Program Highlights - October 26-31
Edited by Geoff Chambers

Boo! Halloween closes out the week, and in the "spirit" of the ghostly season, WDIY has several related events lined up. Friday night, October 30, the program Unlimited Possibilities will air a recording of the original Orson Welles/Mercury Theater broadcast of H.G. Wells's War of the Worlds, 7 to 9 pm. On Saturday, October 31, tune in for some spooky sounds throughout the day and night, beginning with All Reet Street. Finally, on Saturday night, we'll be holding our 3rd annual One Ale of a Night. This year's benefit, entitled Il Gala Verde (The Green Gala), will be a costume ball, with reservations due October 26.

MONDAY, October 26

Lehigh Valley Art Salon, 6 to 6:30 pm: Guest host Marcie Lightwood interviews Jacqueline Atkins, chief curator for the Allentown Art Museum, about the museum's current exhibition, "A Force for Change: African American Art and The Julius Rosenwald Fund." In addition, Paul Willistein will review a current film with this week's installment of "At the Movies."

Take Charge of Your Life, 6:30 to 7 pm: Host Eleanor Bobrow talks with Edward Hallowell, M.D., author of the new book on attention deficit disorder, Superparenting for ADD: An Innovative Approach to Raising Your Distracted Child. As a pediatric psychiatric clinician, father of two ADD children, and himself an adult with ADD, Dr. Hallowell understands how the negativity from doctors, teachers and others can frustrate parents and cause them to overlook the talents and possibilities "beyond the label." Tune in to discover positive, strength-based approaches to living with and helping your child with ADD both at home and at school. Whether you are the parent, grandparent or teacher of a child with ADD, you will want to take charge of your life and tune in for this highly informative discussion.

Folk Classics, 7 to 9 pm: It's "Mini Concert" night on Folk Classics, as host Steve Aaronson plays sets from many Folk Classics favorites - including Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, The Chad Mitchell Trio, Peter, Paul & Mary, and Ramblin' Jack Elliott. Steve will also feature some singer-songwriters from the folk/pop sector of the Golden Age - including Don McLean, Jim Croce, and James Taylor.

WEDNESDAY, October 28

Your Financial Choices, 6 to 7 pm: host Laurie Siebert, CPA, CFP, interviews Tom Riddle, president of Valley National Financial Advisors, and Russell Wild of Global Portfolios to discuss "Bond Investing and Risks with Municipals." Laurie and her guests will also take your calls at (610) 758-8810 and respond to questions received online via yourfinancialchoices.com.

THURSDAY, October 29

Lehigh Valley Discourse, 6 to 7 pm: Host Marcie Lighwood interviews the Rev. Thomas Lichner, pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and a representative from Moravian Church of Bethlehem, about the issue of homelessness in the Christmas City.

Galactic Travels, 11 pm to 1 am: Bill Fox presents hour-long soundscapes of electronic, ambient, and space music. The Special Focus for September vidnaObmana, the artist name used by Dirk Serries for one chapter of his creative expression. Although Dirk has moved on to other projects, vidnaObmana's oeuvre continues to provide ambient fans with the deep listening experience few other artists can match. The Featured CD at Midnight will be vidnaObmana's The River of Appearance, originally released on the Projekt label in 1996.

FRIDAY, October 30

Unlimited Possibilities, 7 to 9 pm: In celebration of the 71st anniversary of the radio broadcast of H.G. Wells's The War of the Worlds by Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater company, host Joe Cassano is airing the original program in its entirety from 7 to 8 pm. Joe is also seeking suggestions of Halloween music for the program's second hour, (610) 694-8100. The broadcast is one of three opportunities in the Lehigh Valley to experience re-creations of this iconic 1938 broadcast. Also Friday night, the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum will present two live reenactments of the production, with shows at 7 and 8:15 pm (nominal admission fee). For details, contact museum curator Jill Youngken at 610-435-1074 or j_youngken@lchs.museum.

SATURDAY, October 31

All Reet Street, 11 am to 1 pm: Host Geoff Chambers adds some ghouls and goblins to his weekly mix of new and classic releases from the worlds of folk, blues and beyond. And be sure to stay tuned throughout the afternoon and eve, as other WDIY program hosts serve up some special musical tricks and treats in celebration of one of the few holidays of the year set aside purely for the fun of it.
