I want to take a moment to give you all a brief overview about animal rights, and get your thoughts and opinions.  I know there is a lot of information here, and I'm sorry I couldn't find a way to condense it, but please read it all, or as much as you can, or at least please skim through it.

Also, some of this may be difficult to read and learn about, but by saying "I don't want to know about this...it's too horrible", this attitude just perpetuates the problem.  Ignorance may be bliss for you, but not for the animals.  Educate yourself, no matter how difficult it may be, so that you can make decisions in your life that won't cause you to unintentionally promote cruelty towards animals, and so that you may educate others.

I personally believe that all animals have certain rights: the right to exist peacefully, as nature intended, and free from harm or exploitation at the hands of humans.  I also believe that all animals have the right to live comfortably, free of pain, and free of emotional distress caused by humans.

There are four areas where I feel humans cause the most harm to animals: the meat industry, the fur and leather industry, animal testing by cosmetic companies and the medical industry, and entertainment industries, such as the circus and the rodeo, that use animals as "entertainment".  I will explain each one.

THE MEAT INDUSTRY:

I do not eat meat.  The one area where my opinion differs from other animal rights activists is that I DO believe that nature intended for humans to eat animals.  However, the reason that I do not eat meat is because I do not support factory farming.  "Factory farming" is where the vast majority of meat you eat - in grocery stores and in restaurants - comes from.  Animal are basically kept in a warehouse.  Chickens and pigs are either jam-packed into sheds, or they are kept in tiny cramped crates and cages so small they can't even turn around or lie down comfortably.  They are often sick, forced to stand in their own urine and feces, have no proper ventilation, and are often beaten when the frightened animals don't "cooperate" when being moved from one place to another.  (To learn more, visit www.MeetYourMeat.org)

LEATHER AND FUR:

I also do not wear fur or leather.  Animals on fur farms spend their lives in tiny cages only to be killed by anal or genital electrocution, which causes them to have a heart attack.  Some are skinned alive.  Animals in the wild may languish for days in traps before they die of thirst or starvation, or are killed by the trapper.  (For more information, please visit www.FurIsDead.com)  I don't wear leather because of the cruel treatment that cows are subjected to while being "raised", as well as being transported to slaughterhouses, as well as the slaughterhouse process itself.  (Visit www.CowsAreCool.com)

ANIMAL TESTING:

Animals, such as monkeys, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, DOGS, and CATS, are mutilated and killed by the millions (yes, millions!) every year, in excruciatingly painful experiments done by the companies that create cosmetics and household products, as well as the medical industry.  Testing on animals for cosmetics and household products is no longer necessary because more reliable and humane alternatives do exist.  Plus, lists already exist of chemicals that are and are not dangerous to humans, which are accessible to companies.  Furthermore, there are no laws that require companies to test their products on animals.  Find out which companies do and do not test on animals, so that you can purchase the ones that don't, and boycott the ones that do.  (Go to www.CaringConsumer.com/resources_companies.asp)  As for testing on animals for medical purposes, because humans and animals are so physiologically different, this has caused many animal drug tests to be unreliable and dangerous.  Many drugs have harmed and even killed humans, because animal tests deemed them to be "safe".  In addition, new research methods, such as computer models, cell cultures, and human studies are more accurate, less expensive, and much more humane than testing on animals. (To learn more, go to www.aavs.org)

USING ANIMALS FOR "ENTERTAINMENT":

Circuses such as Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus, and establishments such as the rodeo, are cruel to animals.  Animals in the circus don't want to ride bicycles, stand on their heads, balance on balls, or jump through rings of fire.  Animals in the rodeo don't want to be chased and tackled, or be forced to buck while some guy on their back flails around and kicks them repeatedly with sharp spurs.  Sadly, these animals have no choice.  Trainers use abusive tools, like whips and electric prods, and force them to perform.  When they are not performing, they are forced to stand in cramped stalls and cages with no room to walk, for hours and hours, until boredom and lack of exercise drives them to the point of behaving neurotically. (Learn more: visit www.Circuses.com  and  www.BuckTheRodeo.com)

Believe it or not, but this is just the tip of the iceburg, when it come to cruelty towards animals.  There are too many other issues than I can talk about here in this blog, so please go online and type in "animal rights" into your search engine, and learn as much as you can.  Things like writing letters to companies and politicians, joining boycotts, and educating  your friends and families about cruelty towards animals are the first steps that you can take towards helping to end this horrific problem.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks,

Lacey

i feel the same exact way as u do....
wen i try explaining to ppl the reasons such as these which contribute to my lifestyle choices, (such as not eating meat, making sure that i dont use products from companies which use animall testing, and not wearing fur or leather)...no one understands...
i think it is extremely important to get this kind of information out to the masses, and hopefully get ppl to realize the horror that these poor animals must must endure...
i think that what u are doin is amazing Lacey....

Lacey i fully agree. I am huge on animal rights. I meet alot of people who are like "I can't handle seeing the photos of animals suffering so I can't get involved..." I agree thats an issue. No one likes to see an animal suffer....but we HAVE to get involved like you say. Thanks so much for putting up this page. The Rock of Love tv show will also help you to spread the word too! Thanks for being a Guardian Angel for all our fluffy friends.

I agree with everything you have stated here and I also would like to commend your efforts on behalf of all animals.

There is so much more cruelty that goes on in the world we forget that some of the solutions ARE in our power to stop.

Thank you for the thoughts and please keep it going.

I read the whole thing word for word and I pretty much agree with everything you've said

Animals are one of the other things left in the world that give us love and all of themselves. Why we are testing our cosmetics on them, skinning them alive to wear tacky clothing and entertaining ourselves by putting them in rodeos and circus'

You really present your thoughts very clearly and not threatening. You definetely could convince people of the importance of animal rights

While I am an animal rights activist I do believe that certain animals were meant to be consumed by humans. I do though agree that the treatment these animals receive prior to their becoming our favorite food dish borders on sadism.

My main focal point as an activist has always been centralized on the abuse and mistreatment of companion animals. This area of activism covers those animals that were purposely domesticated to the point of dependency upon humans that are now being abused, abandoned, exploited, and even murdered by the very same human race that once took them out of their own natural habitat to be our loving companions. I have done volunteer work at several no kill animal shelters and it is sad to see the lives these animals led prior to being saved. Some of them were so feral due to neglect or abuse that the local animal shelters placed these animals upon their red list simply because they were scared to death of humans. These poor misunderstood animals are often times thought to be "unsocialable" and therefore are seen to be unfit companions for people and doomed to the death chamber but I personally think that they should send the humans that are responsible to the death chamber instead. The worse part is that I have many times proven that feral animals can eventually be re-socialized with proper care and love. When I volunteered with a no kill animal shelter in New Orleans, re-socializing these misunderstood creatures was my personal area of expertise.

I am especially passionate about the rights of Pitbulls and other dog breeds that are exploited for their ability to be fierce protectors. Do you know that in some states it is illegal to even own a Pitbull and in these states and even in other states where owning a Pitbull has not yet been criminalized Pitbulls that are brought into local humane shelters are automatically eradicated based simply upon their breed alone? Take for example the most recent scandal involving Pitbull fighting. I am sure I don't need to drop any names and that everyone reading this will know exactly who I am talking about, but I bet that atleast half of you do not know what happened to the animals involved and frankly I am willing to bet that most of the people who have religiously followed the news stories about this scandal don't even care. Unfortunately as fighter dogs these animals are believed to be dangerous to society and will likely be killed. There will be no effort to re-socialize these animals as those with the authority to decide their future fate believe that it is not possible to do so, but as one who has actually worked with this breed on a very personal level I have to disagree with their opinion. There is no such thing as a bad dog, there are only bad owners and with the correct handling many dogs like these can be turned into wonderful pets despite the misfortune of their prior circumstances. Luckily they do have organizations available that try to find foster parents with experience with Pitbulls and other supposedly malicious breeds that are willing to take the time and effort to re-socialize these types of animals but they are still too few and far between. Most are operated by animal lovers who are just normal every day people with really big hearts, alot of patience, and maybe a little extra room in their homes, but unfortunately the size of their pocket books do not match the size of their hearts. So if you ever find yourself seeking to donate money or volunteer some time to a worthy animal cause do some research and try to locate a local no-kill animal shelter instead of choosing more commonly known animal programs like the humane society.

We appreciate you taking a stand on animal rights. We've seen these videos of the abuse animals go through. It's horrific to watch them get tortured and killed for fur, food, and testing. It's sickening and heart-wrenching.

Thank you for what you do, Lacey.

I Agree Completely! Exspecially About Using Animals For Entertainment When I Was Little My Mom Said I Never Wanted To Go To The Circus Beacause The Trainers Where Always So Mean To The Animals. Animal Testing Has Always Upset Me Recently I Heard About The Iams Testing On Animals I Made A Bulletin About It, To Me That Was The Worst Thing Possible Beacause They "Love Animals" So Much And Wanted To Improve They're Food By Giving Dogs And Cats Diseases' And Testing It. Leather And Fur I HAved Never Wanted To Wear It I Cannot Stand Ignorrant People [[Such As Dallas]] That Wear That Stuff And Flaunt It Just To Piss Everyone Else Off! I Am Really Glad You Added Me Because We Share Our Beliefs About Animals. Thanks!

I love what your doing Lacey!! I'm only 14 years old (turning 15 soon) and I feel like I can't do anything to help animals. Animals have always had a soft spot in my heart, and I would love to someday do what you do. If you could find the time to write me back with your advice on how to start something at my school (I already tried starting an Animal Rights Club but it apparently never made it to the principle or some bullshit, they apparently have time for an Anime Club which is alot more important than Animal Rights apparently...) or start something in my community.

Thanks soo much Lacey!!!!!!!!!!! Your really inspirational!!! I hope you can someday make your rescue agency across the country, not just in southern California.

Thanks again!!

Stephen

Hey, Lacey. I really like this blog. I think you are right-on and really admire all the effort you put into animal rights.

Why is it that you believe that nature intended for us to eat animals, though? There is overwhelming evidence to support otherwise, so I'm just curious why you believe that.

Peace,
Katie

I am so glad that your popularity from Rock of Love is helping you to more effectively spread awareness of animal cruelty.

I always said that if I had the resources available, I would start an animal rescue group in FL. Maybe someday I'll get lucky.

You truly are a hero!
