Furburger - Magazine Reviews

What's in a name? Everything, according to the folk behind GHQ's lesbian night Furburger. The night is aimed at "girls who like girls who like music," and is as loud, brash and obvious as the name suggests. Since a re-launch in June, the night has become popular with a young, hip crowd with its melee of musical styles, ranging from electro and hip-hop to classic pop, rock and indie, provided by DJs Boy Toy, Debi T, The Funki Diva and Dejaybird. With a focus on the music and the main target being women rather than men, Furburger is definitely a strong alternative to the saturated mainstream gay scene. Although aimed at a girly crowd, you're allowed to bring a man with you - all that they ask is that you "wear good shoes and bring beautiful people"; and if everyone does, it's certainly going to be a winner.

The girls your mother warned you about are really cranking things up a notch and expanding west, following huge success in Edinburgh.

Glasgow is in for a treat as the club night takes residence in the city's brand spanking new lesbian bar FHQ.

Don't fret, Glasgow won't be getting all of the action. Furburger (East Side) will be continuing with their infamous aural stimulation on the second Friday of every month.

For a long time Edinburgh had only one option for lesbians of any age - Velvet, once a month, out in Leith. Thankfully last year Furburger burst onto the scene with an attitude as uncompromising as its name, offering another option for a younger lesbian market. The cosy Cocteau Lounge downstairs at Ego provides an ideal venue with ample seating, and it soon fills with stylish, spiky-haired, self-assured females. Among them are a surprising number of blokes, but these are only allowed in with a girl companion, which keeps the balance and keeps out straight knuckle-draggers seeking an FHM inspired fantasy. Taking advantage of the fact lesbian music taste hasn't yet been forced into a stereotype, Dejay Bird, the Funki Diva and their guests spin an impressive and imaginative variety of tunes. As the music switches from RnB and hip-hop to Cheese, Indie rock and then dance, the crowd soon disprove the old prejudice that 'dykes can't dance'. No surprise that Furburger is getting busier each month, and now has its own pre-club at Planet Out. Furburger is not just a positive addition to the scene for a long neglected market, but rather by any standards it's a great night out.

Clublife for lady-loving ladies in Edinburgh has been rejuvenated of late, with a change of DJs for both monthly nights Velvet and Fur Burger, a change of venue for the latter, and the addition of regular live performances and a pre-club event across the road at Bar Sirius for the former.

Fur Burger now resides in the basement club of Twist, which itself has had a makeover in the style bar mould after a long spell as gritty men's den, the Newtown Bar. The redecoration and lesbi-residency (with record players Dejaybird, the Funki Diva, Boy Toy and Debi Tits) has encouraged a pleasingly mixed-sex clientele in the bar, and the alcoved seating areas and dinky dancefloor downstairs are well-suited to a night where chatting is as important as a boogie. Caroline Crozier, aka the Funki Diva, is pleased with the move. 'It's a more intimate venue, and it's a Friday night as well. I know the dancefloor's small, but it's nice; you've got the cosy little caves that people can go and chill out in, so it's sociable.'

Lock up your daughters the Furburger bitches are back!

It is hard to believe that 3 years has past since the ladies (I use that term lightly) of Furburger first descended upon Edinburgh to bring you one of the best club nights in town. Furburger started off in Ego on a Thursday night but decided a weekend night would be better so moved to the Newtown bar.  Well they now have a fabulous new home once a month at FHQ and no that isn't a typo (for once) FHQ is a new area at GHQ/Piccardy place just for the girls, but more on FHQ if they actually send us some information, although with my best pal Leah on the door it is never hard to find out the gossip at GHQ. Anyway back to Furburger....

The music policy as ever will be eclectic with DJ's The Funki Diva, dejaybird and also regular guests such as Debi T and Toyboy who have been with Furburger since it started. The music will be a brilliant mix of Hip Hop, RNB, soul, reggae, indie, dance, pop, funk and everything else in between. Furburger is all about entertaining girls that like girls (or maybe girls that are wanting to like girls) and it is about going out, letting your hair down (ok in this case spiking it up) and getting down and dirty on the dance floor.

Word just in is that they might have an all female bar staff so you can even have eye candy on the bar. QS would like to wish all the team at furburger all the very best in it's new home and we hope it is one that will last for a very long time. QS was just going to print before the great night,so we thought we should show you some of the sexy girls of past events. Next month we will have a full review of the new night.

Furburger will be once a month, with the launch night on Friday 13th at GHQ/FHQ

Club - Furburger, Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a late night city, I'm told. Quite why is another question, for another place. So, despite having been out for a meal and going to a gig, I'm still amongst the first to arrive at the city's only (ONLY!!) nightclub space devoted to girls seeking girls (Club Velvet is postponed indefinitely). And it's only once a month! OK, so I'm a Londoner and I was just visiting. What do I know, I'm spoilt for choice, apparently. However, this is the capital of Scotland (I'd been past the Parliament building twice that day), there's a large student population and vast numbers of bars and clubs in the city centre. But let us look to the positive...

'Wear good shoes, bring beautiful people', it says on the flyer. A fine idea, and when I step inside GHQ, Furburger's home turf, I understand why. Fabulous! I could even say fabulous, darling! All hyperbole intended, it really is quite stunning. The owner has a string of beautifully appointed nightclubs in Scotland. Indeed, Furburger appears monthly at another of his venues, FHQ, in Glasgow. One room, then another and I've finally arrived at the Dance Bar, the 'backroom' that houses the girlie action. I am led past a row of six, no seven white leather divans, partially obscured by long black fringing, for public decency I imagine. And here we are, in a large black room decorated with coloured flourescent tubes on the walls and ceiling. I marvel at it all, in a good way, as I'm so used to seedy basements. Thank you for making the effort. And, yes, we do deserve it.

The place filled up quite quickly. The crowd was fairly young and well dressed. Although that was probably down to the door policy. I wore good jeans and nice shoes and was amongst the less dressed-up (a first for me, actually). Lots of couples and groups of couples. The usual array of dancers, drinkers and students. The music was 'the usual' as well and the crowd were perfectly happy with that. As there seemed to be free circulation between Furburger and the rest of GHQ, lots of boys started to come in and take over the dancefloor. I'd be lying if I said they weren't better dancers (why is that?). Towards the final hour it all became more interesting, musically speaking. There was much singing along to Blondie, Joan Jett and, when I was too tired to stay any longer, Amy Winehouse. Proper girls music, as it should be.

In conclusion, it wasn't a bad evening at all. There are clearly a lot of women staying home, needlessly. An opportunity to dress up and go out somewhere beautiful should be enough. That all tribes are welcome, present and correct is over egging the pudding! Where were you?
