This is such a crazy complex issue.

There are so many uninsured, so many denied coverage and so many like me, who can afford great insurance, only to have preexisting conditions within my family be excluded from coverage.

Political views and fears aside, what should our priorities be in addressing this as a church? As believers?

Government may help, but what's the role of local churches in their communities?
Our church in Houston is wrestling with this and beginning to form a plan to engage now rather than waiting on others to serve those in need.

The document below helped in at least sparking conversation and outlining priorites for me.

Thoughts? And not just thoughts on whether the bozos in the senate are gonna fix this -- more on how you and i can respond at home in our neighborhoods and cities.

Cheers,
Robbie

Dear Robbie, I read the document, I wish the authors of it ( who had the time to write a 8 page document) would take a close look at the new health care bill. It is not the answer to our ever growing health care problems. As a Christian without health care I will never support a"government run health care program"  Ask any veteran about the V.A. government run hospitals its one nightmare after another. Let me share a line from this document "As Christians we are called to participate in God's new creation as instruments of healing and redemption.By assuring that everyone has access to health care" I hope there not calling this bill gods creation. Am I misunderstanding this?
  1) Do your own research and pray. There is enoughf information out there for you to form your own opinion!
  2) Share what you find with your family and friends and pray together!!!
  3) I havent got to 3 yet. I am praying for direction!!
It does not take a majority to prevail...but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.

We need to vote more christians into office!

I've been very outspoken on this issue, especially on the political side, but we'll leave the politics out here.

I know the original idea behind insurance was a spreading of risk.  Say that there were 50 people in a church or a village and they all put a bit of money in a pot every month that could be doled out in the event that something catastrophic took place in the community.  Maybe it's a fishing community and one guy's boat sinks.  The money in the pot can be used to help defray the cost a new boat.

Obviously, how the pot is managed is up to the community.  And in small communities, each person has more of a voice in how the pot gets used, but it's a smaller pot.  In larger communities, each person has less say, but it's a bigger pot.

In a secular community, this can be done as a simple matter of mathematics.  In a church or a Christian community, the hope would be that mathematics can be supplemented with love.  Yes, we're all still fallen people and subject to the things that come along with that, but in theory, we should be better at this than "the world" is.

There IS a biblical model for this, too (Acts 2).  Just a thought.

By the way, my wife and I used to attend Ecclesia.  We moved from Houston to Guatemala (to do mission work) for two years, then returned to the US but are now in North Carolina and we miss you guys very much!  Keep up the good work!!!

Once I find a job...get a revenue stream going again; but in the meantime, I want government to address the REAL issue driving up cost - malpractice lawsuits and "ambulance chasers". Jesus woed the lawyers...for good reason.

I think we can respond by trying to educate people on the truth about nationalized health care. We need to let people know the facts on what it is and how it may hurt us. I would love to be able to have healthy discussions with people on what works and what doesn't with this huge plan. Our health care shouldn't be government run, I don't believe. When they step in it becomes disastrous!

More than anything else, we need to love and bring the lost to Christ in the way that we live our lives. We should try to tell people that whatever does happen, God, our King is still in control. I do not believe that He will ever let us take on more that we handle as a nation, or as individual Christians.

God bless your music Robbie! It is powerful! Come to NC again so my wife and I can worship with you.

grace and peace.

Let's not start by calling our leaders bozos and start praying for them to have wisdom that is not of or from this world.

The world isn't meant to be fixed it is meant to be loved and saved.

Wow, that tool kit is probably the best and most unbiased spiritual article I've read on health-care reform! It gives both pros and cons and simply states the truth. I work for a non-profit medical agency and I will tell you there are countless individuals who seem to fall through the cracks all the time.

So what can we do? Well, the bible speaks of caring for one another. And to help each other out. Does it matter if it's through our church, paying taxes, etc? I don't know. I do know that God has blessed me to be a blessing to others. So, if I have more than enough, I willingly share it with those who do not. Is that socialistic of me? I don't think so. I'm just doing out of my own free will what God has placed in my heart to do. But think about it. If churches and spiritual non-profits all around the world would collaborate we could make MAJOR changes in the medical well-being of our communities and nations.

So my advice....find the non-profit medical agencies in your community. There are countless agencies devoted to GOD and to helping the needy. Medical Clinics, prenatal clinics, etc. Most of these agencies operate soley on donations and government grants, which is never enough. Find out if you can volunteer at these agencies if you can't help financially. If we were to all lend a hand or a dollar, we could make a real difference in our communities.
