldn't mind paying it at all. how many other voice actors can dj and entertain and is all around people person.

I've always wondered how you handled going to so many conventions in a year. I keep an eye on you, (not in a stalker-ish way) and it seems that as soon as you get settled at home you have to pack up and head right and out again for another con. As much as I like to travel and go to cons, I think I would have been tired of it all long ago.

I want to say kudos to you for finally putting your foot down and cutting back on the cons. You deserve a long needed break, and your family and friends more than deserve more time with you. Also, good luck on the business. If you ever need anyone to talk to I am here for you.

Oh and if need be, I will go to a Texas con just to have a few drinks with you. Sorry if the whole "eye on you" thing sounded creepy and stalker-ish, I am much too broke to stalk someone around the country.

You and your brother give more of yourselves than I thought was possible of a guest of honor at any sort of convention--I just about flipped when your bro sat down at my table at one of the events and just started in talking like we hadn't met only three days before, then watched you doing the exact same thing on another side of the room, while other guests did the same.
I was floored, by the two of you and the other outstanding individuals who guested at AD '08--I expected to SEE the guests perhaps, but to have one SIT DOWN with my friends and I? Wow!

And if this is how you treat everyone at every convention you go to, you most assuredly DO need a break! It's one thing to give of yourself when it's returned by those around you, but to leave on Sunday or Monday feeling sucked dry and sick of it all? Not fair to you and I am so sorry to even think you may have been treated that way, either of you.

You need to do what you need to do for yourself--then work from there to find the happy medium that doesn't add up to a killer schedule. Do some pampering, some work that pays, and some unwinding in general, and maybe someday conventions will be fun instead of work. I've been blessed with being able to do what I love and get paid for it too, but there are times where it's a major grind as well during the busy seasons or when I have a heavy show schedule, so I feel for you and hope that the break helps.

I'd give 20 kudos if I could, but you'll have to settle for 2 :)

While it saddened my heart yesterday to read this, I understand why you are cutting waaaaaaaay way back. You do need to take care of yourself too.

But I've noticed this as well. I won't ramble off the cons that claim they're really great and everything goes perfect but I personally think the things that are just as important don't go as smooth [though all cons are not perfect; I know]. I do leave feedback but it generally gets thrown back in my face by the staff with mediocore replies. >.
<

And the bullying is just f**king retarded. They bury the needle in the f*cktard-o-meter along with the douchebags that have the t*ts to show up at this con and poke fun at people. And it's not just the con-goers. I've seen a couple of dealers be real douchebags to the con-goers which probably doesn't add a positive out-look to the experience if they're first timers.

**heavy sigh** Unfortunately stupidity is one thing people never outgrow. Did you ever contact that one con to be reimbursed? Did they flat out tell you "no" or not bother to reply? The douchebag that caused your injury needs to stand up and at least pay his dues for causing you bodily harm. That's not right [in my eyes anyways].

On broken ribs...

In fairness to the accident with my ribs. The person responsible for the broken ribs totally DID NOT mean to do it. It was just an accident. I have never been mad at him...I just thought that the convention it happened at could have stepped up and offered to help out with the bills. That's why conventions have insurance. I lost two days of work because of it.... and had to attend the next 4 conventions (and DJ) with 4 broken ribs and in a lot of pain because of it.

I didn't want anyone to think that I was blaming the person who did it...I think the convention itself (especially considering the size of that convention, and the money they had laid out on PAID media guests) could have done a little more to fix the situation

I completely understand. I know I don't go to nearly as many conventions, nor have I been going as long as you, but I have noticed certain things. I think a lot more focus needs to be placed on Quality and not quantity of conventions around. I have noticed the change in attitude people have at conventions, and I admit when I first started going they were fun. Now I don't find them as fun to attend as I used to due to people and how they act.

I hope everything with the business goes well next year, and I'll see you around at a convention or two.

I hope that MTAC hasn't been added to the never again list, but I wouldn't blame you if it was. I enjoyed your panel this year about fansubbing and the effect on the industry, even though I had to leave about halfway through (unfortunately). I'm sorry you had to deal with some of the ruder crowds, they seem to be everywhere these days.

You may be happy to know that in an effort to help prevent pirating, MTAC has enforced a new no fan art policy on its artist's alley. Honestly, I fear the effect it will have on the artists as fan art is the 1 revenue for them. At the same time I hope that more cons will do what they can to raise awareness of the issue and take preventative measures against it.

If you do decide to come to MTAC, stop by my table in Artist's Alley. I plan on making some anti-downloading propoganda type posters to hand out with each commission. Just the little bit I can do in order to do my part as a manga artist.

Well, I think you need this as well, its ur time, you need it. All I can say, is thank you for the past few times I have seen you and talked to you, though the conversations were short, mostly because I hate to take up ppls time, I am greatful and appreciate everything you do for us. I hope you are still able to attend Anime Boston. If not, maybe some day I will be able to venture to a different con and say hi.

It's been like 3 years since I've been to a convention and maybe even longer since I talked with you last, but back then you were not only one of the hardest working guests, you were also one of the most gracious with the fans and his time. I bet that's not changed. If anyone deserves a break, you do.

I look back at a long time ago, and feel like an idiot and embarrassed for a lot of things. You always treated me nicely despite me being an awkward kid. Any kind of problems I ever caused you, I apologize for... That's the least I can do. Take care.

Hey Greg! Good to hear you are taking some time for yourself and friends and family! Too many times people today forget what is important. Although I will miss hanging and talking shop with you at Metro, I may be able to work something out on the corp side on this end to help sway your deciding to come visit? I have since last year cought the eye of our corp office and have been approached to give a larger game plan to the marketing dept. I have a lot on the table for this year and more store want to be involved, so it is exciting on this side. As far as I know, we are still the only brand name company backing a con? But it seems corp wants me to put together a game plan for other cons in the country? No worries, I am gonna be sure to put Texas in the mix. Shoot me an email so I can tell you all the new things we are looking to sponsor in the future cons. Hint, I am getting approval to bring in a VA (paid) strictly for our booth for autograph signings.
Well, gotta get, best of luck on the new business too!!

After everything YOU'VE been doing, you have most definitely earned a break. Sometimes, you just have to put yourself before others- we all understand. ^-^ And let's hope the anime convention world starts turning around (coming from a con-newbie...just had my first one about two months ago)...
Good luck with your soon-to-be business! Hope all goes well with that! :)

Wait? Did you say that some guests actually charge money for their autograph? I'm sorry, I'm just trying to wrap my head around that, I wouldn't pay a cent for an autograph in a million years. I keep my autographs as my sort of "Otaku Picture Album" for when I'm old and getting memory loss, I can remember all the nice voice actors I met. Out of all my autographs which at this point I've lost count of I haven't paid for any, and all of them were from face-to-face meeting.
