I keep hearing everyone speak about a post racial reality. It is an interesting set of words. The idea being that somehow the election of a black man to the presidency of the united states erases the history of racism because we are now in a new era. Who would benefit from a post racial reality? Is race the problem? Maybe the problem is racism not race!
Here is what I mean! I like being black! Maybe that is shocking to many people! I absolutely love the evolving culture that is blackness. I dig the idea of being a musical descendant of Miriam Makeba and Bob Marley. Two black people who chose to point us towards the richness of our collective history in Africa. So, I don't want a post racial reality.
What I would like is a post-RACIST reality. Take a look at that Post-racial and Post-RACIST. They sound similar but those couple of  letters make a world of difference:
1) A post racial society is one where everyone pretends that race does not exist and that the history of slavery is a bother to talk about, old news, old hat and out of style like bell bottoms.

2) A post racist society is one where all the institutions set up to block equality are brought down. No more high schools named after famous politicians who owned slaves and sold their own children into slavery (Thomas Jefferson). No more senators who are former KKK members:

No more drug laws that are racially motivated to place young black men in prison. Infact! No more prisons!
                                POST RACIST NOT POST RACIAL!

The election of Obama is a great day. It does show that America has made progress. But I do agree with your thoughts on a post racial society. It is just ingnorant to think or act like Race doesnt exist. Clearly we notice one another, we notice the color of our skin, and those differences will presumably always be there.

However a post Racist society can exist, one where people dont immediately think one thing just because the color of someone skin. Where people people safe. Where people have friends that are both white, brown, and black.

But let me take this one step further. In America today possibly we have cleared the racial barrier to some extent. However there is a culture clash that is out there. There are people that wanted to claim that Obama was a (oh my god) a MUSLIM (as that would matter). Hopefully religious difference will one day make the step that racial differnces have made recently. Not that they dont or wont exist. But we can all agree, all that matters is helping one another.

much love

Although I am happy to see Obama elected to the Presidency...all the talk about "post" anything is bullshit until there is clear and convincing evidence that we all share equally in the so called American dream.

Oh...it's wonderful...a huge accomplishment and step in the right direction...even got me "feeling" like an American for the first time...but it's really going to be a beautiful day when we are all treated with the same dignity and respect as a President....as a citizen...as the Constitution requires.

Love you Brothah fa keepin' it real...and I still wear my bell bottoms...they just call them "flare bottoms" now.

I hear and agree. The fact that the entire world was so intently paying attention to our election says mounds...as do the tears, the smiles the hugs and speeches made directly after...what must be addressed is how our scales must be balanced in this world and our place in it must be re-established in a positive light due to the lingering effects of raCISM. We have an arguably long way to go. I applaud you for sharing how you feel.

An old friend once told me that the concept of black concsiousness is itself outdated. He said that it was now time to look at human consciousness. This may well apply to the post racial reality which we are now faced with.

Almost all the people who say that black consciousness is outdated have never lived in Africa. Go to Ghana and experience a country full of black people where Jesus is everywhere white. It will show you that black consciousness is needed. Go into the prisons of America and you will see that it is needed. We need to know why it is that we get singled out for the bottom of the barrel.

And now, folks are acting surprised that my black president is not all of a sudden eradicating years and years of political damage set up and consistently perpetuated within a country that cares nothing about him; no matter what "title" they give him. First of all, he is a man. He does not have magical powers that can somehow reverse inequality that has been BUILT INTO the fabric of how this entire operation works. I comment him, he's a great man, and I think he has and will continue to bring about change. But we should not be fooled by this guise. Just because he is the president doesn't mean he is not a pawn, not a device to blind and distract us to larger harm being planned against us. As a general rule in the universe, things get worse before they get better. I think this country (aka white people) are waging war, for real. And Obama is their secret weapon. Black people wake up! Good people wake up! But in the meantime, let's celebrate our victory, no matter how small or incomplete-we do have the universe on our side. Yes we can.
