Since I've been getting more and more active on this myspace account, I thought this would be a great chance for me to share a little more about my songs, and the messages behind them to you all. Will anyone read this?? I guess we'll find out!!
Welcome to Utopia
I actually wrote most of the lyrics for Welcome to Utopia in my head during Philosophy class as we discussed modernism and post-modernism. I'd heard a lot about both of these "isms" before, but there was one thing that Dr. Chris Bounds said in Philosophy class that really stuck out to me. Basically, the point was that during the time of the Enlightenment all the way up until just the last few decades, people actually believed that through reason, government, capitalism, science, and technology, we could create a sort of "utopia" (or, perfect world).
When Dr. Bounds said the word Utopia, I actually laughed out loud. Look around you... does anything in this "utopia" of ours look like a perfect world? That's the basic idea behind "Welcome to Utopia". It is a sarcastic song about how naive it is to believe that, at least through reason, technology, and politics, we will ever create a perfect world.
So enjoy the song, and ahem.... welcome to utopia!
