Breast Fest 2009
The Appleby
BURTON-ON-TRENT
2nd October 2009

BORN TO DESTRUCT supporting  MISPELT{TWOPOINTZERO} and with SIX WEEKS FALLING

The bands 3rd gig in 7 days meant another schlep along the A14 and up the M42 by way of the M6 to the town of Burton-On-Trent to The Appleby to take part in Breast Fest 2009 a charity event kicking off on the Friday and carrying on over Saturday and Sunday. All monies raised over the weekend were going to both Breast Cancer Awareness and the Teenage Cancer Trust.

On arrival the band were greeted like returning prodigal children. The chap that turned out to be the sound guy couldn't contain his joy and excitement as he greeted the BTD crew. (Found out later that at one point they thought No one was going to be playing and so one of the Saturday bands had already said they would play the Friday instead so there would be at least one band!) So the arrival of MISPELT 2.0 and BORN TO DESTRUCT must have been a welcome relief!

After sound checking Woodstock, Kat Destruct, Dr Stu and Rich had a bit of time to chill out before things got underway at around 10pm.

Born To Destruct followed Six Weeks Falling and after a bit of a line check kicked off proceeding at about 11pm with WE BRING THE NOISE, the usual closer. Not the first time the band have done this but still caught my attention. I was a bit concerned whether this would work and what would they close the set out with and how would it change the balance of the set?

Having a decent sized audience to play to always helps and tonight saw another step in Kat Destruct's (VOCALS) development and progress as a performer having to deal with a very mixed crowd of Goths, Rockers, Bikers, Punks and general assorted others!

It takes a deal of confidence to stand in front of a band of men all the wrong side of 30 wearing bra's particularly when one is wearing his as a hat!

That aside WOODSTOCK (GUITAR & B/VOX & DD KAZOO) with his 40DD head wear had a great time making the most of the decent sound and treating us to rather tasty simply but meanigful guitar. The Demolition Maestro Rich (DRUMS & MAYHEM) behaved himself and only had a slight problem with the kit tonight. The good doctor Dr Stu (BASS & B/VOX) had one of his performances where a Few times he was to paraphrase the late great Eric Morecambe "playing the right notes but not necessarily in the right order". That sounds harsh and its not meant to be, the overall effect on the songs in question or the gig as a whole is never a devastating one, far from it, but it was there.

So to the set list:

WE BRING THE NOISE - the traditional set closer opening proceedings. Actually works well here and as some of the new material becomes more established in the set, no reason why it be used more often in this position, but it is a great closer especially with the amount of audience participation it can generate.
BOLLOCKS - still one of my favourite all time BORN TO DESTRUCT songs. Still works, unlike my own....
LEECH - another personal favourite and was on fine form tonight
DESTRUCTION CREW - Gets better each time I hear it
SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE - love the 'unaccompanied' start to this and may be its worth trying without the hi hat metronome, yes it gives Kat something to pace her delivery with, but i reckon she's good enough to give it a go.
BEER - The BORN TO DESTRUCT version reaches the parts that other covers cannot reach. REELY!
SICK SCUM & APATHY - now if our leather clad punters were in any doubt about who or what Born To Destruct and Kat in particular are about then this left them in no doubt what so ever. I know I am beginning to sound cliched and hackneyed about this song, but it sums up the band in 3 mins of pure punk perfection.
EXTRAORDINARY LIFE - and an extraordinary song, another of the very latest arrivals and gets better with each performance.
WATCHING ME - actually I was watching them and very good they were too!
SUDDEN DEATH - Definitely earning its place in the set list
BAD TOUCH - 2 covers in one night? And why not when this is given the royal BORN TO DESTRUCT treatment and is definitely better than the original, I mean, come on, where is the kazoo solo in the original ? Hmm?

So another mini road trip, to play to new people in another new town, supporting MISPELT 2.0 again, all in the name of charity folks.

It does not get much better than that. (YES IT DOES.. DONT FORGET THE AMAZING PIZZA PROVIDED BY THE APPLEBY AFTER THE SHOW)

MISPELT: 2.0

The Kazoo solo was definitely the highlight of my night
