Some of you are familiar with last years Op-Ed in the LA Times

Click here: Rapists In the Ranks Article

Rep. Jane Harman, D-California, "My jaw dropped when the doctors told me that 41% of female veterans seen at the clinic say they were victims of sexual assault while in the military, and 29% report being raped during their military service".

Well, the Pentagon said the latest reports of rape in the military by fellow soldiers are up by 8% and they said no more than 20% of these attacks are actually reported.
Few are taken to court marshal for prosecution.
There really isn't any media pressure on the Dept of Defense or the White House for urgent action or transparency, most people are completely unaware this is even a problem because it gets so little coverage.

Yep, these are the men leading our country. Not all of them of course but almost EVERY female I know that has been in the military has been raped or sexually assaulted in 1 way or another. It is really sad.

Well, how can it go one like this? Consider. Native Americans are still invisible in our culture. They still don't have their land and every single treaty the government made with them has been broken by tthe govt..

Isn't it amazing that while they are fighting to protect these mens right they are being raped. I am ex military and the things I have seen just in basic alone are sometimes horrific. This may also be a cause why the suicide rate for military personal is high. But if you ask the Sergeants and Generals they mostly say its just rumors. Well I hope that everyone knows that this is why women in the arm forces are the strongest and bravest women to me.

And western men are "better" than say, Islamic men. I'm not so sure. I was a military wife, long ago. My husband locked me in my 6 month old's bedroom for two weeks and raped me every day. That was when I was leaving him because he hit me alot and was verbally horrid. In those days it was thought a husband couldnt rape his wife. Oh, I mean! NOW it's is still thought that a husband couldn't rape his wife.

My daughter's very first sexual encounter was rape by a fellow she knew from school. One couldn't touch her, like to hug her, for years after that.

I think you made a very smart choice not to put yourself in a Russian Roulette situation. The amount of rapes occurring and the extent the military has gone to in covering them up and the suspicious deaths are definitely "jaw dropping". Don't let anyone try to talk you into thinking you didn't make the right decision because it is obvious you did. We need to stay informed and make smart informed choices to not put ourselves in dangerous environments and establishments that are plainly hostile towards women. Only 72 court marshals out thousands of reports and they only get "dismissed" if found guilty? I wouldn't encourage anyone female in my family to join the military.

Cass, I am sure there are several reason you chose not to join the service. But if this is the ONLY reason, I want to tell you not to live your life in fear.
You can't hold yourself back from doing things you want just because something bad might happen to you.

I joined the AF at 18 and it was the best thing I ever did. And sure I met a lot of creeps, but I also made some really great friends out of it, male and female.
Thankfully, I was never raped or in any other way ever taken advantage of...and I did know one girl who was. I'm sure her time was horrible, but she chose to do things that put her at risk and in the end, no one believed her. Now, of course I was on her side because girls should always defend other girls, but nothing happened with it. She was just PCS'd to another base/job.

Now that's awful and horrid, but for my own experience, I LOVED the military and I had a great time and it was an awesome opportunity.

I did a whole lot of therapy with people great and not so great during a ten year period in my 40's. It did me a WHOLE lot of good, because, of course, all the bad stuff that happened infused my whole life. PTSD, I think it has to do with making me succeptable to those that would abuse me. I still have to climb out from under. But I am no longer an in visible train wreck. I hope you can do something to aleviate, otherwise you whole life is poisoned.

As a soldier and veteran myself, I must say that rape isnt the only problem towards us the females. There is sexism, sexual harrasmant, physical, mental and emotional abuse. And many time if the female decides to report it, the chain of command will ask what did u do about it, or what u want us to do.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I live in Australia, and haven't heard anything of this nature about our defence forces but I can imagine as long as there are men out there who will perform this atrocious act, I believe there will be victims wherever you go. My partner aspires to an Army career and will likely continue it later, and now I know this about the US Army, I will certainly be cautious, and warning her of the potential danger, she has been through more than enough at the hands of men as it is.

Did you hear about Pfc Lavena Johnson?

The photographs revealed that Lavena, a small woman, barely 5 feet tall and weighing less than 100 pounds, had been struck in the face with a blunt instrument, perhaps a weapon stock. Her nose was broken and her teeth knocked backwards. One elbow was distended. The back of her clothes had debris on them indicating she had been dragged from one location to another. The photographs of her disrobed body showed bruises, scratch marks and teeth imprints on the upper part of her body. The right side of her back as well as her right hand had been burned apparently from a flammable liquid poured on her and then lighted. The photographs of her genital area revealed massive bruising and lacerations. A corrosive liquid had been poured into her genital area, probably to destroy DNA evidence of sexual assault.

Despite the bruises, scratches, teeth imprints and burns on her body, Lavena was found completely dressed in the burning tent. There was a blood trail from outside a contractor’s tent to inside the tent. She apparently had been dressed after the attack and her attacker placed her body into the tent and set it on fire.

After all of this the military ruled her death a suicide but the evidence showed she was clearly raped and murdered.

I don't believe women should be around the men and I feel we shouldn't allow criminals in the military. Rapist in the military should face the firing squad after proving they were guilty. As far as im concerned no one should be joining for money or better education they are there to fight for their country nothing more. I expect strong individuals who are willing to die to do what they are asked not spend their time screwing locals or raping their comrades. Things are done in a way that what happens in the military stays in the military and is not the business of the civilians. People would freak if they knew what really goes on in the military but the government feels it's not our business war isn't pretty and the Geneva Convention crap only applies to those who get caught. Scum is scum regardless of their uniform and flag.

While I understand that you think separating women from men would keep them safe, it would only allow for much worse discrimination.
With that statement, you'd limit women's job opportunities and advancement in the military.

Things wont change because people complain about it thats the way things are I don't agree with it but unless people can be severely punished and people willing to step forward with the issue nothing will ever be done. I feel women have no place in the military simply because it's not safe for them and it can't be guaranteed. Anyone who joins better be ready to deal with it people I know told me they were tortured during their training some people flipped out one told me a guy tried to knife his commanding officer. The military is full of people who don't belong there thats just a fact of the matter and the government doesn't care what happens to you as long as you keep your mouth shut. Your there to do what your told they own your ass don't make waves. My view is don't join I don't care what your reasons are don't do it.

This is disturbing, but it's nothing new. It happened to me, thirty years ago, while in service on active
duty in the US Navy. I attended one of the first PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) group sessions
that the VA set up for women. There were 15 women in my group, ranging in service periods from
WWII/Korea, to present. Now, multiply THAT by THREE different groups of women/sessions in a given day. 45 different women, per day, times 5x a week, and you begin to get the picture. And that was
ONE single VA facility. When you consider that the majority of cases are never reported, or as in my
case, less than enthusiastically-pursued to courts-martial or any sort of punishment/closure, it's truly
a horrifying number.
Women don't report for a number of reasons, the primary one being that it's your JOB you're in danger of losing; women get ostracized for reporting anything--for causing loss of morale, etc in the ranks. It's not right, by any stretch of the imagination. I reported the attacks against me, but because they occurred off-base, the Navy wouldn't prosecute beyond a most cursory investigation, and the civilian authorities would not pursue them because they involved two active-duty personnel. I did not know either of my rapists prior to the attacks--both were random, spaced a year apart but originating from the same base. Neither case was ever resolved. To my knowledge, both men escaped any sort of prosecution.
Until ALL women who suffer sexual assault/rape report the incidents, the Joint Chiefs can continue to
pass off any reported incidents as "anomalies" or "flukes" of combat situations. We must all stand as
one to truly effect any change. The overall attitude is slowly evolving, but as long as military service
is offered as an alternative to jail time (a common practice is to offer a felon military service in lieu
of hard time in regular prison), and those in command are allowed to "look the other way" when such
incidents occur, it will continue to be prevalent. Or, until they automatically issue every female
enlistee a .45 out of boot camp. THEN the incidents would drop off overnight...lol.
I applaud the Lesbian Mafia for bringing this heart-grieving situation to the fore, and I truly hope it
helps to lead to effective change in the system. Rapists often go free, but their victims never
escape a life sentence...
Good Work folks!!

Rape is so horrible. I just can't understand how a man could do that. To me, sex is only worth it when the girl ALLOWS you to touch her...even welcomes it because she likes you.
To force yourself on somebody is just so weak.

Looking at rape and how it happens (for example, most rapes are by someone you already know), it isn't really that shocking that there's a ton of rape in the military. First of all, guys outnumber girls like crazy. The girls trust the guys. The guys are lonely and depressed. It's all kind of like date rape. And it is also not shocking that most of these rapes go unreported. That's how it is all over the world. The girls feel shame, perceive their own actions as somehow invoking the rape, and they have to worry about saying something about it and alienating their other male servicemembers. They don't want to be singled out or ostracized for reporting what happened.
It's sad, but girls don't usually get the support they deserve when they report it. In reality, she would be punished for the incident and that would suck more than just living with it.

It's too bad. It sucks being a girl.

Wow. These young women are risking their lives to fight for our country, and they have to fight something much more personal to do so. Our daughters, wives and girlfriends are being objectified with the excuse that "they shouldn't be there". They have to rely on someone to protect their backs in combat when they can't rely on them to control themselves when not in active combat.

This is a sad...no, horrifying circumstance. Just because they are male they have the right to do what they wish with little fear of prosecution. But what do you want to bet that if it were the women raping the men, there would be a huge outcry and those women would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

How can you say "they aren't that bad of people" just because they decided to put their lives on the line to fight for American freedom? What freedom are they fighting for? The freedom to rape and dominate women? Obviously they have no respect for women and don't see us in the same EQUAL level as them. Most people in the military are NOT just risking their lives for our country. Some have a death wish. Don't care if they live or die but don't have the nerve to do anything about it except join the military. Or they live in a small town with no hope of a future unless they do join the military. It's a last resort. Or, they are POWER/CONTROL FREAKS (which I think this is the main reason). They want the title because they think it makes them better than everyone else and gives them the power and control to do whatever they want without consequence. And especially since we are at war, the good people aren't running to sign up. The military will take whatever they can get. I'm not saying ALL military people are messed up or horrible, but I definitely don't agree with you when you say they aren't bad people because they agreed to risk their lives for our country. Honestly, I think it's a horrible thing to say. It's like saying a husband who beats his wife is not that bad of a guy because at least he buys her everything and takes her to the hospital afterwards to mend her broken bones. One good deed does not cancel out a bad deed. And rape is about control. Not the act itself. The men don't feel empowered being themself. They need to display power in some way (rape, assault, etc) in order to feel strong... to feel like a "MAN." Really, they are nothing more than fu*ked up people with psychological issues who spread horrible violence and mental anguish because of their issues. And I say mental illness because after such an event, you are never the same again.

Sorry, just venting my opinion...
