Tuesday, August 04, 2009

For what I’m about to delve into, for the sake of argument, let’s say that if you are reading this blog you actually like the Heroine Sheiks. Ever wonder why a band you like ceases to exist? Stay with me….

A grizzly bear is a magnificent wild animal. It weighs a thousand pounds, its sense of smell is ten times better than a blood hound’s; it can outrun a horse and take down a moose. But if you cut down the forest where it lives and build houses it cannot survive. It needs a certain habitat to live, civilization kills it.

Is that bad? Inside those houses are living human beings, people raising children and becoming doctors and falling in love. No, that isn’t bad. It is what it is.

Coyotes and pumas are wild animals too. They have learned how to survive on the outskirts of civilization. Are they “better” than grizzlies? Whether your answer is “yes” or “no” doesn’t change anything for the grizzly at all. It needs what it needs.

The patches of habitat, like San Francisco or New York where the Heroine Sheiks can survive have become so isolated and widely spaced that we can no longer make a go of it. We need crowds of a certain size and type in order to feed properly. Today’s musical environment, based on internet hype, striving to be “famous”, and just generally playing ball with the press isn’t “bad”, it’s just not an environment that fulfills our basic needs. Some species simply cannot breed in captivity or live in civilization. This applies to the Cows too—even more so (I suppose that makes Tom Hazelmyer a forest ranger of sorts).

People stop me every day and say “Shannon, you gotta keep doing it”. That’s great, and they mean well. I sincerely appreciate it. However, it ultimately does me no good. For ten years the public has voted with it’s time and its pocketbook. They have skipped the shows and not bought the CDs. The press, the life blood of a band, has ignored us. Again, this isn’t good or bad, it just is.

To me, living as a person day to day, it seems that people like the idea that there is still a Cows, or a Heroine Sheiks, or a Shannon Selberg (whatever that  is) out there, somewhere, like a grizzly, still living in the wild. I appreciate that too, but again, it does me no good. The wild is gone. And if a grizzly survives purely by eating from garbage dumps or only in a few zoos, is it still a grizzly? I don’t think so. I know, because I tried—you have no idea...

Having said all this, there is something in nature called “the island effect”. That’s when a species lives on an island or other reduced habitat and “shrinks” in order to survive. The island effect produced elephants and mammoths the size of ponies! Maybe I could be a little “dwarf grizzly”? Ha ha.

So, let’s wrap this up. As far as the Heroine Sheiks go, with all of the member changes: Everyone I played with was great, and they all worked their asses off for very little reward.
I owe them a lot. Alas, life in the wild is short, brutish and nasty.

Cows? When the Cows wrote Sorry in Pig Minor, we already knew that we were doomed. Sales were off and the crowds were shrinking. Most of the songs are about being doomed. “Death in the Tall Weeds”, in particular, was meant to be our epitaph (Finished Again, lyrically, was my personal epitaph). The “we” in Death in the Tall Weeds wasn’t a couple; it was the Cows and their fans.

If all of the above sounds like a lot of bullshit to you, listen to that song—it’s all in there.

That’s it. If none of this moved ya, then fuck ya. Now that’s an epitaph.

Remember, it’s all Chow.
Love,
Shannon Scott Selberg

PS
There’s plenty of  "Journey.." still for sale, nature lovers...

On a scale of 1 to 10 on the depressing meter, this blog is about a 9.  "Sorry In Pig Minor" is one of the best albums ever written, the Heroine Sheiks were awesome (saw 'em 2x in Chicago), and Cows were fucked (also saw 'em 2x In Chicago.)  All of this sucks, but it does make me glad I saw you guys for your last trip to Chicago at the Cobra Lounge last year.  You made me shoot off a round in my shorts to "Stabbed By An Angel".

Thanx for the great memories and music.

"Say Uncle"......................................

P.S.
When I sell my first movie script, I'll be sure to add in the contract that you have to do the soundtrack, cool?

Well, that sucks balls for anyone and everyone who ever latched on to the selberg express in the past 20 some odd years.  You are a true artist my friend, and I'm sure that somewhere down the road we will meet again... I can't imagine you being down and out for long (artists have that NEED to create) but until then, I am truly saddened.  I can truly understand the reason, and respect it, but I don't have to like it.
I love you man, and all you've done for (to) my musical come-uppance, and life in general.  I bought you a beer at Slims in SF the last time that the Cows came around, and you called me a fag!  One of my fondest memories!
Anyway, until our paths cross again;  Fuckity Fuckity Fuckity fuckity FUCK!!

maybe a book somewhere down the road.......

You are tops even though you have a girls name.

shit.  it is what it is.  but this new's still hit me like finding a turd in my cereal.  aw, shit.  When I was 18 I caught a Sheiks show on halloween.  Shannon kneed me in the face six times or something.  It was thrilling.  One of the greatest shows I've ever seen.  So... Thanks Shannon, for the sheiks, for the cows, for it all.  And while habitat loss is neither bad nor good, I hope you find some kind wild preserve or something.  What was that Hunter S. Thompson line?... "Too strange to exist, too weird to die."?  I don't know.  Fuck.

Dear Shannon Scott Selberg,

You've made three girls in Chicago (well, two in chicago and one in Dallas) very sad today!

Whatever you do, if you come back to chicago I will be standing in front, like I did last time...

Dear the oh-so-charming Paul Sanders,

Your headband hangs from my rear view mirror. It brings me hope. It reminds me that I was once close to greatness. My life will not be the same without you playing in the Heroine Sheiks.

xoxo,
        Kara

Shannon Selberg,

I'm one of your young groupies from Chicago. I just want to let you know that I understand. I never wanted this to happen, but I understand. If this has made you upset and you need a place to reorganize your thoughts, consider Alabama. I'd be more than happy to indulge you in all of the comforts this southern state has to offer. I've been told that my breasts cure sadness and revitalize creativity.  It's a gift! Anyways, you're fucking awesome. If you ever feel the need to be told that you are the best, look no further than me. You're just so fucking cool!

You're looking particularly sexy today!

Why do i feel that someone that i really loved and admired has just died?

That feeling sucks! Giving up and retiring, sucks! It's negative. It's dissappointing! Has Shannon Selberg really stopped making music for good? Every new COWS/HEROIN SHEIKS record made my life better, more fun more easy. What am i suppose to do now? By the way, either band never palyed in Greece!!! I have never seen you live!
It is very difficult for me to believe all that you say about The press and the sales shrinking and all that! I mean today, with the internet, it seems to me that the best manager, the best label you can have is MYSPACE. Steve Albini thinks that, too. Many underground bands are making music, albums and have a world wide fan base because of that, WITHOUT EVEN THE NEED OF A LABEL. Also, you say all those things but you don't give a reason! WHY? YOU DO NOT EXPLAIN WHY YOUR BANDS DIDN'T HAVE THE SUCCESS THAT THEY DESERVED. Can you explain for example, why similar bands like the Jesus Lizard or the Butthole Surfers have made it big time (i am not refering only to their major label deals)? I think that your pal Mike Hard is doing pretty good, too, with his new band They Never Sleep starting to get noticed. I am starting to think that leaving New York was a big mistake! I mean this city has the strongest, biggest underground scene in the world. Another good idea might be to do (have done) other more "commercial" projects in order to have a better income!!! Something like a punk-pop band maybe, i don't know. This might sound silly! I am trying to find a solution here, Ha!!
If you stop making music, what are you going to do next? Do you have any plans?

I'm sorry you feel that way, Billy. You don't have grizzly bears in Greece, do you? Hmmm. Well, you've seen
King Kong haven't you? Think about the ending. The ending is sad to the audience, not to Kong. He went out fighting for what he loved. That's you.
King Kong ain't got shit on me, but enough is enough already.

If Shannon Selberg wants his albums to sell, first he should make them available to the public!!!! Most albums by the COWS are out of print for years!!  Also i can't find anywhere the last Heroine Sheiks album. Disappointing.
The Cows were the kind of band that didn't give a shit about anyone and anything. They had that fuck you atittude, we are doing this for ourshelves. Now, Shannon Selberg is comlaining about low record sales and small crowds at his shows. It doesn't sound right. I can understand though, that Shannon is much older now, he is not 25!
Hey Shannon, Why are you so negative about the COWS getting back together? Haven't you noticed that all the big noise-rock bands have reunited? Flipper, Butthole Surfers, Killdozer, Jesus Lizard, Six Finger Satelite. There is going to be an explosion.I believe that it's now or never for the Cows. I am absolutely positive that if the Cows would get back together seriously, with the original line-up, touring and making new albums, no one would say a bad thing about it. On the contrary, you would make many people happy. Unfortunately the Heroine Sheiks didn't work out, with all the line-up changes, all the original members leaving.....! So maybe it's time for the COWS.

Cows, Shieks, Shannon...and all the like brothers and sisters: fuck this world if it can see or appreciate the genius that YOU ARE! I saw you play with the Shieks last oct in Silvelake @ Spaceland and you were amazing! NOW...we still have the music, memories, laughs, sorrows, nightmare's and joys that the music brought and still brings us. The press and shitty, snotty hipsters may have never gotten what you set out to do....but WE HAVE! We will always remember...always have one of your cd's, albums, MP3''s just an arm length's away. The Grizzly may have a shrinking physical habitat, but the habitat of mind and spirit will be eternal for the mighty Grizzly and its brothers and sisters. You wont be gone for long though.....Grizzlys never quit!

Most importantly, this band did exist.  And it was an honor to be the drummer in it and for quite a little while.  One good thing is that the music is still out there and though only in recorded form now it is nonetheless alive and still in its original form, and will be for some time to come.  Life in the wild was very good, albeit short, brutish, and nasty.  Thanks for the time there, Shannon.  Hugs and kisses, John

I miss bands that make a dent; I miss songwriters that make me feel something.  It's tragic for anyone that feels the same way to lose what they most admire.  When there is this 'disconnected understanding' with someone it's certainly a shame in their eyes that life moves forward.  But, I digress.  Shannon man, I've looked up to your sense of being yourself despite what others may have thought or said.  We all loved your music through the years and will never forget...

I'm not going to be one of those people that say, "Cows Reunion" or any of that shit.  Just keep doing what you're doing and be real.  It was nice to at least nervously shake your hand at Forward Fest in Madison when it seemed no one else knew who you were!

Shannon, thanks for the great music and memories you have provided for the past 20+ years with Cows and Heroine Sheiks. From the first time I seen the Cows live, I have been a fan of yours ever since. The shows you guys put on were second to none. It sucks because this seems like the end of an era of great underground music. Again thanks for everything you have contributed to the music scene and you will be greatly missed. Hopefully someday you will come back with something very kick ass like I have experienced ever since I seen You play with the Cows at Club Hell in Detroit many years ago. I will be a fan of yours till the day I cease to exist on this Earth.

Well, the last time you were in portland you played at a place that i could've sworn was owned by the Russian mob on a MONDAY nite with 3 bands who were were the SHITTIEST bands i've ever seen, no kidding- i couldn't even give them a break for 'art's sake'. They stunk on ice is what i'm trying to say. and oh, Nothing resembling your band. you're older than me so i think you should know that already that bands that play together should maybe sound enough like each each other to perhaps be a part of the same universe. and such bands are here. plus for whatever kind of shit they were playing they sucked. it made me wonder if you like having shitty bands before you to make yourselves sound better but obviously that's not needed. so with all that, what could you expect? so, you know, 3 goddam hours of that mind-numbing shit before you're finally on. sheesh. Please fire your booker already and Portland will treat you the way you deserve to be treated....like a lady.

You are as eloquent on your blog posts as you are on stage and in the lyrics.   As a transplanted midwesterner (nee Milwaukkee, Minneapolis, Madison) I miss the music and vibe out there.  Cows were my absolute favorite band and Heroine Shieks were not far behind.

For what it's worth, one of my fondest memories of living in Minneapolis was the time Mr. Selberg and I "crosses lines" whilst peeing at some warehouse party in N.E.  He (you) also drank a sizable portion of my beer.  I was pleased to oblige though....  with the pee crossing and the beer.

*sigh*....   brings a tear to my eye and reminds me that I need to listen to "I miss her beer."

Things and people change, no big deal, anyone who refuses to roll with it is a fool.

I personally don't care how many were on board, and how many weren't.  For me, both bands will forever be at the top of the most potent, entertaining and rewarding things I've ever witnessed.

You did it your way, and I'm very thankful for it.

Indeed a loss, and in a great way. add me to the ranks of all these good people who are sad to not have this experience again. but -  life still keeps going for artists who decide to change their course because the drawbacks outweigh the benefits. you have to respect this decision... evolution, nature? quite so. it's the difference between humans and animals - we can make a conscious choice to hang it up when it isn't working for us anymore. and i didn't see anything about giving up music, just the Sheiks.

Re: those few comments that whine of "giving up" and ask "why": hm, it's kind that you are up in arms about "retiring" (er, your words, not his):
i suggest you put in about your full age's worth of years in the trenches, work your damn hardest and deal with shitty clubs/labels/bookers/publicists/backstabbers, and then see if you still need an explanation "why". perhaps you have an extra 15 or so grand laying around to lay out for re-releasing the Cows albums or to hire people who know what they're doing to help promote the band, that would be awfully sweet of you.

Shannon,

You did it for all the right reasons and for that you have all my respect and admiration.

I feel very fortunate to have seen the COWS and The Heroine Sheiks(one of my favorite shows of all time is the Sheiks at this shitty little bar in POMONA, CA called the Hi-Brow, the defining moment was when you took a mouth full of beer from a pitcher and soaked this chick at the table next to me that had her back to you guys...that's what you get for ignoring the band!!!). The Sheiks will always be my "Litmus Test" for whether someone gets what art and music is all about.

Thanks for the memories, insight and the music.

Captain America was injected with a "super-serum". That's how he got his powers. Maybe an old grizzly punk like Dave Yow or King Buzzo can save you Shannon. Cuz they gots that serum. Maybe you can write songs for somebody. That's what DeeDee did, even after he quit the Ramones.
I'm going to the FunFunFun Fest in Austin,Tx. in Nov. Lotso stars there...Jesus Lizard, D.R.I., Danzig etc. If you can't find work at least you'll take a little holiday. Maybe that's all the Grizzly Dwarf needs!

Sorry to hear the news. It's not too difficult to understand your reasoning. If you can't make it work than that's how it is. I do hope to see you back in the scene some day, sooner rather than later, because you are unique and hugely talented and I do believe that there needs to be a "Shannon Selberg out there." But if not,so be it. We still have all those great records to listen to.
