There are as many truths as there are people.
-Character from "The Savage Detectives"
Written By Roberto Bolaño Ávalos

I remember one time as a student ( I can't remember what year, grade, or school, but the moment is clear to me never the less). I had written a paper, a review, or even a summary of something we read or saw.

We were being graded on this of course, and the teacher called me up to her desk to say how well I had written my report. I was surprised by her reaction and I said, Really?, but it reads just like a newspaper article. She was all too quick to respond in her hoarse, smoke-too-much-future-hole-in-my-throat voice, That's what makes it so good. That's when just like a ton of regurgitated cesspool liquid raining on me she said, that's how a paper should be written.

I don't know why but it made me dizzy, maybe from shear rage, that she would would compare me to a mainstream feed-em-information-crap-out-text writers. Then she smiled and only to make me sick to my core. I wanted to knock out every last one of those crooked jigsaw puzzle pieces she called teeth.

After what seemed to be a life-time standing at her desk, all I could manage to do was smile politely, say thank you, pretend to be embarrassed by her praise, and swallow my tongue. I knew what I wanted to say, but saying it was different. I guess in the end I was no better than those spineless cut and paste writers I despised so much. I really do hate that kind of writing though and I was angry with myself for not picking that fight and telling her how wrong she was about praising that kind of writer. The kind that gives up their integrity and artistry for the the sake of filling a void within the void that is the mainstream media.

From that point on I knew I would never follow suit. I knew every fiber in my body would always try it's damn best to not be swallowed whole by what was easy and safe. Live like there's a tiger waiting for you to slip and fall into it's pit, so that when you do fuck up you'll always be sure to try that much more never to fuck up again.
