The answer depends entirely on where you want to set your limits.
If you are easily satisfied with what you can already do, you probably don't need to know much more than you already know.
If you want to give Debussey a run for his money, hit the books.
Personally, I am still studying theory 30 years after college because I am still finding beautiful music under my fingers and in my ears that I just don't understand - though I'll have to admit that when I started transcribing a couple of years ago my ears really opened up.
Hey, I don't limit my study of history or engineering or cooking. Why would I not try to understand everything I possible can about the art for which I have such passion?
