FAQ #1: How come Subimage is no longer making electropop music?

Hmmm... while I am touched there's so much interest in sub sounds, past and present, I guess things just had to change, that's all.

But here's a repost of ALOT of words which answered this more throroughly...

(I mean ALOT of words. Not for the ADHD crowd)

A Synthpop Reformation

The following 45 Theses were found nailed to the office door of Mute Records London, corporate representatives of iconic, monolithic Depeche Mode.

APRIL 24, 2005

Out of love for the music and the desire to bring it to light, the following propositions will be discussed at length under the moderation of one Subdude Chris Campbell, candidate to the Master of Arts in Sacred Synthpop.

Wherefore he requests that those who are unable to be present and debate orally with us, may do so by email (chris@subimage.net).

In the Name of Music. Amen.

1. Prior to Synthpop, Quality Music was largely impossible to produce by the Average Bloke.

2. This was due to prohibitively expensive musical instruments and recording equipment.

3. Consistently drunk guitarists.

4. And flaky drummers.

5. Thus recording, producing, and releasing music was not possible without access to $500,000 studios, thousands of dollars for record pressings, and a reliable team of people all dedicated to respective tasks.

5. Synthpop "leveled the playing field", thereby allowing Average Blokes, like Subdude, to make music in the bedroom.

6. Not "that kind of music". Sheesh.

7. But rather music which included drums, guitars, violins, flippin' bow saws whatever.

8. Music which included as many instruments and sounds as one's synthesizer allowed.

9. It was suddenly easy for the Average Bloke to produce professional-grade sound.

10. Synthpop was a salve to a generation of Average Blokes in bedrooms.

11. And such a wondrous new genre it was.

12. Overturning established definitions of pop music.

13. Robbing stadium rock of its pyrotechnics.

14. Replacing it with black lipstick and fishnet stockings.

15. Blippy beats and luscious androgony.

16. And the Euro-nerds with synthesizers briefly ruled the airwaves!

17. Thereby fathering all sorts of new things, like House and Techno and Industrial.

18. Followed by Drum n Bass and EBM and Jungle.

19. Evolution took its course.

20. Except Synthpop remained the same.

21. Average Blokes in bedrooms stayed in their bedrooms.

22. Composing the same old Synthpop. (See Exhibit A, Subimage's "ETOC")

23. While tattered Depeche Mode posters kept watch.

24. And vocalists nodded to Dave Gahan.

25. Suddenly the new glorious genre of Synthpop was neither new nor glorious.

26. It staled and smelled like head cheese.

27. Or crusty socks.

28. Then even more head cheese was produced. (See Exhibit B, Subimage's "FRUITPACIFIST")

29. And after all the hooha and debates and hair-splitting genre descriptions, it was all still just head cheese.

30. The Average Blokes in bedrooms still never had to compromise with other human beings.

31. They still didn't require nor want real drummers or guitarists.

32. And their socks got crustier.

33. Argh.

34. Wherefore finally Subdude called for change!

35. He was to leave his bedroom immediately!

36. He was to go forth and propagate with a real drummer!

37. And banish himself from the ElectroGarden of Eden!

38. Unless, of course, he sincerely loved Synthpop music.

39. Which would mean that Subdude talked a whole bunch of nonesense.

40. Which would not be suprising.

41. But, well... he did sincerely love Synthpop music.

42. Though he was also excited by the likes of new bands such as the Arcade Fire, !!! (chk chk chk), and old bands such as the Happy Mondays.

41. Which, having said that, was probably making Subdude some new Synthpop enemies.

42. Though Subdude was very appreciative of the friends made through Synthpop music.

43. And even if this Reformation applied only to Subdude.

44. He hoped to still have those friends as friends.

45. And he hoped his friends would check out his new indie rokk sounds...

(Whew. That was one leaky word hole. Thanks for reading!)

That was the funniest blog I have read in awhile.  I hope that you didn't pull a blogging muscle doing that one.
